QM ' ' ' FOXTALES ' 8 This is the story of a journey half-way around the world and back, as seen through the eye of the camera. Six and one-half months and over 40.000 miles are compressed into these pages, faces and places captured on film and preserved as memories for the future. Pictures tell the story far more eloquently than words, so read here in the photographs the story of USS FOX. her crew, and her Western Pacific Indian Ocean deployment of 1982. ■ ■ — -    Pl-- E=--r- USS FOX FOX is the third Navy ship to bear the name of President Lincoln ' s Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Gustavus Vasa Fox. Secretary Fox was an early proponent of iron-clad warships and significantly improved the Union Navy during the Civil War. The first USS FOX was Torpedo Boat 13. an experimental vessel in service from 1899 to 1916. In 1920 the second FOX, DD-234, was commissioned. She served around the world through the end of the second World War, from Constantinople to Dutch Harbor. Today ' s FOX has served with the Pacific Fleet since her commissioning in 1966. She is 547 feet long, 55 feet wide, displaces 7900 tons, and Is crewed by 450 men. Her formidable armament Includes anti-air guided missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, a five-inch gun, and torpedoes. Sophisticated radars, electronic warfare systems, and a computerized tactical data system back up her weapons suite. Battle Group ' ' E ' ' During the deployment FOX operated with Battle Group E . comprised of USS RANGER CV-61 with Carrier Air Wing 2 embarked, FOX, USS ENGLAND CG-22. USS PAUL F. FOSTER DD-964. USS OUELLET FF-1077. USS BREWTON FF-1086, USS WHIPPLE FF-1062, and USS RATHBURNE FF-1057. all under command of RADM Arthur S. Moreau. For most of the deployment FOX acted as anti-air warfare commander for the battle group, responsible for all aspects of its air defense. CAPT Donald R. Anderson Commanding Officer FOX ' s tenth commanding officer, making his and FOX ' S tenth Western Pacific deployment, is CAPT Donald R. Anderson. CAPT Anderson grew up in Philadelphia and received his commission through the Villanova University NROTC program in 1959. Since then his assignments have included sea tours (USS TULARE AKA-I 13, USS MORTON DD-948, USS ROWAN DD-782), graduate education (Defense Intelligence School, George Washington University, Naval War College, National War College), and staff duty in Saigon and Washington. FOX is CAPT Anderson ' s fourth command, after USS MARYSVILLE EPCER-857, USS KING DLG-IO. and USS WADDELL DDG-24. He relieved as FOX ' s commanding officer on 3 April 1982, just four days before FOX left San Diego for WestPac ' 81 CDR Paul W. Bixler Executive Officer A native of Pandora, Ohio, CDR Bixler attended the Naval Academy and was commissioned in 1966. His sea experience ranges from destroyers (USS ROWAN DD-782, USS WALDRON DD-699. USS JONAS INGRAM DD-938) to cruisers (USS NEWPORT NEWS CA-148) to the newest amphibious assault ships (commissioning crew, USS NASSAU LHA-4). In between sea tours he obtained his master ' s degree at the Naval Postgraduate School and taught at the Naval Academy. CDR Bixler reported aboard FOX in December 1981. FTCM Richard L. Craig Command Master Chief Now serving his second FOX tour, FTCM Craig probably knows FOX better than any other crewman. He came into the Navy in 1964, and before joining FOX the first time in 1975 he served aboard USS COONTZ DLG-9 (now DDG-40) and USS GRIDLEY DLG-21 (now CG-21). Between ship assignments he saw duty at the Naval Guided Missile School and the Naval Ship Weapon Systems Engineering Station, Port Hueneme. FTCM Craig reported aboard for his second FOX assignment in December 1981. 7 April mi ? 1 n Boxing 13 Smokers ■H 16 ' Sti c While crossing the South China Sea FOX rescued 53 Vietnamese refugees found adrift in a leal y 35-foot boat with almost no food. They had been at sea five days since fleeing Vietnam. Sponsored by the First Class Mess, they were medically examined, fed, given clothes donated by the crew, and sheltered on the flight deck. Two days later FOX embarked 81 more refugees who had been rescued by USS BREWTON. The Vietnamese were all disem- barked in Singapore, the first stop on a journey many of them hoped would eventually reunite them with families and friends in the United States. PORT Pearl Harbor The highlight of FOX ' s visit to Hawaii for three crewmen was their early-morning reenlist- ment by Commander, Third Fleet aboard the ARIZONA MEMORIAL in Pearl Harbor.
