1987 Panther Volume 39 Fouke, Arkansas 71837 Fouke Gets New Flag Since we are on the subject of Out of the Ordinary how does a 30 ft. x 60 ft. flag with a 127 ft. pole catch your attention. This pole is the highest flag pole in the state of Ar- kansas. It also has a basketball sized ball on the top of it that is IS inches thick. The '84-’85 Student council led by Julie Shumaker came up with the idea. In the fall of 1985, Sena Heyn began sponsor- ing the Student Council and carried out the idea with special help from Mr. Bill Mears. high school principal. The project grew to be the Arkansas Sesquicentennial project for the school. All of the labor done on the flag and on the pole was completed by volunteers. Many dedicated citi- zens of Fouke volunteered their ser- vices. Howard Walraven and John David Barker supervised and di- rected the project. By the end of the school year the dream was ful- filled. There was a reception held to honor the workers who made it all possible and to present the flag to the community and school. Former Governor Orval Faubus was present and took part in the dedication cer- emony. This was a special day for Fouke. We extend a special thanks to everyone who helped this project be accomplished. Standing before the flag are Princi- pal Bill Mears. Mrs. Mears, former governor Orval Faubus, and Dr. Joe Gordon of Hot Springs. 4 Theme What The Flag Means To Me To begin with I would like to say the flag means a lot to me. I have not had any expe ■ without freedom. I me wjih it eve ■ lam so used to it I never reallv it The flag means freedom us apart from other Coun Josh Jones The flag means freedom for all the people in the United States They honor the flag and take good care of it The flag means alor to me. It stands for pride. It is great enough to for freedom The stars are for the 50 states, and the stripes arc counted for the original 13 colonies. On the flag are three colors: red. white and blue The of stars is blue with white stars. The stripes are red and white. When the wind blows I love to hear the flag make a snap- ping noise. Kjrron Essley Beyond the Ordinary! Fouke Celebrates Arkansas’ Birthday! Sesquicentennial - 150 Years Mr. McFerrin supervised a special program attended by all elementary stu- dents and teachers. They all returned to their classrooms where they had cake, cookies, and other refreshments. Happy Birthday Arkansas! Quilts and Costumes Elementary classes made quilts and maps showing important facts about Ar- kansas. During the elementary's birthday celebration teachers and students dres- sed in pioneer fashion. Miller County Through the ages Frontier Day” was hosted by the Miller County Historical Society at the Miller County Fair grounds in Fouke, on May 3, 1986. Free entertainment, homecooked vittles. arts and crafts, con- tests, and exhibits were en- joyed. Miller County Historical Society hosted Frontier Day ”. Meeting State Standards The Arkansas legislature has set up new standards that schools must meet by the summer of 1987 to keep their accredition. The Fouke School District has completed a six-year plan to meet these new standards. The elementary curriculum meets the standards with the addition of Arkansas history and exercises in foreign language. Seventh and eighth grade courses are all in place. Practical arts and career orientation will be required of all students next year. The high school offers fifty-one units this year. New courses are speech, fine arts, band, general math II, and general science. New courses for next year will be journalism, computer science. Spanish II. and econom- ics. Course content guides are being used or being developed. The objec- tives are being used for evaluation. Discipline policies are being changed to meet the requirements. New policies for textbook selection, extracurricular activities, and homework should take care of these areas. Class size is a problem at the elementary school with kindergarten, fifth, and sixth grades still too large. However, a new wing has been added to the elementary school to help with this problem. There will also be a new cafeteria. Additional positions will be filled in the elementary, including a counselor and a nurse, as well as more teachers. All special education programs comply with standards! both schools have a gifted and talented programs in operation, and Fouke students may participate in a variety of educational activities outside the regular school. Fouke School District has made every effort to comply with the stan- dards by the beginning of the 1987-88 school year. Here is something beyond the ordi- nary - a band at Fouke! This is the first year Fouke has had a band since 1948. This time we not only have a high school band we also have a fifth and sixth grade band too. Even though the bands have come a long way. (thanks to Mr. George Davis), they still have a long way to go. With a lot of hard work and dedication we should have a marching band by the 88-89 school year! We are very sure all the bands will make Fouke very proud of them. 10 Theme Academics Other new courses at Fouke are the fine arts course and the global studies course. The fine arts course, taught by Mrs. Gray, cov- ers such areas as dance, music, and theater. The global studies course, taught by Ms. Heyn, teaches students to take major global issues and re- late them to their community, state, and world. The course also teaches them to connect the inner de- pendence between all peoples of the world. The Arkansas Minimum Performance Test will be given to grades 3. 6. and 8. The Metropolitan Achieve- ment Test will be given to grades 4. 7, and 10. The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills will be given to grades 7-12. The Otis-Lennon School Abili- ty Test (Intermediate, and Ad- vanced Levels) will be given to grades 7-12. The Test of Cogitive Skills will be given to grades 7-12. The California Achievement Test will be given to grades 7- 12. Th PSAT Test (a preparatory for college entrance exams) will be given to grades 10-1 I. The ACT College Entrance Exam, will be given to grades I I and 12. The SAT College Entrance Exam will be given to grades I I and 12. Testing Testing is an important part of the educational process at Fouke. It enables the students, parents, and faculty to see what areas the students excel in and what areas the students need to improve. Testing also allows the student to discover what fields they may like to pursue. It prepares them for tests they may take for College entrance or job applications. This year the stu- dents must pass a basic skills test in order to advance to a higher grade. IT Theme College or Career? Jeff. Jay and Jim look at college booklets. College or Career? That seems to be the question all of the seniors face at this time every year. Some of the seniors will go to college. They will receive training for the career that will suit them best. The rest of the seniors will choose a career over college. Whatever our seniors decide to do, we the Panther staff, wish them the very best of everything. Most of the seniors get help from Mr. Bon- ham in finding out about a certain college. Mr Mears. Lana, and Carmen review their transcripts to make sure they have all the courses they will need. SFCE-7 Cary Dunn of the Arkansas Army National Guard holds a Career Planning Workshop for all seniors. Theme 13 Summer Activities ... These programs are designed to give young men and women an in-depth look at local, state, and federal government. Delegates are chosen for their leadership, citizenship, and scholar- ship. Girls' State was held from June 8 through 13 on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University in Arka- delphia. Boys' State was held June 9 through 14 on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. These delegates had the opportunity to listen to many prominent speakers such as Governor Bill Clinton. Mrs. Hillary Clinton. Secretary of State Bill McCuen. and Attorney General Steve Clark. Visiting the campus was also one of the many exciting activi- ties at both Boys' and Girls' State. This one week program prove to be a week of unforgettable experiences. Spending a week with over 1000 boys or girls our own age makes for new friendships. Delegates were also given the opportu- nity to spend the day in workshops of their career choice. In these workshops accountants, lawyers, teachers, and many other career men and women spoke to the delegates about their jobs and answered any questions the delegates had. Jay Oliver. Darren Harris, and Philip McFerrin were chosen as delegates to the 1986 Boys' State. Kelli Eaves. Toni Crabtree, and Carmen Robertson were chosen as delegates to the 1986 Girls' State. Seniors Spend A Day At The Capitol This summer seven seniors had the opportunity to work in the capitol for a day. Each student was assigned to a department of the Secretary of State's office. There they learned the basic fundamentals and operations of the office. Later in the day, they met with State Auditor Julia Hughes Jones who gave them a tour of the capitol. Each of the students enjoyed the opportu- nity to work in the capitol and to see how the Secretary of State's office is operated. Lisa Norris worked in the information office at the capitol. The members build a float for the Four-States Fair Parade every year. The members also have the opportunity to run for a state office. FBLA competes in district and state competitions. Their annual Business Report won first, plus the Executive Games Team won first in oral presentation. Many of the FBLA members compete in many different events at district and state. They also run for district and state offices. The G T class has kept busy this year by competing in the Arkansas Gazette Stockmarket Game. The class was divided into four teams. Each team was given $100,000 to transact stock daily. Two of the teams ranked in the top 30 out of 430 teams competing in Arkansas. There was also a Jr. High Knowledge Master Quiz Open which was played on a computer. The quiz bowl team ranked ninth in Arkansas. The Sr. High Choir has also done well this year. Four of the members made All-Region, and two made All-State. As you can see this has been a very competitive year for the students. The competitions have allowed them to be able to take pride in their accomplishments and to prove that they're truly beyond the ordinary. It would be safe to say that the Panthers of '86 were Beyond the Or- dinary! When the season started in March, not many expected this team of mostly underclassmen to make it to the state tournament in May. When May 19th rolled around, where were the Panthers? Nowhere else but UCA field in Conway. En route to the state tourna- ment. the Panthers won the Bi-Dis- trict Championship. The Bi-District tournament was played at Taylor, and there the Panthers defeated Taylor 7-6, and Bradley 12-4. The District Tournament was played at Junction City. In the opening game of the tour- nament. the Panthers faced a tough opponent, Smackover. and came home with a 7-6 victory. After de- feating Smackover. the Panthers faced the host team. Junction City, in the finals. They finished Runner-Up to Junction City in a tough battle that resulted in a 4-3 loss. Placing 2nd in the District Tournament made the Panthers eligible to play in the South- ern Regional Tournament which would also be played at Junction City. In the first game of the Regional Tour- nament. the Panthers faced Horatio, who they defeated 6-3. The next team to fall at the feet of the Panthers would be Woodlawn. who the Pan- thers defeated 8-5. This meant that once again the Panthers would face Junction City in the finals. The Pan- thers came up short, losing 9-7, to state-ranked Junction City, and fin- ishing Runner-Up in the Southern Re- gional. The top two teams from each region participated in the State Tour- nament in Conway. The Panthers would face the winner of the North- west Regional. Lavaca, in their first game of the State Tournament. Al- though the Panthers lost 4-2 to La- vaca. they along with their fans were proud of their unforgettable accom- plishments in 1986. The Panthers finished the regu- lar season with a 13-6 record. Each player contributed greatly to the suc- cess of the Panthers. Jeff Pritchett led the team in batting with a .451 aver- age. Shane Price led the team in home runs with 5. and also led the team in RBI’s with 24. Shawn Price was the winningest pitcher with a 10-6 record. For the first time the Panthers had 5 players chosen for All-District and the same 5 were chosen for All- Regional. Two players received Hon- orable Mention All-District. We don't know where the years have gone; they seem to have melted like snow in the sun. You are now a young lady about to go into the world and make a place for yourself. Just like yesterday your Dad and I wonder what tomorrow will hold for you. Although you have not al- ways agreed with the rules we have given you and we haven’t always seen eye to eye. we only make rules be- cause we love you so very much. Since the day you were that tiny little baby in the nursery until today when you are a beautiful young lady, we have only wanted the very best for you. We pray that you will continue to walk with the Sr. Lord and let him guide you in the way that he wants you to go. You have always been his and only a loan to us. Although you may not realize it, we are very thankful to have you. Keep your eyes on Him and there’s nothing you can’t be or do. Remember, no matter what tomorrow brings we will always love you.
