Seniors Spend A Day At The Capitol This summer seven seniors had the opportunity to work in the capitol for a day. Each student was assigned to a department of the Secretary of State's office. There they learned the basic fundamentals and operations of the office. Later in the day, they met with State Auditor Julia Hughes Jones who gave them a tour of the capitol. Each of the students enjoyed the opportu- nity to work in the capitol and to see how the Secretary of State's office is operated. Lisa Norris worked in the information office at the capitol. Boys’ State £ Girls’ State Each summer the American Legion sponsors Boys' and Girls' State. These programs are designed to give young men and women an in-depth look at local, state, and federal government. Delegates are chosen for their leadership, citizenship, and scholar- ship. Girls' State was held from June 8 through 13 on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University in Arka- delphia. Boys' State was held June 9 through 14 on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. These delegates had the opportunity to listen to many prominent speakers such as Governor Bill Clinton. Mrs. Hillary Clinton. Secretary of State Bill McCuen. and Attorney General Steve Clark. Visiting the campus was also one of the many exciting activi- ties at both Boys' and Girls' State. This one week program prove to be a week of unforgettable experiences. Spending a week with over 1000 boys or girls our own age makes for new friendships. Delegates were also given the opportu- nity to spend the day in workshops of their career choice. In these workshops accountants, lawyers, teachers, and many other career men and women spoke to the delegates about their jobs and answered any questions the delegates had. Jay Oliver. Darren Harris, and Philip McFerrin were chosen as delegates to the 1986 Boys' State. Kelli Eaves. Toni Crabtree, and Carmen Robertson were chosen as delegates to the 1986 Girls' State.
