Qymfet Htteaventy Friendshipu President E. Rumsevtr God has atways heen in search of men whom He coutd admit into the inner circte ot His friendship-men to whom He coutd make known His heaventy ptans and purposes. Xve read in the twenty-tiitth Psatm: mtihe secret ot the Lord is with them that tear him: and He witt shew them his covenantf' :Enoch watked with God, and the Lord totd him ot things that woumd happen on earth mitteniums after he had gone to heaven. Ahraham is catted Hthe friend ot Gocf' Jesus said ot him: HAhraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it and was gtadf, Xvhat a vision ot Gods wondertut satvationt mt-he Lord spake unto txftoses face to iqace, as a man speaketh unto his friend., and 'tHe made known his ways unto Wtosesf' As a friend God totd him ahout His ptans and how He was going to carry them out. These things were not reveated to the peopte to whom Vtoses ministered. To them God coutd show Himsett onty through His Nactsf' They were not in the inner circte. Jesus said to His disciptes: Mt have cated you friends: tor att things that I have heard ot my Father I have made known unto youf' Through the humanity and sutnstitutionary death ot our adorahte and ever htessed Lord Jesus Christ, God has opened His Father aeart tutty to us, in that He has opened the way for att to enter into that friendship ot friendships. However, two things are ahsotutety necessary in order to quatity for en- trance into this heaventy friendship. First is taithtut ohedience. Vxfe Find this mark in everyone who has entered into the inner circte with the Lord. tn Hehrews ll we read: 'By faith Ahraham, when he was catted to go out into a ptace which he should after receive tor an inheritance, oheyedf' Jesus said, and stitt says, Ye are my friends, it ye do whatsoever I command youf, This means ohedience to the whole reveated wilt ot God. Perfect dependahitity is the second quatitication that is in evidence. The Lord said ot Abraham: ,For I know him, that he Witt command his children, and his househotd atter him. that they shalt keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and iudgmentgw in other words, Ut can depend on him. ' 1. HHe Witt not disctose anything that is to he kept hetween him and tVte.H The friends ot' God are true to every trust He commits to them. 2. 'tHe Witt receive rehuke from Wie in the right spirit whenever I shatt Find it necessary to administer it to himfy The Lord did this severat times in Ahrahamys experience. 3. Ht-te Witt he true of Me, even when suhjected to the severest testf, Stop and think here ot Gods catt to him to ottqer up his son Isaac. ' This friendship is Costly. But the price is nothing compared with the tut- ness ot htessing and the unspeakahte gtory that He gives in return. May God het p us to qualify. Here it is that we meet for a season of quietness hetore Him for a half day ot prayer once each month. It is very necessary that we have this period of prayer. So oft, hecause of the duties of our studies, we neglect to spend time with Him, who spent whole nights in prayer. Here it is that as the poet has said, hxve come with our hurden and care. So on this day, especially, He speaks to us words of comfort and gives us new hiessings, strength, and courage to go on with Him. Not only do we spend much of this time in prayer, hut we meditate on a portion of Gods XVord, the Christians measuring rod. The chastenings the Lord gives us are not always pleasant. hlany times we must confess our faults hefore each other, for it is only when there is nothing hetween our souls and the Saviour that joy and happiness await us. It is then that we receive the 'showers of hiessingsq for which we have prayed. S. G. THE HOUR OF PRAYER The quiet hour is the period given in the early morning for our com- munion with the Lord Jesus. Xxfith David each student cries, Uivly voice shalt thou hear in the morning, U Lordg in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and win took upf, Then, too, at this time we will listen to the voice of God speaking to us through His Xvord. hlore courage, greater faith, and renewed strength leap up in our heartsg and throughout the entire day we realize that we are not alone for God is with us. Then after the evening meat, another quiet time is ohserved. Sometimes a visiting friend says a few wordsg other times we students testify to the Lordys hlessing in our tives. These devotions are usually closed with prayer. Xve praise God for the privilege of knowing Christ and His Xvord. M. E. K.
