The Fabulous Viking Banczff Seeking an even higher level of ex- cellence, the Viking bands inspired pride throughout the school and earned respect throughout the na- tion. The Pride of Fort Walton was invited as an exhibition band at the Tri-State Music Festival in Okla- homa, and closer to home collected a stack of superior trophies at district, regional and nation- ally-sponsored marching contests. Most meaningful to students, however, was the spirit of the band, the emotion it produced-drawing applause with driving tunes like Free and making crowds rise up with their most re- quested number, a stirring medley, Dixie!Battle Hymn of the Republic. Dividing later into the concert and sym- phonic bands did not lessen the quality of music any, as both groups earned the highest ratings in contests throughout the South under the direction of Mr. Er- nest Hebson and Mr. William Creekmore. The Year of the Vi- king proved Fort Walton Beach High School outstanding in every category, in- cluding bands which were among the most noted organizations anywhere in all the Southeast. 66!Bands fn-f-'H Debby Miles follows a Viking triumph intently. Drum Major lim Livingston leads a pre-triumph parade through the halls on Victory Over Choctaw Day.

M azjoreflef Play With Fire Twirling flaming ba- tons and flashing swords were two of a great variety of rou- tines that the Viking majorettes sparkled half-time shows with in 1973. Captained by the Miss Florida All- Star for 1973, Kathy Levitt, the squad con- sisted of another All- Star Band member, Melissa Scroggins, as well as Cheryl Smith, Lisa McLendon and Kim Brackin. The four juniors and one sophomore continued the winning tradition of the corps, begin- ning with two first place trophies won in Tuscaloosa. Trophies for superior perfor- mances at the Miracle Strip and the Culf Coast Marching con- tests were added dur- ing the school year. 68!Majorettes Radiant Kathy Levitt reflects a beautiful performance in her face. Quiet is observed by Cheryl Smith during the National Anthem. Rhythm, skill, and grace born of devoted practice result in prize- winning performances by Kim Bracken and the other maj- orettes. gf: l -qt 43, va W ,V e 1 5 ' Na ' .xv
