Bahrain is an independent emirate comprising a group of low-lying islands located in the Persian Gulf between the Saudi Arabian mainland and the Qatar peninsula. The archipelago's major island, Bahrain, is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. About 40 CVO of the country's population lives in Manama, the capital city. The name Bahrain is derived from the Arabic for two seas. Bahrain's importance as an oil-producer is waning, but it continues to be a commercial center because of its strategic location. The two most important islands are Bahrain and al-lvluharraq, which are connected by causeway, other islands include Sitra, Umm Nassan, An Nabi Salih, Jidda, and the Hawar group. All the islands are small and low-lying. The central region of the main island, however, is a barren limestone plateau that rises to a maximum elevation of 445 ft. The climate is hot and rainfall is sparse. Summer temperatures average 93OF, with daytime temperatures in excess ot 1060Fg winter temperatures average about 63OF. Belative humidity is 70M to 80 'Ml for most of the year, but annual rainfall averages only about 3 inches. l l l i A
