VALEDICTORY Today we do noT say good-bye To MasTen: insTead we bid auf wiedersehen. As we do so, Tor The TirsT Time in our lives many oT us realize The omnipoTence of The TuTure which looms before us. STill a reTrospecT is very a'propos, Tor This year Fosdick- Iv1asTen celebraTes iTs TorTieTh anniversary. Back in I898, .aT The Turn oT The cenTury, when The elecTriTying eTTecTs oT scienTiTic and mechanical progress were TirsT beginning To be TelT, IvIasTen's TirsT class asked iTselT The same quesTion ThaT we do Today- Where do we go Trom here? Since I898 noT only have beer iackeTs and jeep shoes replaced busTle and Celluloid collars, buT The world has also undergone a social and economic revoluTion. Because The old order changeTh, The members oT The class oT l938 Tind a new problem wiTh which To cope. The modern social and economic pace is seT aT a Tempo so TasT, ThaT unlike youTh oT pre-war days, we are allowed no inTerval Tor readiusTmenT To liTe. Were I a TaTaIisT or were I noT myselT a member oT This class l mighT be prone To bemoan our loT: buT since I have TaiTh-yes, perhaps because my youThTul idealism is yeT unshaTTered, I share wiTh my classmaTes only exalTaTion and high aspiraTion as we shooT our arrows inTo The air and wonder where They will land. No, Triends, This is noT opTimism-iT is confidence in ourselves and in The equipmenT wiTh which The pasT Tour years have endowed us. However, graduaTion does bring a close To The presenT. During The pasT years, many of us have been Snow WhiTes -ever singing I'm wishing : oThers of us have been I-Iappys, SIeepys, and Dopeys who have dispellecl worry and care wiTh an occasional Aw shucks! UnTorTunaTely, Prince Charming and lovely princesses belong To never, never land, and so I daresay ThaT many oT us in our new freedom will be buT poor, disillusioned Pinnochios. Somehow The Term new Treedom and The age, eighTeen, TogeTher Torm a magic poTion. Indeed, we do have a new Treedom, buT leT's compare ourselves To The TeensTers oT Iv1asTen's TirsT class. In I898 by Tar The large maioriTy oT eighTeen-year-olds were ouTside The ranks oT high school gradu- aTes who aT +ha+ Time were a privileged Tew. Now, The boy or girl wiThouT secondary Training is in The slender minoriTy. Moreover, in many Tields demands Tor college graduaTes have displaced Those Tor high school graduaTes. Many young swing adherenTs boasT of being up on every phase oT swing-yeT, mosT oT Them are unaware OT The swing movemenT which oscillaTes in only one direcTion-ThaT is Toward higher educaTion. A Tew oT us may be TorTunaTe enough To aTTain This goal in college, where Through Tuforial sysTems. specialized courses, and senior year apprenTiceships, The sTudenT Tinds himseIT in a liTe of which American educaTion has made him The saTelliTe. BuT, inTiniTe knowledge does noT conTirm iTselT To school walls: nighT schools, libraries. lecTures. and adulT educaTion classes all exTend a welcome which we cannoT disregard. Thomas JeTTerson once said, IT is noT more democracy buT more educaTion ThaT This counTry needs. Today, when democracy is like quicksilver, educaTion is The only insTrumenT which will keep our democraTic TeneTs Trom slipping away before our very eyes. From now on There will be no compulsory law reading- Thou musT educaTe ThyselT, buT as vibraTions Trom Russia, lTaly, and Germany re-echo in This counTry. They sTrike a noTe so ominous ThaT we need consulT no oracle To realize ThaT in The baTTle To uphold democracy, noT guns, shells, and poisonous gases buT educaTion, in The hands oT The masses, will be The mosT poTenT weapon. As ValedicTorian I should say good-bye To Fosdick-MasTen Park on behalT oT my cIassmaTes: and yeT, I Teel I cannoT, Tor IvIasTen To me is more Than a building or a school-iT is an idealism which like our memories of iT will never leave us. To Fosdick-lv1asTen Then, To iTs TaculTy, and To all The Triends we leave behind-The senior class only says- Till we meeT again, buT as we parT, we hold our heads high- Tor ours is The honor and privilege oT being Fosdick-IvIasTen Park graduaTes. Alice G. Chmiel A. I
