From a yearbook work- shop sometime last summer, until the very moment you finally re- ceived your copy of the 1986 Pan- ther, a spontaneous effort has been made to give you A VIEW WITHIN. A View Within What? Like all good questions, this too deserves a good an- swer. People, places, groups, and activi- ties, but more than that—the individual attitudes and characteristics that make that subject special was the view we were looking for. Sports would not be sports, organizations could not be orga- nized, and neither would people be anything more than human beings without the challenges, goals, opinions, and effort put forth by each of them. The purpose of this book was to help you remember those people, activities, and events of the Fouke Schools - whether they be elementary or high school - not just from the surface, but from A VIEW WITHIN. Before the task came of putting the yearbook together, we first had to deal with the problems of a rel- atively inexperienced staff, covering both el- ementary and high school activities in one book, and limited funds for such an ex- pensive publication. It wasn't easy nor even desirable at all times, but somehow we did it—we gave you A VIEW WITHIN. From the coming of a new superin- tendent and the continual striving to meet the new Arkansas educational standards, to the 150th birthday of Ar- kansas' statehood, the 1985-86 school year was one of change and celebra- tion. Celebration came through the vic- tories in both sports events and organi- zational competitive events. A Fouke High School Quiz Bowl Team got off the ground as well as a Gifted and Tal- ented program. Students also helped start Fouke's first Historical Society. As you look through the Panther and remember those special people and events, realize that no book could possibly imitate your own view of those memories that were special to you. Turn the page now and enjoy the view - the VIEW WITHIN. Selling Ihe scene for what goes on within the lives of Fouke students is the small but diverse community of Fouke, Arkansas. Opening • Student Life 3 Summer Of '85 r VIEW N WITHIN I une, July, and August! jokingly exclaimed li- I brarian and yearbook sponsor Sherry Sorrell when asked what her tnree favorite things about being a teacher were. After nine months of hus- tle and bustle at school, Fouke students as well as fac- ulty members were ready for their three months of 'rest.' Well, maybe not exactly rest, but certainly a change in pace. Students went from homework and tests to parties, vacations, and summer jobs. Vacation- ing with family, friends, church groups, and even school organizations was done as far away as New York and L.A. Vacationing away from home was definitely not the only part of the summer though for kids found a multitude of things to do right at home or close by. Crystal Springs, Pebble Beach, and Rolling Waters all provided an escape from the heat. There was anything from riding three-wheelers to playing softball for activ- ity. Spring Lake Park provided the calm and quiet area for picnics in the day and came alive with the some- what wild and fast life at night. But all too soon the days of summer were gone and it was back to school again for one more year. I Spring Lake Park was found to be fun at night as well as the day by sophomore Kim Smith and junior Kelli Eaves. Sophomore J.J. Johnson snaps this photo of Corky the largest Killer Whale in captivity, while at Marineland in Los Angeles, California. Disneyland is full of surprises as found out by senior Craig Johnson while being snatched for a kiss by Minnie Mouse. MacDonald's playground is fun for even Fouke's Sr. High Cheerleaders after a busy day of cheerlead- ing camp at Ruston, Louisiana. ORGANIZATIONS Preparing Us For Tomorrow At Fouke High School organi- zations are a big part of school life. These clubs help teach us respon- sibility and cooperation. They also prepare us for tomorrow and help develop our character. A special thanks is given to the sponsors of these organizations, who devote much of their time and hard work to make these organizations a success. Preparing the yearbook takes lots of work and time. Organizations 11 Go take that picture! Help me write this copy! Caption this pic- ture! Where is Mrs. Sorrell?! If you've entered the yearbook room you've heard those familiar words. From ''Day One the 1985-86 Annual Staff was determined to make this annual one of the best ever. Each member knew in order for this to happen they would have to pull their own weight. Each member of the staff was assigned so many pages and these pages were to be finished before a specific deadline. This often meant staying up late at night putting the final touches on their pages. The Staff has worked very hard and are very proud of this annual!! Ken Mayton Rebecca Combs Mrs. Sorrell - Sponsor Jamie Scott - Asst. The Beta Club was involved in many different activities this year. For their money making projects they sold snacks and doughnuts once a month. They made Christmas baskets and gave them out, built the Football Homecoming Float, and entered another float in the 4 States Fair Parade. The Beta Club nominated Kelli Eaves to be a candidate for state secretary. All the members worked very hard trying to get Kelli elected. Not only did they campaign for her at convention they also helped her with her skit and signs. Although Kelli didn't win, each member learned something from this experience. The Beta Club also entered a skit in the talent competition, they dressed up like the Chicago Bears and did the Superbowl Shuffle; the audience loved it so much that it ranked highest in audience participation. Even though they didn't win the talent competition the Bears still won the Superbowl!!! Compliments Of Organizations 15 TEXARKANA NATIONAL BANK 792-7166 100 W. BROAD TEXARKANA, TX ALRIGHT Far away in Orlando, Florida a new phrase had been implanted in the minds of Future Business Leaders from all over the South — it's gonna be alright! Little did anyone know that there was one small Arkansas chapter represented at that Fall Southern Leadership Conference to whom these four words fit perfectly. That chapter, of course, was none other than the one made up of Future Business Leaders from Fouke High School. And, it has been right. Since the beginning of the Fouke chapter in 1981, Fouke Future Business Leaders have certainly had their share of achievements and successes. Beginning with Rodney LaCrone as Fouke's first ticket to the national convention in 1982, Fouke has attended every other national convention either because of a first place state winner or a state or district officer from Fouke. Because of this, Fouke Future Business Leaders have traveled as far away as Indianapolis and San Francisco. Has FBLA been a success? YES! responded adviser Frances Jones, when asked this question. I feel that FBLA has helped students make business connections after graduation and I think we are making leaders. There's no doubt that FBLA has produced some outstanding leaders from Fouke. Rodney LaCrone, a member of Fouke's first FBLA chapter, is now the state President for Phi Beta Lambda, the college equivalent of FBLA. Senior Tony Walden has also exemplified outstanding leadership ability in becoming Fouke's first district officer and state Vice-President. In the future, Fouke will undoubtedly enter numerous students in competitive business events at district and state level. Those students playing Executive Games hope to once again pride Fouke with first place. Sophomore John Coward and junior Toni Crabtree have planned on running for district and state offices. As far as winning goes, well, it couldn't have been said better than the words of Fouke's own adviser, We always have won and we always will. Serving refreshments after the back-to-school FBLA orientation is junior Kim Walraven. Everyone had fun and most of the members are now able to go to any Spanish restaurant and order breakfast with confidence. Governor's School was held from June 16 through July 24 on the campus of Hendrix College in Conway. Four hundred gifted and tal- ented students of all types from all over Arkansas were involved in Governor's School. The delegates were involved in college-level study in three differ- ent areas. The areas were designed to enrich the mind, blow it apart , and then put it all back together. unique and re- warding experi- ence. - L. McAdams over 1,000 boys from all over Arkansas gathered on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway from June 10 through 15 for Boys State 1985. State was also held at the same time on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. These Junior Class delegates selected for Boys or Girls State were chosen on the basis of interview, references, and applications. The purpose of this American Legion sponsored event was to provide upcoming high school seniors with an in-depth look at local, state, and federal government. The delegates listened to speakers such as Governor Bill Clinton, Senator Dale Bumpers, Arkansas Attorney General Steve Clark, Arkansas Secretary of State Bill McCuen, and many other notable speakers. If one was to look for a class in Fouke High School with students of many talents, the Senior Class would defi- nitely be paid a visit. Everybody has some kind of special ability or talent, but the seniors of '86 certainly stood out above the rest. From the time the seniors were sophomores, they partici- pated in the BETA Club Feature Talent Event at the Arkansas BETA Convention where they prided themselves with first place in 1984. When they became Juniors, they outshined any other junior class in their production of the junior play. The junior play of js-i '85 was special in that it was a sort of variety talent show which included dancing rou- tines and lip synching, act- ing, and sheer comedy. The seniors have con- tinued to use their various I talents in BETA skits, writing and designing FBLA re- ports, building BETA floats, drawing and painting the football break-through banners, the senior play, and in just day to day personal pleasure. An average assess- i ment of talents of 1 the Class of '86 in- cluded singing, danc- ing, hunting, piano playing, rappin' photography, act- ing, comedy, writ- ing, sketching, and drawing. It was a feeling of doubt, wonder and anticipation. Thoughts of I can't believe this is it and Where do we go from here? dominated the minds of each senior. As the year progressed, the reality that this was actually their last year of high school came more and more into focus. Constant reminders such as order- ing graduation announcements, receiv- ing letter after letter from numerous colleges and universities, writing those dreaded Sr. research papers, and mak- ing preparations for the Sr. trip made it almost impossible to forget that this was not just another year. Like any other graduating class, the seniors were faced with college and career choices. Mr. Bonham proved to be very helpful in assisting seniors with college choices, scholarships, grants, taking ACT test, and all other facets of college preparation. The choices were endless: public or private, large or small, in or out-of-state, very expensive or the more affordable. All of these choices had to be seriously considered. One might have expected the senior class to get by with as little classes as possible. Although some did just that, others were more concerned with taking as many classes as possible which would help them in life after high school. Physics was offered for the first time at F.H.S. and a surprising number of seniors decided to take this advanced science course. The Office Technology Lab was filled to the capacity vyith seniors who wanted to train in business. The yearbook staff and audio visual class had seniors which hoped to enter into some type of journalism or media work. And of course, English was a must for all seniors. Even though many would be mov- ing away for college or some other reason, friendships had been made that would last lifetimes. While in physics seniors experimented with gravitational laws. Seniors order graduation announcements with the help of H. Iones representative Gordon Hale. Kevin Thomas, Shannon Newton, and Paul McDonald wrote diligently on their senior research papers. Olan Mills representative, Doug Shelley, tells senior lamie Scott to tilt your head just a little more this way while taking her senior portraits. A. H. S. Provides Hands-on Experience Six seniors from F. H. S. attended Arkansas High for the vocational education program this year. The students stayed for three periods each school day and studied either cosmetology, auto mechanics, or computer technology. Some, like Kim Teer and Bryan Floyd hope to make careers out of their field of study while others like Damon Fant and Monica Sanders feel that their study at Arkansas High will help them in some other career choice. The students received hands-on experience and also earned three credits. The seniors who participated in the Arkansas High program were Bryan Floyd, Barry Lafayette, and Chad Russell (auto mechanics), Kim Teer and Monica Sanders (cosmetology), and Damon Fant (computer technology). A Closer Look A Winning Season This year's athletics depart- ment was sensational! That word sums up every sport. Even though only certain people play sports, everyone is involved - students, faculty, parents, even the youngest people. The people who faithfully came to all the games played a big part in the success of the teams. They were the ones who cheered along with the cheerleaders and gave the players enough enthusi- asm to play their best. All in all, everyone helps make A Winning Season. This game will long be remembered by all as it was during this game that we lost Coach Sammy Gill. The team was even more determined to succeed and to give it their best efforts. Coach Steve Halter became head coach and led the team the rest of the year. Senior High Lady Panthers This year has been both a year of tragedy and triumph. The senior high Lady Panthers started the year off working hard and getting to know their new coach, Sammy Gill. The loss of Coach Gill was a trying and difficult time for these girls. Coach Mike Hobson was brought in to replace Coach Gill. Coach Hobson was well accepted by the girls. He stressed hard work and discipline which indeed is needed to have a winning team. This year the senior high Lfcdy Panthers team was small in number. There were only nine players on the team, none of whom were seniors. Hard work, a lot of sweat, guts, and determination went into making the Senior High Lady Panthers a success.
