Meeting State Standards The Arkansas legislature has set up new standards that schools must meet by the summer of 1987 to keep their accredition. The Fouke School District has completed a six-year plan to meet these new standards. The elementary curriculum meets the standards with the addition of Arkansas history and exercises in foreign language. Seventh and eighth grade courses are all in place. Practical arts and career orientation will be required of all students next year. The high school offers fifty-one units this year. New courses are speech, fine arts, band, general math II, and general science. New courses for next year will be journalism, computer science. Spanish II. and econom- ics. Course content guides are being used or being developed. The objec- tives are being used for evaluation. Discipline policies are being changed to meet the requirements. New policies for textbook selection, extracurricular activities, and homework should take care of these areas. Class size is a problem at the elementary school with kindergarten, fifth, and sixth grades still too large. However, a new wing has been added to the elementary school to help with this problem. There will also be a new cafeteria. Additional positions will be filled in the elementary, including a counselor and a nurse, as well as more teachers. All special education programs comply with standards! both schools have a gifted and talented programs in operation, and Fouke students may participate in a variety of educational activities outside the regular school. Fouke School District has made every effort to comply with the stan- dards by the beginning of the 1987-88 school year.
