He was a rather cute young boy, and with his charming smile and great personality, he won the hearts of many. It didn’t take long to break away from his shyness though. Before you knew it he was in on everything from football to becoming the leader of his highly creative clubs, One of the best known of his clubs was the BOATS”. This seemed to symbolize you were someone noticed by him. Each member of this long-to-be-remem-bered club was given a name that most suited him. Some examples of these names were: MO BOAT (Charles Moline), TOW BOAT (Tony Bailey), and the leader of it all ROW BOAT. Another suprising thing that happened with this young man was the introduction of his friend TYRONE . “TYRONE” was his split personality. Most people really seemed to get a kick out of him. Mark Stiles said “That would be one friend he would never forget”. Now comes “THE BEE BROTHERS”. There are TEE (Tony Bailey), GEE (Billy Gilmore), and that once shy boy from Russellville, Ron Brazell. SENIOR MOST LIKELY TO BE REMEMBERED “RONNIE BEE Test Your Picture I.(i “Match The Songs To The Picture 1. “Gonna Have A Party 2 Born To Be Wild” 3. High On You” 1. Neon sweats, two tones, stone washed, and faded blue jeans, the layered look, menswear look, and of course GUESS apparel are just a few of the fashion fads that have passed through the halls of F.L. this year. Every person has their own style and it almost always comes out in their clothes. For instance, think of people such as Chris Elmore and Marsha Truelove and you immediately picture them in sweats. Think of Ron Brazell and you picture him in a concert T-shirt and Levis. Think of Kelly Williams or Laurie Landreth and you'll see people who are always dressed to perfection. But for most of the students at F.L. ■ ANYTHING fiOFS ' NEW IN THE MAFIA is Trina Koller, wearing the menswear look. 27 In 1985 Fast Cars A n d Fast Moves But Some Cobras Still Find Time To Take It Easy!!! THINKING OF YOUR BOYFRIEND LIFE AFTER 3:15 BEST FRIENDS 29 Happiness Is MEETING A DEADLINE CHILDHOOD FANTASIES SNEAKING CALORIES Cobras Live On Forever “SAVE OUR SCHOOL” became a popular slogan after Governor Bill Clinton introduced into legislation the new education standards. Fountain Lake was forced to meet the new standards or consolidate. To avoid consolidation and the loss of our school, we had to ask for a 12 mill increase on property tax. This meant a long, hard campaign. At first, voters were reluctant to raise their taxes. The school board and the millage committee started sending news bulletins around the community to show the facts. As the days drew closer for the election, making posters, sending letters, and registering to vote became the thing to do. The big day finally arrived! And so did all the voters. Our school was dressed in its finest, and the cars were even into the swing of things. After a long day and night, the votes had been counted. With a ration of 2:1, on March 12, 1985, Fountain Lake School was saved. The Cobra Spirit and Purple Pride will live forever. 4 u vL First Steps “Who says I’m not gorgeous?” “Beauty and brains” “Born to be wild” “Hi. SEXY E DUCATED NAUGHTY I NTIMIDATING OUTRAGEOUS R OCK-N-ROLLIN’ S ENIORS We finely made it — Fountain Lake High School Seniors of 1985. It was hard work, but we accomplished what we set out to do during our high school years. Now we have a certain feeling inside that only members of a senior class can have. Sophomores and juniors really have no idea what to expect and those who have already graduated, look back on it just as something in the past. It was probably the most exciting event in our lives. Graduation was an ending and a beginning: an ending of a group’s togetherness of twelve years and the beginning of a new life altogether. After commencement, we all went our separate ways: some chose far away places and others remained in Hot Springs. One thing was certain — everyone was looking for success and happiness, which most of the members of our class will have no trouble finding. For those of us graduating this year, in retrospect of our high school years, we saw wonderful times, such as building our first float as sophomores. As juniors we played an active role in school life. We experienced the hustle and bustle of the organization and coordination of our first prom. All these events, which now may seem distant past, were, at their respective times, an integral part of our lives. As our high school years came to an end, many of us asked ourselves questions such as, “Who am I? The answers may seem vague at the present, but as we take into consideration all the elements and aspects of our public education, and as we study more thorough formal education, the answers will seem to present themselves, as we, the seniors of 1985 become the backbone of society. Whether we believe it or not, our high school years will have a long-lasting effect on the new friendships and our goals and attitudes toward life. This is a tribute to you, seniors of 1985. ffiu o, 38 Color pages sponsored by: S S BUSINESS MACHINES, CALDWELL HARDWARE, FREEMAN SEARS, COLISEUM BOWLING, CROW’S STATION, AND EARL GILL. We began with another new coach, no seniors, and only one returning starter. Even though the won-lost record did not show it, by the end of the season the Lady Cobras had become one of the most competitive clubs in the league. This was accomplished through hard work, dedication, and the unselfishness to play as a team rather than as individuals. 1 am already excited about the prospects for next year and expect us to be a top contender for the 5-A South title. Each of these played a very important part in making the season a success. We asked Mark. Tony, James. David, Ron, Larry. Sam, Tony, Mark. GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR AND GOD BE WITH YOU! SAM ROBINSON 42 The season is never long enough. Football is a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun. Now it’s over, and I realize how much It meant to me. IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER IF YOU WIN OR LOSE. JUST HAVE FUN! Senior Super Stars Steppin Into Sports Candid Moments Cheerleaders: Steppin’ For Perfection Taken for granted, ignored, and accused of doing nothing were some problems the cheerleaders encountered. Many people don’t realize all the hard work that is required of a cheerleader. It started in July with summer camp. At the completion of the camp, long hours of practice began in preparation for football season. Pep rallies, cheers and sideline chants had to be perfected in order to have a successful season. So many things are expected of a cheerleader during football season. Not only cheering at games but also run-through posters to make, secret spirit pals to please and spirit posters to place around school. “Even though it’s a lot of hard work, it all seems worth it when you get in front of the crowd and begin cheering your team on,” said Laurie Nobles. After football season, preparation for basketball season began. New cheers had to be learned and the sideline chants became essential. Basketball season was just as hectic as football, if not more. You not only had the boys, you also had the girls to cheer for which meant twice as many games. To conclude the year the annual tryout clinic was held where cheerleaders for 1985-86 were chosen. Hopefully the new girls will carry on the fine tradition of Fountain Lake cheerleading. (center left) Cheerleaders as a group show their skill (center top row) Nice formation but hard on the arms! We were honored by having the 1st one day drill team clinic in ARK. We also went to out of state competition for the first time. Although we didn’t place, we all felt that we learned a lot. Charlotte Sears was named as our Miss Pom Pon and competed individually. When asked what it was like to ride on a bus for four hours with 13 charmers, 2 sponsors, a bus driver, and a thirteen year old, Stevie Watson responded “It was great! It gave me a chance to get to know all the girls real well and see them without their make-up.’’ Our officers went to camp at HSU and placed 2nd in competition. Although we had many handicapps to overcome, such as a young squad, and new sponsers, we feel like we had a good year. Lake had many musically talented students. The year started off with many practices-getting ready for All-Region Choir try-outs. The Junior High was highlighted with Mrs. Thompson being named Jr High Region Chairman. Ft. Lake was the host for Jr. High try-outs. Over 600 students came one Saturday to try out for the honor choir. Dempsey Rhodes was selected to represent us at the choir clinic at HSU. Sr. Region try-outs were held at Malvern High School in November Angla Michau was picked for the choir and Paula Homan was selected for an alternate Both girls attended clinic, also in Malvern. Mr Mike Dye from Dollarway in Pine Bluff directed the clinic. Our Christmas Concert was a combined Jr. and Sr. choir effort. The sacred carol program included group numbers, a duet from Jon Bryant and Ronny Nobles, and a quartet number from Angela Michau, Paula Homan, Vicki Gray and Alicia Knowlen. January brought more good news Ronny. Vicki, Angela. Paula. Alicia, and Jon. upon recommendation from Mrs Thompson, were inducted into Who’s Who in Music, a nationally recognized organization that honors High School students for their musical talent and ability. A Jr. High ensemble was established in the Spring, just in time for Region Festival. The event was held at Southwest Jr. High Not only did the ensemble participate, but the big group as well. The ensemble proved to be a talented group. Their scores were high, and they missed the Honors Festival, which is like a State Contest, by one point. In April, the Madrigals were invited to sing at Derby Days Festival. They did a 20 minute show in Arlington Park, and another show in the mini park across from the bathhouses Our Spring program was a huge production number- singing, dancing, and solo numbers. The program ranged from Country to Gospel to Pop to Broadway. It was highlighted with such songs as God Bless the USA. Getting to Know You.” and the USA for Africa hit song We Are the World.” All in all it was a very successful year for Mrs. Thompson and the Cobra Choirs. Although Bruce Westerman was not elected to the office we would like to say: “Congratulations Bruce! You represented Ft. Lake extremely well! Twelve members plus Mr. and Mrs. Warrington accompanied Bruce to Little Rock and the State Beta Club Convention. The first few hours of the Convention found the Ft. Lake Beta members campaigning hard for Bruce. At the Camelot Hotel later that night, Bruce and the other candidates made their campaign speeches to the first General Assembly. Each speech was followed by a skit to promote the candidate. Mark Stiles did a rap to help Bruce’s campaign. After the installation of the new officers, there was a talent program Following this came adjournment until the dance that night. Other projects the club undertook this year were a service project to benefit the community, and a selling project to raise money to buy the Beta Stoles which will be given to the graduat ing Beta members. While Susan was there, several members attended Recreation Camp where they did everything from playing tennis to wrestling. Then school started and it was fair time. Several members showed pigs and cows in the Saline and Garland County fairs and the Ark. State Fair. The chapter won many ribbons and awards. Mark Partain, Bruce Westerman, and Steve and Mike Sisney attended National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. After National Convention we were kept busy with fruit sales and raising money for the National FFA Foundation. In March, Fountain Lake hosted the Couchdale Sule-area Parlimentary Proceedure and the Public Speaking Contests. The Parlimentary team won first place, Craig Rhodes placed second in the Extemporaneus Speaking contest and Bruce Westerman won the Prepared Public speaking contest. It was then time to go to District. Our Parlimentary team lost at District, while Bruce won the Prepared Public Speaking Contest. Another exciting year was capped off by the FFA Banquet. Bruce Westerman won the Public Speaking Contest Randy Wyatt took Sandra Mercer seriously when she said she was hungry. The Spanish Club was started and officers were elected. The sponsor is Mrs. Lynn Turner who teaches Spanish. The club has already gained a reputation as being one of the most active clubs on campus. Some of the activities included sending out Turkey Grams for Thanksgiving and Santa Grams for Christmas, raffling off a four foot high Smurfette pinata stuffed with candy and attending a Spanish Festival at U.A.L.R in which several members won ribbons and certificates. The Spanish club also celebrated Christmas by eating at Pablo’s Restaurant. The club is looking forward to expanding in the coming years. Right “Pedro takes a siesta! Below • Richard Andrews. Plagued by injuries and numerous other uncontrollable circumstances, the Cobras found this was simply not possible, despite one-hundred percent effort from each and every team member. Although they didn’t get the undefeated season they had worked so hard for, they did learn many valuable lessons to apply to next year’s winning season. He felt that the inexperience of his team contributed to the games in the loss column, while hard work won the remaining games. His plans are to work on their shooting, jumping ability, and team play. Hancock expects to have a strong team next year. We also reached the finals of the Garland County Tourney and finished the season with a 12-5 record. Although we are losing six freshmen to the senior team, we have a strong group of 8th and 9th graders returning, so the expectations for another winning season are great!” —Coach Warrington. He’s now sitting with God, wearing proud his dazzling smile. He was sent here for a purpose from Heaven to make us see, The sun needs rain for a rainbow to be. He wasn’t sent to make us sad, or teach us his own lifestyle He was sent to make us happy, but only for a while. He looks down at us now, and 1 see him shake his head. Then I see him smile and this is what he says: Do not follow my lead, for even the strong may fail. Go instead where there is a path, and then leave a trail. God’s arms encircle him now, and I think I know, That God turned to him and said, “Son it’s time to go.’’ I see them walk away now, into clouds and skies of blue.
