Teaching a student to develop an understanding of the English language to study different types of writing and to encourage those interested in drama is the purpose of the English department A student studies the different parts of speech learns to apply them and also gets some practical experience in writing Students taking the one semester course of Driver Training learn the essential parts of the car handle a car andthe various rules of driving They receive their training in a car loaned to the school for this purpose In the social studies classes one may not only choose those which pertain to World and United States History but Contemporary World Problems Psychology and Social Studies Contemporary World Problems deals with events of malor impor tance in our modern world whereas in Psychology the students study the behavior of individuals Offered In the art department of our school are varied courses rangmg from ceramics to com mercial art These give students the chance to express their feelings to carry out original ideas to make useful oblects and to help the school by working on murals decorating for dances and painting posters In the printing classes of graphic arts and ad- vanced printing the students not only learn these skills but aid their school by making programs, printing the school paper and other useful items. These classes are valuable to the school curriculum for they help the students interested in this field as a career. NUMEROUS DEPARTMENTS ASSIST STUDENTS

IN LEARNING SKILLS DEVELCDPING TALENTS 1432 In learning the tongue of a country a brIef hlstory of that country IS taught In the four dIffer ent foreugn languages classes German Spanish French and LatIn The students acquIre an ade quate vocabulary and after Iearmng correct con structlon of sentences they are glven the chance to apply theIr skIIl Nearlv all of the Student Body has at one tIme been assocIated wIth one of our school music groups They Include the Instrumental and vocal groups and also a course In muslc theory offered for the last semester These groups brnng honor to our school by performmg throughout our cIty and state Boys Interested In the mechanIcs of cars, or In makIng thIs theIr VOCGIIOH fInd themselves rIght at home In the auto mechanIcs course taught at the Vocational BuIldIng These boys devote theIr entIre afternoon to overhauling engines finding out how they work making repairs and putting them together again. Included in the training of young women inter- ested in homemaking, is the instruction of inter- ested young men in the essentials of sewing and cooking. The girls also study good grooming, tex- tiles, and the arrangement and care of furniture. In the spring, they display the garments they have made in the annual style show. Learning the skills of the mathematic courses offered in school, varying from general courses to a study of the higher' mathematics, a student can apply them not only in things that need this experience, but in solving every day problems.
