.1 It 1 'tif '71 bd Q . A Touch qf Slmkeijbemfe The English Department was the only place in school that you could read monster sto- ries and get away with it. Beo- wulf and the Iabberwocky were as important in literature classes as Longfellow or Sandburg. But most important of all were the students. New classes and old courses that were rewrit- ten during the summer offered something for almost any need or interest. Students in Hu- manities studied burial cus- toms of ancient man, drama students analyzed Oedipus Rex, and grammar students tried to reform their old habits. Old stand-bys such as short-stories, word themes, and story analysisg f You know there has got to be sym- bolism in this story. Why else would they make us read it? l still held a place in the English department. The courses en- couraged the students to think, express their thoughts, and share them. 1 Ms. Branch lends a dubious ear to Tom Sibert. An Elizabethan theatre illustrates the diffi- culties in staging a Shakespearean drama. Time to relax and share ideas was a major part ofthe English Department. English!53

Industrial Art students must have the patience to labori- ously work on a project until completion. They often come up with splinters in their fin- gers, broken fingernails tYes, there are women in industrial arts toolj, and cuts, but at that moment of completion, it all seems worth it. With the addition of an air ex- haust system which was added to the paint spray room, plus heat lamps, students have been able to breathe easier, knowing they are getting more paint on an object than in themselves! K., 4 E An auto mechanics student contemplates the day's work. Woodwork students admire the products of their assembly line. Busy but organized workers enjoy individual shop activity.
