Your outstanding performance during this deployment set the standard for New Threat Upgrade Cruisers and established FOX ' s reputation for excellence throughout the Pacific Fleet. Whether in sustained operations at sea or diplomatic missions in foreign ports, FOX was the first choice for every mission and demonstrated time and time again the can do spirit of the Worlds Finest Cruiser . Your unfailing spirit, ingenuity and resourcefulness despite extremely lengthy days at sea, voyaging through areas of known danger clearly displayed your immense courage and dedication. These are the elements which inspired all of us and made FOX the success that she is. To families and friends who browse through these pages, it will bring to life the letters written home and tales of WESTPAC. I feel privileged and honored to have been part of the FABULOUS FOX team. You ' ve earned my highest regards and deepest respect as the finest sailors I could ever ask to serve with. I thank you for your strong support and endearing loyalty. WELL DONE, MEN! A ' T ; D.L. PECK Captain, United States Navy Commanding Officer SHIPS HISTORY USS FOX (CG-33) a Josephus Daniels class guided missile cruiser, was launched on November 21, 1964 at Todd Shipyard in San Pedro, California. The ship was commissioned at Long Beach Naval Shipyard on May 28, 1966 and is assigned to the U.S. Pa- cific Fleet. FOX is the third naval vessel to be named after Gustavus Vasa FOX, President Lincoln ' s Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. Through Secretary FOX ' s encouragement, the Navy was committed to the use of Ironsides, and he was re- sponsible for having naval engineering added to the curriculum at the U.S. Naval Academy. The first vessel to be named after Sec- retary FOX was Torpedo Boat 13, commissioned in July 1899. It served as an experimental vessel until decommissioned in 1916. The second vessel to be named after the Secretary was the de- stroyer FOX (DD-234), commissioned in May 1920. It served the Navy faithfully for 25 years from Constantinople to Dutch Har- bor. Armament includes anti-submarine (ASROC) and anti-air Standard SM-2ER guided missiles. The dual-purpose launcher increased the effectiveness of the ASROC missile by providing stowage capability and a protected magazine. The missile systems aboard FOX can automatically locate, track and engage enemy aircraft at extremely long distances. With the help of computer techniques they can destroy the enemy before he can get within range of a carrier task force that FOX is designed to protect. The ship is further equipped with two quadruple-cannister HARPOON surface-to-surface missile launchers, a 5-inch, 54 caliber gun, two MK32 torpedo tubes and Vulcan Phalanx Close in Weapons System. Detection equipment includes the AN SQS-26BX Sonar, the AN SPS-48 radar, a three dimension height-finding air search, computer-controlled radar, and OUT- BOARD, a sophisticated electronic warfare system. She is also equipped with the New Threat Upgrade Combat Direction sys- tem with high speed computer processing and dissemination of tactical information. FOX has received the following awards: Meritorious Unit Commendation (with one bronze star). Battle Efficiency E Ribbon (with three E devices). Navy Expeditionary Medal (with one bronze star), the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with two bronze stars). Humanitarian Service Medal (with one bronze star). Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with one silver and two bronze stars), and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. USS FOX was the recipient of the FY87 Majorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award as the most battle ready ship in the Pa- cific Fleet.
