Art Offers Variety The Lower School Art Program encourag- ed the students in many aspects of art. They worked with weaving, printmaking, drawing, painting, and batiking. The third graders worked with hand puppets while the fifth graders concentrated on Indian designs. All grades created murals portray- ing towns, villages, transportation, stores, and highways to which each student con- tributed something. The Middle Schoolers worked with weaving, cartooning, clay and had the same program as the Lower School, but on a different basis. The Upper Schoolers, on the other hand, had three sections to their program. The General Art class got a taste of everything, as the Lower'School and Middle Schoolers did. Students could also take independent study such as paper- making. Specialized classes were offered each term in which students could take basketry, ceramics, or painting. The Art Honor Society made special ef- forts and arranged to have several artist's in residence such as Blue Corn, a noted In- dian potter, who taught all levels of students about Indian Pottery as well as their culture. Other artists in residence in- cluded, Brooke Alexander who explained papermaking techniques to the students and Barbara Goldstein who explained and demonstrated watercolor techniques. -- l Blue Corn and her daughter demonstrate their style of making pottery.
