Heading the Guidance Department is Miss Hall, the counselor for students whose last names begin with the letters M through R. Mr. Massalsky assists students from A to Eg Mr. Boyle from F to Lg and Mr. Hess from S to Z. The Guidance Department not only advises students on college choices, but it also helps to provide jobs for the vocational- and business-minded students. Another guidance duty is the administration of college entrance and scholarship tests. In February the sophomores are confronted with the National Educational Development Test and the juniors take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The results from these tests influence the granting of college scholarships. College Boards and Achievement Tests are administered in December, January, March, and May. This year, the schoolis largest subject area f nineteen teachersj was headed by four chairmen, one in charge of each class: senior teachers were headed by Miss Burnite, juniors by Mr. White, sophomores by Mr. Tichon, and freshmen by Mrs. Lucey. An accomplishment of last year's Senior English was the intro- duction of an Advanced Placement English course by Miss Burnite, who was responsible for compiling the AP syllabus. This course, taught on a college basis, promotes depth in the understanding of literature and encourages independent research and reading. A student achieving a passing grade on the College Board AP English examination is eligible for advanced standing in colleges that acknowledge the results of the exam. ln January, ,lack Matthews, poet and professor from Ohio University, ap- peared before Senior English, Advanced Composition, and Speech classes. Mr. Matthews read some of his best poetry and talked about the style and purpose of poetry. This lecture, sponsored by the International Poetry Forum, gave students a good insight into how a poet thinks, much of those students, time is spent analyzing poetry and critically inspecting it. n English Requires Four N MR.
