It stands for pride. It is great enough to for freedom The stars are for the 50 states, and the stripes arc counted for the original 13 colonies. On the flag are three colors: red. white and blue The of stars is blue with white stars. The stripes are red and white. When the wind blows I love to hear the flag make a snap- ping noise. Fouke Gets New Flag Since we are on the subject of Out of the Ordinary how does a 30 ft. x 60 ft. flag with a 127 ft. pole catch your attention. This pole is the highest flag pole in the state of Ar- kansas. It also has a basketball sized ball on the top of it that is IS inches thick. The '84-’85 Student council led by Julie Shumaker came up with the idea. In the fall of 1985, Sena Heyn began sponsor- ing the Student Council and carried out the idea with special help from Mr. Bill Mears. high school principal. The project grew to be the Arkansas Sesquicentennial project for the school. All of the labor done on the flag and on the pole was completed by volunteers. Many dedicated citi- zens of Fouke volunteered their ser- vices. Howard Walraven and John David Barker supervised and di- rected the project. By the end of the school year the dream was ful- filled. There was a reception held to honor the workers who made it all possible and to present the flag to the community and school. Former Governor Orval Faubus was present and took part in the dedication cer- emony. This was a special day for Fouke. We extend a special thanks to everyone who helped this project be accomplished. Standing before the flag are Princi- pal Bill Mears. Mrs. Mears, former governor Orval Faubus, and Dr. Joe Gordon of Hot Springs. 4 Theme
