TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration ......... —L V. __ 9 High School ..... 17 Who’s Who 45 V The moments each and every one of us spend together at school are never forgotten. That’s why we, the '79 Panther Annual Staff, have chosen “Always and Forever” as our theme to represent the great year of 1979. The things we say, the things we do, and the places we go are cherished throughout our lives. As we leave this school year, a certain feeling creeps upon all of us. A feeling no one person can describe exactly like anyone else. But, we all can surely say that it was a good year. The memories are to stay with us, “Always and Forever. So many things happen at school from day to day. Even though these pictures capture only a few of these everyday happenings at our school, we will remember just about everything. As we grow, our memories will grow with us. And they will always remain a part of each and everyone. Mary Sprayberry - Raymond Caswell The name Miss Mary is one of the best known names at Fouke High School. She has served as secretary for the past 25 years. Mary Sprayberry was born in Vivian, Louisiana. She graduated from Fouke in 1940 and has remained here since that time. She held many types of jobs after graduation. Some of these included being a clerk at Newberry’s, at Red River Depot, at Safeway, and as a telephone operator. In September of 1945, Mrs. Sprayberry accepted the job as Fouke Secretary. She became known as Miss Mary to everyone. She has been an important part of our school. As our school grew, Miss Mary’s knowledge of bookkeeping grew with it. This knowledge is well known and the government has yet to come up with a form she cannot handle. Raymond Caswell has served on our school board for the past 25 years. He is a hard-working, dedicated board member who has done much to help improve our educational facility. He is an Oklahoma native moving here in 1932. He started farming as a share cropper but later owned his farm. In 1959 he built a modern cotton gin. Valley Gin, where the local farmers could bring their cotton crops to be baled and shipped to market. He is a professional cotton grader and buyer as well as a farmer and cattleman. He is very active in farm-related activities. At the present time he is President of Miller-Bowie County Farmers’ Association and holds officer positions in several others. Also, he is active in church and community affairs. He helped to organize Haley Lake Church and has been a deacon for the past 44 years. He has won several awards including Who's W7ho in Arkansas and the local Friend to education. Mr. Caswell and Miss Mary have been with our school for a quarter of a century. Their character, honesty, and integrity have never been questioned. They are truly devoted to the responsibilities that go with the positions they hold. These reasons, and many more, are why the annual staff, on behalf of the students and _ teachers of Fouke School, do dedicate the ’79 Panther Yearbook to them. It is just a small way of saying . . . jr Wi sGf' v aJHI V w There were many activities that took place at our school during the year. Each Student participated with enthusiasm and spirit. Some of these activities included: (Top Left) The Srs'. Haunted House; (Top Right) Cap and Gown measurements for graduation; (Middle) School Clean-up Day; (Bottom Left) Candy Sales; (Bottom Right) Ping-Pong tournaments. Everyone worked together to make this school year successful. It went by fast, (too fast, some might say) but it was a good year. We all had fun working and playing together. Administration Board Of Education ‘years as member President - Bob Ransdell 3 years Vice-President - Raymond Caswell 25 years Secretary - Dennis Eaves 2 years Albert Thrasher 8 years Bob Ransdell and Dennis Oliver help to improve our school with new doors to the auditorium. Dennis Oliver 6 years 10 Meet The Boss The annual staff appreciates Mr. Davis and his efforts in trying to give us a better school system. We wish him success with everything that he is trving to accomplish. Good luck in the years to Mr. Wilburn Davis started off the 78- 79 school year as superintendent of Fouke High School. He held the position of superintendent at other schools with the Van Cove School District being the last before coming here. conic Dear Students: This message is to express my feelings toward the student body of our school. This year most of you have experienced the only change of administrators in your school career. I’m sure you entered the year filled with anxiety and suspense. Well, I had very similar feelings because I, too, wondered just what our student body would be like. Now I no longer suspect or wonder about you You have CLASS! I urge each of you to join with me and all your teachers as we work to make a good school even better. Sincerely, V ilburn Davis Superintendent The Old and New Mr. Frank McFerrin has worked hard for six years as full time Principal of the Elementary. He has worked for the school as part time teacher and part time principal for seven years. Mr. McFerrin is always helping his students and trying to make things better for them. Left: Mr. McFerrin helps students with library books. Lower right:Mr. McFerrin is busy at work. This is Mr. Joe Crockett’s first year as Principal of Fouke High School and he has done a good job. Mr. Crockett came to Fouke with many new methods and ideas for doing things for the students. One means is his way of cutting down on tardies, which has had quite an effect! If there is one thing left to say about Mr. Crockett it is that he gets the job done. Above: Mr. Crockett stops looking for a file long enough to give us a smile. Left: Mr. Crockett supervises the parking lot while the students leave the school. Office Staff The office staff has done a good job this year. Miss Mary and Mrs. Barker work hard each day keeping books, collecting money and many other jobs. June Bishop, Susan Sutton, Jeanna Roberts, Chris Hobbs, and Sharen Burgess are several high school students who help in the office, also. They keep up with the absentees, run errands and help in any way they can. Keep up the good work! Right: Vivian Barker Left: Mary Sprayberry 13 Bus Drivers Lewis Watkins Kathy Rathburn Allen Jones Gail Watkins Fouke students really depend on the buses to transport them to and from school. And if it weren't for the bus drivers who drive the buses, there might be children who couldn’t make it to school. So many times we may have a tendency to take advantage of them. But they must sometimes carry up to one hundred students on a bus at a time. Right: Raymond Blackmon is a good mechanic to have around for keeping the buses in good working order. He too has been working for the school for 25 years. 14 The Ladies In Gold The cafeteria was remodeled this year with a new oven, steam and cook tables, fryer, mixer, and sink. This was the first time that it has been remodeled since its opening in 1951. The cafeteria is much like an old fashion country kitchen because our cooks are experts when it comes to good old homemade country cooking. Middle right: The lunch room workers are always on the go but here they find time to smile for the camera. Bottom left: Joann Nottingham adjusts Gloria Mayton’s new purple and gold apron and uniform. Bottom right: Hattie Jones is making their famous homemade rolls for the day's lunch. Our Work Crew They play a major part in the functioning of our school. Without them our school would fail to operate properly. Upper right: Here, as usual, Paul Attaway is forever working to keep our school clean. Center right: These after-school-students work under the CETA program, which is sponsored by the Federal Government, and they also contribute to the welfare of our school. I eft to right: Alan Holder. Marty Potts. Bud Franks, Dewayne Mitchell, David Sams, Lynn Roberts. Not pictured: Scott Chapman, Retha Williams. Lower left: Mr. Kenneth Chappell, also under the CETA program, helps rearrange the storeroom for the cafeteria workers. Lower right: Ricky Allen pitches in to get the day’s work done. 16 High School Precious And Few . . . are the moments we have spent. As the weeks turn to years, we look hack at the times we have had. The laughter and tears we have shared, the things we have learned as we have grown together. As our Senior year draws to a close and we face new responsibilities, and as we drive toward the future we can look hack to the years gone by and remember how precious and few those moments really were. There were many colorful happenings at Fouke School in the years of 1978 and 1979: Selling yearlxioks, winning rihlxms at the Four States Fair, beating the heart on “Beat Foreman Day”, Seniors ordering their invitations, and our great Panther Football players at a pep rally. It has been a colorful year. The Seniors of 79 will surely miss ! eing at Fouke next year. 19 A Mrs. Linda Green Mrs. Lois (i Kidson Mr. Curtis Mudford •leanna Kaye Roberts-Pres. Always striving to do their best, these students have been chosen as departmental representatives by the high school faculty. A combination of grades, interest, ability, attitude, cooperation, and grade level was used to make these selections. A new category, Best-All-Around, has been added this year. All faculty personnel were allowed to vote for a senior boy and girl who is an outstanding member of their class. This is quite an honor for a student to be voted for this position. He then went on to play college football at Henderson. But not only was Coach Ray involved in football, he played basketball and ran track in high school. In 1970 and 1971 he was state hurdles champion and was 4th in the state in the Decathalon. With this background it is obvious why he is such a great coach! MANAGER Ricky Jones Panthers Play to Win Way to go Panthers! On behalf of the entire student body, the annual staff would like to give each and everyone of you a pat on the back for doing such a good job this year. The victories that we had really gave a boost to the spirit of Fouke High School. We will miss each of the Senior Panthers who will be graduating this year. They are: Travis Avance, Reagan Jones, Jay Launius, Mike Medina, David Rathbum, and Johnnv Williams. Also best of luck to the Panthers of next year, and may they have even more victories in the years to come. J INTRAMURAL The same night the Independent and Coaches teams played, they had an intramural game between the 12th and 9th grade girls against the 11th and 10th grade girls who do not play basketball. Among the many projects the center has sponsored are judo and gymnastics. The iudo club has enjoyed more success and publicity than either of the two. Several have competed in national tournaments. Sue Peavy has been runner-up two years in a row, 1977-78, and Ruby Goodson took third place in 1977. Both Sue and Ruby were state champions in 1977. This year, 1979, Tracy Mayton and Byron Robertson will be eligible to represent FOUKE School in the NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Tournament. Valentine Favorites J? f' I % Everyone knows that February 14 is a day for “sweethearts” and the Valentine Senior Sweethearts for 1979 are Jay Launius and Kim Combs. They were elected by the student body of Fouke. The Paper Staff was in charge of the election and the money which was made (each vote was a nickel) went to their treasury. To be Valentine Sweethearts is a great honor. Congratulations Jay and Kim! 153 Don’t bother me, I know karate! How many of you want to hear LITTLE BROWN KOKO? Day to Day School Life Knock, Knock! Face which direction??? What kind of GAS mileage does it get? None of your business what I bring for lunch! What's in the Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! Thank goodness this yearbook is finished! Everyone needs a good sense of humor in order to exist in this mixed-up world. Often humor is the only thing that stands between us and the dark. At times it is difficult to see the comedy in a situation nj w mu tm uic ungui, siut; oi mt; ana ir happy “forever.” Lunch duty is the pits! Let's go to town. 156 The staff members who were the ring leaders of the yearbook were from left to right: Donna Tefteller and Jamey Attaway-Photographer managers; Leah Pilgreen-Assistant Editor; Angela Moore-Editor; Karen Jones-Darkroom manager, Barbara Smith-Business manager; Holly Tanton-Copy Editor. Annual Appreciation In putting together a yearbook, it not only takes the work of the staff, but there are other people who put forth alot of effort to make it a big success. Though it may be only a small way of showing our appreciation, we, the staff, want to take the opportunity to thank each and everyone of these people. So, here’s a BIG THANKS to: everyone who bought an ad. Without you, our yearbook would have been impossible. Danny and Patsy Bishop for the use of your beautiful home for our Who’s Who pictures. all of the staff members’ teachers. You were so patient and understanding. our Superintendent, Mr. Davis, and our Principal, Mr. Crockett, for your help and cooperation. Mrs. Vera Huff and Mrs. Lorene Mills for your help in getting the information we needed on Mr. Caswell and Mrs. Sprayberry for our dedicaton. all of the people who cooperated when you had your pictures taken. Especially those we had to retake and Mrs. Gloria Eaves who went with several of the staff members to a yearbook camp in Conway. You were an absolutely fantastic chaperone. Pictures play one of the most important parts in a yearbook. Several people besides the staff helped us in this area. We owe these people our appreciation, also. They are: Mr. Lloyd Sutton who took our beautiful color endsheet picture and helped in getting our darkroom organized. his daughter, Judy, and son, Terry, who took some of our pictures. Mr. Aubrey Enoch and Chris Hobbs who took several of our pictures. Brian Moore who took many of our football and basketball action shots. Once again, THANKS to each and everyone who helped. Your support and kindness will remain with us “Always and Forever.” The 1979 Panther Yearbook Staff 157 Autographs 158 159 161 162 163 164 ‘V'8'fl °K HldOMSTVM m - ‘• v at; , - v ■ x. • ,v Hv- A‘ 5i:r v rf V ill Av J U J fj _ 'V -JL_ 'VM o
