.S.S. F 1 Today, the Fighting FQSS is two years old, and it is withgreat pride that the Qfficers and Crew send their greetings to their many friends throughout the Allied Vvorid. ' The FOSS was named in honor of Ensign Rodney Shelton Foss who was killed in action during the Japanese attack at the United States Naval ,Air Station, Kaneohe Bay. Gahu, T. H., on Decemher 7, 1941. He was cited hy the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, for prompt and efficient action and utter disregard of personal danger in the effort to repel the attack on the Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, hy Japanese forces on Decemher 7, 1941, which was made in conjunction with the attack on the Fleet in Peari Harhor that date. Ensign Foss was horn on August 17, 1919, in Monticello, Arkansas. He enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve as Apprentice Seaman and served two months ahoard the USS. QUINCY on active training duty. He was appointed to Naval Reserve Midshipman School, Northwestern University, Chicago, HI., and was commissioned an Ensign on June 12, 1941. From there he reported to a Patrol Squadron in Kaneohe Bay. The FOSS was in command of Lieutenant Commander Juies J. Jordy at commissioning time, two years ago today. Un Decemher 6, 1945, the Executive Qfficer, Lieutenant Drayton N. Hamilton, relieved Lieutenant Commander Jordy as Commanding Officer. On November 2, 1944, the Commanding Officer was relieved hy Lt. Douglas S. Lamheth, Executive Qfficer, and the duties of Executive Officer assumed hy Lt. James M. Moore. The Fighting FOSS was active in convoy woric, escorting convoys to three continents and seeing during her two years, the decline and defeat of the U-hoat. We, the Officers and Men of the FGSS, pledge ourselves to the fullest devotion to duty according to the hest traditions of the Service and the Fleet.
