We're A Class You Can't Control We're The Class Of: - THE PURPLE PRIDE STAFF PROUDLY PRESENTS: rHIS ONE'S FOR FOUNTAIN LAKE SCHOOL ROUTE 7, BOX 220 HOT SPRINGS, AR 71901 VOLUME 47 This year the Annual Staff decided to adopt a name for the yearbook to continue on throughout the years. A lot of time was spent trying to come up with an appropriate name that everyone liked. After hours of brainstorming we came up with PURPLE PRIDE . Purple Pride means a lot, in different ways, to everyone here at Fountain Lake. Although it is hard to put in words it is generally a pride felt deep inside that makes people proud to be a COBRA. This pride is something that gives us the momentum to give it our all whether it be in sports or academics. It pulls the students, administration, faculty and community into one big family that supports one another 100% all the way. So now we, ■ the Purple Pride Annual Staff present - THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!! Purple Pride is something that is hard to define. It's not an object, something that you can describe, but a feeling. You have to earn it and it lakes a lot of time, determination and hard work. When it comes to Purple Pride, you either have it or you don't. RON JAMES Purple Pride is something you get when you're ready to support your team whether you are winning or losing, whether it's football, basketball, tennis, track etc. ... EARNEST TAYLOR ■ I ri Vf; ' PURPLE PRIDE AND YOU 2 DEDICATION DEDICATION DEDICATION PEP Once upon a time , there lived an is a very kind and considerate man This man is an intelligent Because of all of your hard work and dedica-extraordinary man. This man who has lived and gifted person who likes to work with kids. This is a man tion we would like to dedicate this yearbook to in Hot Springs for three years now, never who is greatly dedicated to his work and does all in his ability you, Mr. Beckham, seemed to be at home. He always appeared to help others. This man is Mr. Larry Beckham, to spend more time at a place called Fountain Mr. Beckham, who started out three years ago as the Lake School than anywhere else. Who is this girls basketball coach, quickly became a principal. He has mystery man? Well, the answer is simple. This been a positive and dynamic addition to our school. MR. BECKHAM THIS ONE'S FOR YOU 3 ■■ Well before the school year started, many activities were already underway. The fun had started. From games to dances to classes to assemblies, the year had its ups and downs. If any one word could describe the year it would be ALIVE. The students lives were constantly moving at a fast pace. To all you lively students, we say This One's For You. MORE I WORK | 1 These boys have come to our aid as FIRE MARSHALLS. Michele Merwine, is this a fair trial?? We haven't forgotten about our maintenance Look at Mr. Beckham, Alicia!! man. Shelly Rodgers decided to attend journalism today!! “ I Mr. Hancock finally decides to work. Don't just stand there Coach Utley, get working!!! Aren't you cheating Bill? 1 Has anyone seen Luke Dickson? Coach Clay are you sure you know what you're doing? I AND LESS PLAY Ah yes, those lovely blistering humid days of degree weather with sweat pouring down your forehj to the tip of your nose before finally dripping off into seemed to be a lake forming beneath. Everyone counts the final days of an endi year until summer begins, but when it gets here'one lo to madly rip his clothes off and head for the near puddle or pool, just about anything to ke The real question is, what does one do during the long, hot summer months? ljl great things for everyone to do. Most of us look forward to spa swimming and or just lying on d Summer is not just a time j Kfai on the beach; it is also time to e? so you won't have to listen to paren It can also be rewarding. No telling meet or just how much fun you might have one ever forgets those long, wonderful summer 7 fun It's a beautiful day to be out on the lake and to be having such fun like this skier. Just a few of Ftn. Lake's Kids are taking advantage of the beautiful day by taking a hike. Is Pam Watson sitting in the sun or is she just posing for the camera? All play and no work makes us wonder if David Sutter is still very much “young at heart . Alicia Knowlen is going fishing or not. 9 Under the Influence. What does it mean? Some thought of alcoholic beverages and the parties they attended. Others thought about that special person they scheduled their second semester classes around. Some thought of that special moment when someone gave them the chance to prove themselves, from getting a part in the Drama play to making the football team. Others remembered their friends and the crazy stunts they pulled. Sophomores were influenced by the change of going from Jr. High to Sr. High. Juniors were under the influence of dating and having fun. And the Seniors were under the influence of a non-stop fun year, especially at senior get-togethers since it was the last time a lot of them would ever see each other. At 2:00 p.m., everyone joined hands and sang three songs; Hanas Across America, We are the World, and the national anthem. Mrs. Thompson and the choir chartered a bus and 58 students traveled to Malvern to take part in the line. A good time was by all, but the main goal was to help America's hungry and homeless. Our last year of high school is finally here, and a few aren't sure if they're ready to leave or not. While a few have their future plans determined, all are trying to face reality. That reality finally hit us when our graduation announcements, caps and gowns, and memory books arrived. Fountain Lake has seen us through the best and the worst of times. After everything that most of us have been through the past twelve years, the Seniors of 86 are living proof that MIRACLES DO HAPPEN! I was running through the spirit line and fell flat on my face; then I got run over by the entire team. MIKE ROMANO A large part of our school years was devoted to social crowth and development. Our personalities were developed and some plans had been made for the future but no one was really sure of anything. Our anger, our love, our respect, and our sensitivity had all been snared with those around us throughout the years. The end of our high school years will be the beginning of our college years the beginning of our family years - new paths that we will follow. Everyone will be going separate ways, attempting new goals, seeking new friends. Our lives as students will be reflected in the choices we make, in what we do with our lives beyond school. THE END IS JUST My most memorable moment is when Pam, Kim, judy and Alicia put chili powder in Kristi, Tammy, Laura G. and my cinnamon can down in Home Ec. Our cinnamon rolls turned into CHILI ROLLS! JUNIORS ; NEXT ONE'S FOR US As a junior, many different thoughts about high school enter your mind. You are relieved to have just one more year and to have made it this far, yet a nervous feeling comes over you as you realize that the year you've anticipated is so near. When asked what they look forward to most for their senior year many juniors could not pinpoint a single idea. Graduation, of course, was on everyone's mind, but close behind were football season, prom, and senior privileges. They all seem to agree that having fun will be top priority. Working together in preparing for “Prom '86 , juniors learned a lot from each other. The best of which was realizing that that's what friends'' are for. The first few weeks were aggravating to the newcomers. The upper class-men continued to teach sophomores the valuable lessons they needed to learn in order to belong. When asked how being the youngest really affected them, Shari Wyatt replied, It feels alright because the older kids take care of you. Another sophomore said, I'm not worried about it. Some of us sophomores are more mature than the seniors (I wouldn't even mention the juniors). Another new trick learned by the sophomores was the way to get themselves out of hot water . Making excuses is America's way out of trouble. We've all done it at one time or another. Like in those devastating situtations when one's very life is on the line. We've collected a few real classic excuses which some imaginative people have known to use. It was Jon's fault! Angy Richardson. I was giving private lessons to my girl last night. Scott Reese. On a rainy, foggy day in October, seventy F. L. students loaded up on a bus and headed out to Gulpha Gorge Park. Ranging from bashful to wittiest, our student body was represented in full force. Some ventured to the top of the mountain while others patiently and cooperatively waited on the benches. Others stood in the middle of the creek while some climbed up on the rooftops. After things settled down, Mr. Hancock bravely got the Seniors back on the bus only to find that they all became rowdy once more. Later, at McDonald's, Kristi Graves spilled “Sprite all over herself and a poor old man sitting innocently beside her. Finally it was decided to head back to school. This years theme was Arkansas and Liberty - A Year of Celebration. This year Fountain Lake had a special guest. It was Christi Taunton, Miss Arkansas 1985, who provided entertainment throughout the evening and also crowned our newly chosen Miss Fountain Lake. Also appearing throughout the pageant were members of the Fountain Lake Senior Ensemble, and Mary Thompson presented an original sesquicentennial song. Although it seemed as though pageant night would never get here, it did. With it came memories that would be made and friendships renewed. The moment everyone waited for arrived and with it our new Miss Fountain Lake. For the first time ever a sophomore, Ms. Angy Richardson was crowned to represent Fountain Lake with a year of Pride. They set their goal and did everything in their power to accomplish it. In October they started selling yearbooks. They came up with every sales pitch in the world. In between selling ads and yearbooks, they began putting the yearbook together. Hours were spent drawing and redrawing layouts. They had to create copy and captions which would fit and still manage to say what they wanted the picture to say. Words such as pica, bleed and crop quickly became part of their vocabulary and they would write copy in their sleep. Everyone on staff quickly found things they enjoyed doing. Darrell and Robbie enjoyed getting out of school for a week and selling ads. Charlotte and Judy liked laying out the pages. Michelle, Shelly Johnson, and Tina just liked working with their friends. Alicia and Shelly Rodgers liked getting a sneak preview of all the pictures. Kristi Craves, the editor, liked meeting deadlines, while Laurie and Trina thought the after deadline parties were the best. Laura Kaatz liked just the thought of getting involved. The staff has put in a lot of overtime, but when their book comes back, they always have a smile and a rewarding look on their face. Below: Kristi Graves, editor-in-chief. SADD is a national organization that was begun in 1981, in Massachusetts by a concerned teacher. The SADD Contract For Life was devised at that time. It is a contract between parent and teenager by which mutual help is promised in difficult social situations. It helps parents and teenagers communicate about drinking and driving problems. SADD has four goals: 1. To help eliminate the drunk driver and save lives. 2. To alert high school students to the dangers of drinking and driving. 3. To conduct community alcohol awareness programs. 4. To organize peer counseling programs to help students who may have concerns about alcohol. Fountain Lake's SADD group has sponsored several activities this year. First was a poster campaign and weekly announcements to heighten awareness of the drunk driving problem. Next, Paul Curtis of the Arkansas State Highway Patrol came and showed the film, None For The Road which explains the Arkansas driving while intoxicated law. Officer Curtis also brought graphic photographs of drunk driving accidents in Garland County. The Contract for Life and other literature was distributed at that time. SADD also entered the Hot Springs Christmas parade to remind people not to drink and drive over the holidays. Pennie and Brenda, two recovering alcoholics shared their stories of agony and recovery with all students in the Jr. and Sr. high. Their honesty was greatly appreciated. Finally, SADD sponsored various year-end activities to remind seniors to have a safe and sober graduation. Pennie and Brenda share their pain and hope. Every player asked had a different game. Charles Moline couldn't decide between Bauxite or Jessieville. In the Bauxite game he scored 2 touchdowns. He also had a great game against Jessieville with 6 receptions and an interception which he ran 39 yards for a touchdown. Tim Grisham's exciting game was Cutter -because it was pouring down rain and the players could hardly We played up to our potential as a team. Ron James had said that the team had made their goals and worked hard through the off season to make their goals victories. Leon Cogburn summed the question and season up very well, We were 9-1-1 and I guess that explains it. The third question was, If you had a chance to play a game over, which one would it be? Obviously the majority said the Mtn. Pine Playoff. Jon Bryant strongly feels that if they were to play Mtn. Pine again, they would win. There were mistakes made that shouldn't have been made. Over all the players feel they were well coached. The 1985-86 Cobras had an excellent year. The new coach, Sammie Lambert, came to the players during the summer and showed the ? players a promising future. We asked several players a couple of questions to get their opinion of the year. Ronnie Nobles' answer to one of the questions was, We had a good team, but things just didn't fall our way. Garrick Hogue answered the question about having a new coach this way, It was scary at first, but as the season went on, things got better. To the question about the most memorable game of the season, Tim Childress answered with this, My most memorable game was against Jessieville. We were at home and I made a basket for the other team, but it didn't really matter because we were behind by twenty points! David Beyer said, We had a good coach and good players, but we just couldn't get the good ol' wins. All the players agreed that even though the record didn't show it, they were a good team and were ready to bring basketball back to Fountain Lake. They are all looking forward to the next season, to bring Coach Lambert more than eight wins. Good luck Cobra Basketball team. It's on the line for the Cobras as Steve lets go of a one on one. From: Mrs. Hines, I believe this was the best year our volleyball team has had in a long time. They learned to play together and come back in situations which would have usually ended up as a defeat. We finished third in the conference and came in third in the district tournament. We were also the only class A team in our district. This is only the second time in Fountain Lake's history to have two girls selected all-district. It was a very fun and enjoyable year. I'm glad I was able to be involved in it. They finished 11-1 for the season defeating Hot Springs (2), Perryville, Lakeside, Lake Hamilton (2), Arkedelphia (2), Jessiville (2), and Benton; losing once to Lakeside. Five of the seven girls will be graduating this year. We are really going to miss their championships, plaques, trophies, and especially their competitive attitudes. Next year we wish the seniors luck in college and look forward to seeing great things out of the remaining players. I thought the year went real well and I'm sure I will miss it next year , said Alicia. Pam added I'm glad we did so well since it was our last year . No matter if it's Monday or Friday, 8:00 a.m. or 8:00 p.m. she's always ready to go. Whenever you walk onto the court she's there ready to coach, teach, encourage, brag a little, but most of all she's always believing in us. Mrs. Hines has a special kind of personality-that shines through even on rainy days. We appreciate all the work and dedication you have shown toward us. You will always be very special to us. Steve, Judy, Pam, Alicia, Kim, and Lori. SR GIRLS TRACK As athletics and physical fitness become more important in our society, the demands placed upon the athletes must increase to meet the demands of the sports world. After weighing the pros and cons of being a trackster, six young ladies decide to overlook the sweat, pain and agony of defeat. They wanted a chance for the thrill of victory. Coach Jerry Clay wanted only the best for his team so his practices were not exactly fun or relaxing, but the 1986 senior girls track team gave a strong showing on both the track and field. It proved well worth the work when the 1600m relay team consisting of Laura Garner, Jopie de Keijzer, Judy Freeman, and Jeannie Rigsby excelled to victory as district champs and Lion Relay Champs. Individually, Purple Pride was shining also as senior Carole Miller won the district championship in the discus event. Setting three district records, Laura Garner won the 800m run, 1600m run and the 3200m run. Laura was also part of the district relay, Lion Relay, and Panther Relay championship teams. In addition, Laura placed 4th in the 3200m run at the State Meet. Despite scheduling conflicts, bad weather and stiff competition, the 1986 senior girls track team fared well. To the senior members, we thank you for your years of dedication. You'll be missed. To those who will be returning - GOOD LUCK next year! mmm From left: Dana Dantzler, Laura Garner, Jeannie Rigsby. THE THRILL OF VICTORY 137 SR BOYS A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY Coach John Utley certainly proved that a little goes a long way as he coached the 1986 Senior boys track team through a successful season. Despite the size of the team, only five members, hard work and dedication proved to be the right combination for success. As the season progressed, so did the determination of each athlete. Individually, the district results showed the pride and power of the team. Senior Charles Moline who has attended FL for nine years and has been active in football for six years, placed fourth in the 400m run. Leon Cogburn, also a senior, has been an active member of the football team and has been a favorite in Mr. C's American History class for several years now. Leon placed 5th in the 1600m run. Part of the FL family since kindergarten, Troy Garner, who is also active in football, placed 5th in the shot put and 6th in the 100m run. Sophomore Darrick Hogue, member of the Cobra football and basketball teams, placed 4th in the pole vault. Darren Dauber, also a sophomore, placed 6th in the 400m run. When this year began I knew we had some girls returning from last year that would do very well individually. However, I didn't think we would have enough depth to compete for championships as a team. As the year began that seemed to be the case; but by the time the district meet came around, some of our new girls were improving rapidly. Going into the district meet we felt like we had an outstanding chance to win but after a poor showing in the field events I thought we were out of it. We did well in the early running events and just before the 1600m run, we were still 26 points behind. Then we really got going! We out scored Bauxite 22 to 2 in that race and pulled to within four points of the lead, and with only the mile relay left we were still 3 points behind. This was a race we had to win and we did in record time, giving us the 1986 Championship. Way to go Junior Lady Cobras! As one begins with a moving crawl, So one learns to hit the ball. One time you receive, the next you give The ball is like a day you live, Some pass you by as sand thru a sieve. So you have to keep your eye on the ball. If you ever expect to win at all. The net, one could say, is a challenge to us To get over and win, or end in a bust. And the lines whose width seems so very thin, Are to guide us to judge if the ball's out or in, As in life one soon learns if the other is fair. He will never be needed, the man in the chair. Stop now and then as you're holding the ball. To give thanks to God who created it all. And always remember when you go out to play, That if you don't win, there's another day Strat Donnell 1986 Junior Boys - Kneeling -Chris Rosenthal, Shawn Mar-lor, Brian Kisida, Standing -Franky Sears, Vaughn Garner, Mark Jognson, and Coach Hines. We finished the year with a 7-7 record; however, in all but one game we felt like we should have won. Coaching this group has been one of the highlights of my coaching career. Obviously the fifth grade is a very outspoken class. 170 Jennifer Allen Terri Adams Jennifer Ault Tim Beckham Rodney Blocker Sky Book Berry Brown James Brown Daniel Cogburn Chris Coleman April Crane Jeffery Crumpton Sean Culpepper Gina DeArmon Tracy Downen Chris Ellison Cory Bellany, not pictured Terry Owens, not pictured Jeremy Wendland, not pictured Mandy Fason Holly Ford Tammie Ford Timmy Fowlen Frankie Fowlks Jerod Freeman Tyler Fryar David Gilmore Missy Haley Teresa Harris Robert Helms Jodi Hislis Amy Huckaby John Hudnall Bobby Hulsey Leanna Ivey Rusty Kling Melany Kolash Penny Roller Donnie Lambrix Erin Larkin Amanda Loy Stephen Marlar Sandra McAtee Pam McWilliams Mike Miles Jason Nobles Tina Noles Nicole Rice Heath Rolstan Mandy Ross Bobby Scroggins Kim Sisney Terra Skinner Danny Sonjer Earnest Stevens Dallas Tillery Michael Tillery Tina Trusty Angie Turner Joe Turner Claudia Ugartechea Sarah Walters Ashley Williams Marty Williams Melissa Wilson Melanie Winiecki Jonathan Wright 171 : FOURTH GRADE The fourth graders seem to think that recess, lunch, friends, and science are the best parts of fourth grade. Some of the students were asked, What is Halley's Comet? These were their answers: Eric Balster said, It has a long tail with rocks and stuff on it. Comet - one of Santa's reindeer?'', was Jason East's reply. Emily Beckwith told us it was a comet found by Mr. Halley. Krissy Partain seemed to know what she was talking about, Halley's Comet was found in 1682 by Edmund Halley and comes around every 77 years. It will be around in 1986 I think. Other students were asked, If you could change one thing about fourth grade, what would it be? Jenny Powell would like to get paid for her work. Praying at school is what David Van Drusen would like to change. NO MORE TEACHERS! , screamed Jon Truelove. I would change the playground to a football field , exclaimed Allen Black. Each child is unique and works at his own level. The Big Event of the year is participating in the area X Special Olympics at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. The students begin training in February for the April event. The students in the self-contained classroom work hard to participate in this event. The Special Olympics oath is: “Let me win, but if I can not win, let me be brave in the attempt. 1. Getting our picture made again! 2. Enjoying the aquarium. 3. Learning together is fun. 4. When we asked them if their schoolwork was more important than the playground, they said that schoolwork was more important than the playground. If they could have been anyone besides theirselve, they wanted to be like one of their friends, except a few like Richard McCoin, he said he wanted to be Hulk Hogan, a wrestling star. There was other boys who said they would like to be like Junk Yard, Missing Link, and other wrestling stars. Angie Barker wanted to be like Cynde Lauper. A little survey was done on the second graders to find out what they liked most. We ended up with a range of answers from basketball to kickball, math to spelling, and lunch to recess. They were asked what was special about their boy girlfriend. Most of them said that their boy girlfriend was nice, good looking, and liked to play games. Overall, our second graders have learned a lot, still have a long way to go. Some advice to the second Miss Lucero's class looks busy with classwork, but Dawn Travis takes time out for a picture. graders — stay in school, study hard, and learn a lot. They are eager to learn anything that is put in front of them, and are a very bright and lively group of children. These kids have been studying about the once-in-a-lifetime Halley's Comet. These students have shown a great deal of interest in the Comet. First graders were asked about the good and bad things that can and do happen in their class. The best answer was Corey Curtis: He said, The best thing about first grade is when you work hard and do your best, it makes you feel good inside. Some more answers were learning , coloring , and playing outside . The Worst things they found were paddlings , doing hard work , and getting F's . The class favorites of the first grade were Eric Krai and Jennifer Nobles. These two outstanding students were asked if they had anything special to say to their classmates who voted for them. Jennifer Nobles, when presented with this question said, I am very glad to have been elected class favorite! It made me feel very happy. I thank all of my friends and classmates that voted for me. Eric Krai, with the same question, says, Thanks for electing me. I like all of you. These two excellent students and class favorites are pictured below. Since it was their first year in school, these 'little rascals came up with some unexpected answers. The first questions that they were asked was, What is the scariest thing about kindergarten? Elizabeth Deans came up with this answer, People getting hit and slammed. The second question was, What do you like the most about kindergarten? Tonya Seaberg replied, to write my name. The third question was, What do you like least about kindergarten? Jennifer Perdue came up with this strong reply, I'm not gonna stay here. The last questions that we asked these little darlings was, 'What are you going to be when you grow up? Terry Rigsby said, I'm going to be in High School. Justin Modlin and Andrew Appier decided that they want to be policemen. Well, Fountain Lake, here is an example of the thoughts of your graduating class of 1998!! We, the Purple Pride Staff, have put a lot of hard work and time into making this yearbook. The contents have now become history. Time will pass. Places will change, people will fade from our memories, but we hope this yearbook will help YOU remember the 1985-86 school year. I would like to recognize Jim Thompson and Jim Few for aiding us in taking pictures. Special recognition goes to David Beyer for designing the cover and the other special artwork throughout the book. Special thanks goes to our Layout Editor, Charlotte Sears for the cute clip art in our book. Last but not least, a BIG thanks to the entire staff, and our sponsor, Ms. Carole Ballard, for all the effort and dedication it took to make - THIS ONE'S FOR YOU.
