Valeclictory Alasl We have come fo a fork in fhe road. All guiding hands have abandoned us. Which way shall we furn? Our fhoughfs grope back info our high school years for a refuge from fhe fhreafening uncerfainfies fhaf confronf us: buf 'ro no avail. Time waifs for no man. Already 'rhe pasf is ouf of reach: fhe fufure is rushing upon us. A few sfeps backward will give us perspecfive. We are fhe firsf posf-war gradualing class. Unlike our predecessors who have hesifafed af fhis crossroads we are looking foward a peaceful iourney, unhindered by war. fear. or violence. Are we prepared fo meef fhe ordinary obsfacles of life? During our early high school years. when a large parf of fhe civilized world was being desfroyed by fhe weapons of war. we enjoyed fhe fruifs Masfen had fo offer us. Alfhough we were fully aware of fhe cafasfrophic conclifions of fhe world, our high school life was unsfinfed. Assembly programs. foofball games. class dances wenf on as usual: and fhoughfs of 'rhem will always be a happy reminder of our high school days. . Thomas Jefferson believed fhaf educafion is fhe mosf advanfageous fool for building democracy. The significance of fhis belief has been verified by fhe war fhrough which we have iusf passed. Those counfries fhaf are wonf fo provide liberal educafion for fheir people Took a sfand for democracy againsf ofhers fha? fend fo wifhhold from fheir children such educafion as opposes fheir docfrines of Naziism and Fascism. The arf of warfare alone was faughf fo fhese vicfims. who learned hafe as a parf of fhe war program. During fhe dark period of fhe recenf war, we enioyed fhe usual American liberal educafion. ln fhe world machinery fhaf is now being overhauled, we shall become gears equipped 'ro shiff ourselves info posifion fo make for humanify a democrafic. peaceful. happy world. For sfeering us so smoofhly Through fhese war-sfricken years, we are indebfed fo our principals and feachers. Af fimes when many of us, weary of fhe journey, were fempfed fo furn off fhe road. our educafional leaders resfrained us. They gave us 'rhe equipmenf fhaf we shall fake fhrough life. We besf can show our grafifude for fheir efforfs by forging a successful fufure for ourselves and for our fellowmen. The fime is geffing shorf. We musf leave our school and choose one of The roads of life. To say good-bye fo Fosdick-Masfen is difliculf, for she will always remain close 'ro us, in our hearfs. Lef us look 'lo fhe fufure wifh The courage and sfrengfh wifh which we have been inspired by our Alma Maferl JACOB LENZNER 28
