USS FOX FOX is the third Navy ship to bear the name of President Lincoln ' s Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Gustavus Vasa Fox. Secretary Fox was an early proponent of iron-clad warships and significantly improved the Union Navy during the Civil War. The first USS FOX was Torpedo Boat 13. an experimental vessel in service from 1899 to 1916. In 1920 the second FOX, DD-234, was commissioned. She served around the world through the end of the second World War, from Constantinople to Dutch Harbor. Today ' s FOX has served with the Pacific Fleet since her commissioning in 1966. She is 547 feet long, 55 feet wide, displaces 7900 tons, and Is crewed by 450 men. Her formidable armament Includes anti-air guided missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, a five-inch gun, and torpedoes. Sophisticated radars, electronic warfare systems, and a computerized tactical data system back up her weapons suite.
