Eef.-1L.t mam IIHIIIIAIIII The young men and women from Fortuna Union High School have responded Whole-heartedly to their nation's call. We find them in all branches ot the service and in all parts of the World. The school is proud ot them and ot the service they are giving our country. In these times of stress they have shown a courage and a devotion to duty typical of all young Americans. We, therefore, dedicate the 1943 Megaphone to these former students Who, tor our great cause, have given so much, in some cases even their lives. -THE EDITOR. S 9 5 X E F F 3 1 E I Ei ! Absent-Viola letters, lack Stedman. Democratic student government, begun during the 1941-42 school year under the direction ot Mr. McKelvie and President Tony lbarreta, has been continued under the leadership of President Eugene Miller with Mr. Stenback as adviser. Representatives from each advisory have served their groups etiectively in carrying on the activities ot the student body. A curtailment of activities, due to War restrictions, has made the Work of the Advisory Board more difficult. An attempt has been made to supplement the usual activities by assisting in the many War activities, including salvage campaigns, the pur- chasing ot War Bonds and Stamps, and Iunior Red Cross activities. The Advisory Board is now accepted as a necessary and essential group in the conduct of student and administrative problems of our high school. 2 E 2 a H S E i l A S - ---- -V-Q V S I S NAVY DALTON WINQBIGLER I' I F President ..,.. At the beginning of the year the club was given a good start by the initiation of all new members. Our officers carried our meetings and programs through nearly perfectly. The persuader, introduced into the club for the first time this year, has kept the committees functioning Very nicely and the officers keeping up with their duties. We pay tribute to the successful year of '42-'43 and to our officers and members Who have raised the already high standards of our club. ,AN I RRR ,,,,.,.,-M F1I'SlROW Wagner A Hansen Hepwortlfi Wood Piilv COX Second Row Gareeloi F Curry Tl :ss V. The Future Farmers oi America is a National Organization begun in l928. The local chapter was organized in l929 and has an enviable record as one oi the most outstanding depart- ments in the United States. This past year one of our members, loe Giacomini, has served as Second National Vice President of the National Asso- ciation. This is probably the highest honor ever conferred on any member of the Fortuna l-ligh School. This serves as one example of the many honors won by the local chapter. During the past year the local chapter has taken a leading part in the National Salvage Campaign, has undertaken the operation of a twenty cow dairy, has helped conduct a County labor survey, has increased food production, has had a State Farmer, Ed Giacomini, and done many other outstanding things. The organization is built upon leadership and character development, sportsmanship, cooperation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizen- MERLYN LANGDON ship and patriotism. President The local chapter always has and will continue to do its best to contribute to the agriculture oi this country. Chapter mem- bers are enlarging projects and helping to augment the tre- mendous production necessary for meeting the present national crisis. lllllllll FARMERS It A Although a ruling of the Board of Trustees abolished music as a regularly organized subject, this ruling did not abolish student interest in and enthusiasm for music. This was demonstrated throughout the 1942-1943 school year when forty students of the Fortuna Union High School organized a High School Band as an extra curricular activity under student direction. Without benefit of fac- ulty assistance or guidance, these students upheld the traditions of the school and maintained keen interest in music activities, thus proving that this subject is vital in the lives of young people. The student band played at basketball games, assemblies, and other public functions. Especially noteworthy was a half hour program presented before the Fortuna Rotary Club. lt is the sincere hope of every member of the band as well as every member of the Student Body that the high school trustees will reconsider their action and reinstate music under the direction of a qualified instructor for the next school year. The students of this school have complete confidence in the judgement of our trustees and know that they will not fail us, especially when it is fully realized just how much music contributes to the lives of young people. F. discontinued because of the war, our teams had to play outside teams which included those from the Recreation League of Eureka and the Coast Guard. Vile had two very fast teams this year with the heavyweights getting several players from last year's lightweight team. Graduation will prove costly to our next year's teams, but there will be a number of good underclass men coming up. Because active military service faces nearly every one of our boys in coming years, a strenuous toughening-up course, designed by the state, is being given to all gym classes.
