Battle Group ' ' E ' ' During the deployment FOX operated with Battle Group E . comprised of USS RANGER CV-61 with Carrier Air Wing 2 embarked, FOX, USS ENGLAND CG-22. USS PAUL F. FOSTER DD-964. USS OUELLET FF-1077. USS BREWTON FF-1086, USS WHIPPLE FF-1062, and USS RATHBURNE FF-1057. all under command of RADM Arthur S. Moreau. For most of the deployment FOX acted as anti-air warfare commander for the battle group, responsible for all aspects of its air defense.

USS FOX FOX is the third Navy ship to bear the name of President Lincoln ' s Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Gustavus Vasa Fox. Secretary Fox was an early proponent of iron-clad warships and significantly improved the Union Navy during the Civil War. The first USS FOX was Torpedo Boat 13. an experimental vessel in service from 1899 to 1916. In 1920 the second FOX, DD-234, was commissioned. She served around the world through the end of the second World War, from Constantinople to Dutch Harbor. Today ' s FOX has served with the Pacific Fleet since her commissioning in 1966. She is 547 feet long, 55 feet wide, displaces 7900 tons, and Is crewed by 450 men. Her formidable armament Includes anti-air guided missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, a five-inch gun, and torpedoes. Sophisticated radars, electronic warfare systems, and a computerized tactical data system back up her weapons suite.

CAPT Donald R. Anderson Commanding Officer FOX ' s tenth commanding officer, making his and FOX ' S tenth Western Pacific deployment, is CAPT Donald R. Anderson. CAPT Anderson grew up in Philadelphia and received his commission through the Villanova University NROTC program in 1959. Since then his assignments have included sea tours (USS TULARE AKA-I 13, USS MORTON DD-948, USS ROWAN DD-782), graduate education (Defense Intelligence School, George Washington University, Naval War College, National War College), and staff duty in Saigon and Washington. FOX is CAPT Anderson ' s fourth command, after USS MARYSVILLE EPCER-857, USS KING DLG-IO. and USS WADDELL DDG-24. He relieved as FOX ' s commanding officer on 3 April 1982, just four days before FOX left San Diego for WestPac ' 81
