SUBIC BAY R P The Philippines is an inde- pendent island nation in the Western Pacific some 500 miles off the coast of mainland Southeast Asia. Over centur- ies, foreign elements have been added to the indigenous Malay culture, creating a cul- tural mosaic that reflects both Eastern and Western influ- ences. Visited by traders from various parts of Asia long be- fore being colonized by Spain in 1565, the islands were ceded to the United States in 1898 and gained indepen- dence in 1946. For much of its postindependence history, the country was led by Ferdinand E. Marcos, who was elected president in 1965, ruled under martial law from 1972 to 1981, and retained sweeping powers after martial law was lifted. The Marcos era came to a dra- matic end in 1986, when an outpouring of popular protest forced Marcos into exile and Corazon C. Aquino assumed the presidency. The Philippines has a tropi- cal climate, with a mean annu- al lowland temperature of about 800F. Temperatures vary more between day and night and high and low alti- tudes than between seasons. About 90'M, of the country re- ceives more than 70 inches of rainfall a year. Rainfall is hea- viest between October and April in the east and between June and November in the west, and windward area areas are wetter than leeward ones. Typhoons are common.
