The Beginning of Fouke Commumty Many many years 'ago tn the Lone Star State of Texas located rn the North Eastern sectton of Wood County tall ptne trees grew out of pure xyhtte sandy sotl Thts vast area of forest attracted attentton from all sectrons of other states In the seventres the move began All tratls leadrng tn to Texas were crowded wtth famrhes maktng thetr may to the ptny woods of East Texas acqutrrng land erther by purchasmg or by homesteadmg The Hamrltons Wlntes Nashrngtons and the Jobe famtlres to the east The Btlly In esley Ben Wesley Holland Garrett Lacy and Grant famtltes to the west The Peter Thompson and Aaron Scott famtlres to the Nlorth West The Hall famrly to the lworth and the R1Cll3.Id Joe Wesley Haw kms and Walton tamrhes to the south There were a few other fannlres of uhtch no permanent re cord could be obtatned A one room log hutldrng was erected as general meettng place for these famrlres In the year 19011 the George W Fouke Lumber Co of Arkansas moved to th1s sectton about one fourth mtles southwest of th1s locatton brrngrng a large number of workmen and thetr famtltes The need for larger schools churches Lodge Halls and other ctvtc butldrngs became necessary Between 1907 1910 the frrst county school was erected Prof H M Johnson of Quttman as Prtnctpal Churches Lodge Halls and other butldtngs were burlt People worked and famtltes grew Other famtltes moved rn Interest for rmprovtng the communtty ltvtng was the one tmportant ques tron Land uasthen purchased by the patrons and the ftrst three room Rosenwald School was butlt Prof R H Johnson served as prtnctpal of th1s school Several more teachers were added In 1931 another classroom was added to the three room Rosenwald butldrng under the leadshrp of Prof W C Coleman Ttme moves on By the year 1946 two butldtngs had burned and had been rebutlt by the late prrnctpal R L Ptnkard Its 1950 The peak had been reached on our scholastrc roll Fouke School was loosrng chtldren credtts and teachers It was necessary for consoltdatton I95l the Hawktns Publtc School Dtstrect made tt posstble for all chtldren from thrs commumty to contrnue the1r educatron A stgned agree ment was gtven tl1e Fouke Commumty from the Hawktns School Board to leave the old Fouke School butldrng on the present stght to be used as a Commumty Center Page ll 0 o , - I Y . . .
