PRAIRIE GOLD IHGH SCHOCL ORCHHHRA Fowler lligh School did not have an orchestra live years ago, but today we have one of the best in this part ot the state. The orchestra was started in l923 by Miss tilenora Morris, non' Mrs. V. ll. Hunter. Mrs. l-lunter secured Mr. C. O. Tlionipson of Lafayette to teach the wind instruments and in a very short time the group rehearsed together and the orchestra was formed. lin October, l927, l.ela Pratt, Yivian Pape, Jeanette Comlcy and Doris tiunnels were able to take part in the All-State Orchestra at Indianapolis. due to the ability of the students and the capability of Mrs. Hunter. PRAIRIE GOLD Latin Team ' The Benton County Latin Contest was held at Fowler, February 4. Those repre- senting Fowler were: Latin I.. Carrie Anne Bechley and Catherine Price: Latin II., Vivian Pape and Mary Leadbetterg Latin IVa., Jeanette Comley and Bessie Williams, and Latin IV.. Martha Swope. The results of this contest gave Fowler High School three contestants for the Dis- trict Contest at Rensselaer, March 3,-Latin I.. Carrie Anne Bechley, first: Latin IVa., Bessie Williams, first, and Latin IV., Martha Swope, first. , In the District Contest, Carrie Anne was awarded second place in Latin I, re- ceiving at grade of 99Kz, but upon re-examination of the papers it was found that her manuscript tied for first place with a contestant from Whiting. This entitled her to take the state test at Bloomington, Indiana. where she did very well, even though she had to go unprepared, being notified only the day before. Miss Sewell's interest and help brought results in Latin this year, which have been greatly appreciated, Yea-Betty! Commercial Team On Saturday, April 21, the Commercial Team entered the contest at Lafayette. The Novice B. Team in Typing consisted of Myrtle-Alice Ellsworth, Martha Sampson and Sara Pfleeger: the Amateur A Team of Myrl Hinckley. Violet Logan, and Clar- ence Hagenbuchg the Shorthand Team of Margaret Sheetz, Myrl Hinckley and Violet Logan. These teams worked hard under Mrs. Eberhardt's supervision and the result of this was shown when the Novice B Team won with a team average of 47.1 and indi- vidual honor of second and third place for Myrtle-Alice and Martha, respectively, which entitled the team to enter the State Contest at Muncie, Saturday, April 28. Here the team again competed with some of the largest schools in the state and although they won no place, F. H. S. was very proud of them. The Amateur A team won fourth place at Lafayette as did the Shorthand Team, which means that the Commercial work of F. H. S. is being built up and that if such good work is continued, Fowler will be proud of this department. Local Literary In the local Literary Contest held on Tuesday. April 24, 1928, Jim Dumas won the orations. giving Spartacus To the Gladiators. while Lorene Chenoweth won in decla- mation by declaiming Angel's Wickednessf' Donald Griffin and Minnie Nunn were given second places, respectively. In the County Literary Contest on Friday, May 4, 1928. we didn't do so well but we played the game fair and square, winning the public's favor. which is a great deal. Thus ends Fowler High's greatest literary year, 1928. We are proud of our record, our winning teams, and the contestants. Public Speaking and Literary F. H. S. has had a big time of it this Spring as far as Literary work and Public Speaking are concerned. In the Local Newspaper Constitution Contest on March 22, Fowler won first. when Josephine Hall came out on top over her schoolmates, with Margaret Sheetz running a close second. It was announced that Sara Pfleeger had won the Local Newspaper Essay Contest on Who is a Good Citizen and that Thelma Cook placed second. The same evening Donald Griffin won the County High School Discussion League Contest, on How to -Solve the Farm Problem, for the first time in ten years from our old rival, Oxford. On Wednesday, March 28 who should win the County Newspaper Constitution Contest but our own little Josephine, but that isn't all: Sara just blushed a little when asked to read her winning Essay of the County. Friday night, April 13, Donald journeyed to Lafayette to compete in the District High School Discussion League Contest and as it was a return trip, he brought back third place so we wouldn't feel too much hurt. The next day, Saturday, April 14. Josephine went to Rensselaer to compete in the District Newspaper Contests, where she received third. Sara's essay was sent to Hammond for the district contest and again came forth a winner and entered the final of the state. Sara went to Crawfordsville on Tuesday, April 24. and when she returned lo and behold, she had received sixth place in the State Newspaper Essay Contest. l 9 2 8 Page sixty-fire
