Fouke Students in National Competition Have you ever been involved in a project that you knew was destined to win? When our students entered the History Contest this past spring as Magnolia and won, then went on to win at state level, it was as though the script had been written beforehand. An educa- tional trip to our nation’s capital was like a dream come true. Below is a list of all the organizations and individuals that helped pay the expenses for this real life dream. A special thank you again to everyone who helped financially and prayerfully. We were blessed with an accident - free adventure and given the opportunity to fulfill a fantasy shared by many. From the very beginning Sorrell wanted to make this a HISTORICAL trip and on the way to the contest, the group visited Vicksburg National Cemetery and Battlegrounds where the Civil War was fought. Further east we approached the Great Smokey Mountains. We visited the souvenir shops and refreshment stands in Gatlinburg and saw live Indians on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. We hiked 5 ' i miles straight up and 5 Vt miles straight down on Mt. LeConte. We talked of bears and hoped to see one, but all we saw was what was left alter one had helped himself to a pack. Just traveling with the group was an experience in itself. Several of the families ’of the group drove with us. The first few days were utter chaos, but we were soon able to handle anything with a lot less confusion. We had CB radios in our cars and probably couldn’t have stayed together in all the traffic without them. The truckers treated our caravan great — making holes in the traffic for us country folks to ease into. We were very pleased with the way all the kids got along together. Everyone had a good time. At Virginia Beach we saw one of the most spectacular sights — the Atlantic Ocean. We loved the waves, the sand, and the treasures we found on the beach. The Naval Base at Norfolk gave us a chance to see first hand the naval power of ouf country. We didn’t realize how big thaw ships were until we came up beside them as they were docked. Our guide told us that these ships could stay out af sea for five years and that the submarines could stay fox thirteen years ifithey needed to do.Aft.,-. ------------------------ hIUA Jamestown and Williamsburg were examples of the early settlers’ stubborn will to survive. It’s amazing to see those huge buildings in Washington after visiting the birthplace of our nation. Our first adventure in Washington, D.C. was with the metro subway system and the traffic. We finally figured out what to do and where to go. The Capital is really beautiful — our cameras clicked and everyone smiled. We were finally on the steps of our nation’s capital, and it was difficult to express our pride, our patriotism, and the thankfulness we felt when we thought about what it meant to each of us to be Americans. Senator David Pryor welcomed our group to his office. He explained many of the legislative procedures and structures to us. He gave us special passes so we could visit the Senate and the House of Representatives. We watched as Senator Kennedy ad- dressed the Senate and saw Amy Carter who is a Senate page this year. We saw all the famous monuments. Touring the White House was a treat. We had to be searched whenever we went into a high security area. At the National Archives we saw the Declaration of Independence and other famous documents. It would have taken us a month to see everything in the Smithsonian buildings. The U.S. Court House held the most intrigue for us. Inside its walls, John Hinkley was on trial for attempted assassination of President Reagan. One of the newswomen for a national TV network gave us the real scoop about the trial. Washington was very beautiful at night and we enjoyed all but ten minutes of our night time tour. Those ten minutes were a horror we will never forget. We took only one wrong turn, but we ended up on the riverfront slum area of Washington, D.C. How thankful we were for our safe return out of this area. The National History Day Contest was held at the University of Maryland. There was some tough competition but each of our groups placed in the top 25ri of the national entries. WF ARE VERY PROUD OF OUR FOUKE STUDENTS! HOW THE CONTEST BENEFITED US: 1. Each of us gained confidence in ourselves and in our abilities. 2. We learned we could speak before others as we talked to the civic groups and later to the contest judges. 3. We learned the thrill of winning and the agony of defeat. 4. We learned you can be proud when you’ve given your best. 5. We learned that many people cared about us — not only family and friends but people we didn’t even know. 6. We learned about our heritage and the price many paid to keep it secure for us. 7. We learned that whether you are from the north, south, east, or west we are all Americans. 8. Each of us has gained different experiences and ideas that will affect our lives forever. WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR PART IN HELPING US ACQUIRE THIS LIFETIME EXPER- IENCE. CONTRIBUTORS i 25.00 A 4 1 Sal- At and Franc- Jon- 20.00 Arnold. Eddie • Jo ten» Ring Co. 25.00 Atuway.
