Glacier water, ice cold and frothing fumbles over the boulder strewn bed of a mountain spring. Meeting other forks and tributaries each stream plunges as it descends, until at last all merge into the Columbia . . the greatest power river in America. Home of the king salmon is the river, spawning grounds, graveyard for the ever mysterious cycle. Rolling on foward the sun, the river thunders and foams grinding out rapids and chasms. Then spreads out making peace with its banks as it flows to the ocean, in peaceful homage. ,X 1 THE gi .117 FORT ER HIGH scdffoo VA OUVER,WASHING'IiON i VOLUME II K., ,MY , X fu., N X Mx NX mg ,af y , Wfl g , f Q QQ Vi. pa' , nflwdu,cfI.01'L . We, the Alki Staff of 1957, hereby dedicate this Alki to Miss Dorothea von Berg, Assistant Principal at Fort Vancouver High School, in recogni- tion of her many years of service to the student body. She has given students her active cooperation during her many years of teaching and counseling, so it is not surprising that she is well liked among the student body. Born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Miss von Berg attended the University of Oregon where she received her B.A. degree. As an English teacher she started her career at Vancouver High School, later attending Columbia University where she earned her M.A. degree, ln l934 she became Dean of Girls and adviser of the Girls' League. Two years ago when the school became Fort Vancouver High School she was given a new title, Assistant Principal, and became the counselor for the class of '58, Throughout her many years of work with the school and an active participation in civic affairs, Miss von Berg has earned the highest reputa- tion for her dependability, industry, fairness, understanding, and un- questioned integrity. We recognize and appreciate her tireless efforts and enthusiastic interests. E' .muy about rivers and tite as mind that For centuries, poets have been writing anotagous to each other. Avid SEASON'S RECORD FOOTBALL Competing in the newly organized SWW League, the l956 Trapper Football Team compiled an admirable record with seven wins and three losses. Thirty players and three managers earned a varsity letter during their triumphant season. Fort Vancouver finished second place in the SWW League and in nineteenth place in the All-State Press Polling. Displaying an exceptionally heavy line and a very fast backfield, the Trappers won the annual Homecoming game against Longview 25-l9. Breaks in the Camas-Fort Vancouver game led to all three touchdowns as the Trappers defeated the Papermakers l3-6. Getting practice for next year, the Juniors rallied over Woodrow Wilson by downing the Portlanders 44-6. Named by the coaches to the local All-Conference first team were: Gordon Upkes, Chuck Chronis, Gary Newman, and Danny Russell. Mike Collins was on the second team. Gordon Upkes received a higher honor by being singled out for the All-State team with Chuck Chronis an alter- nate. Danny Russell was chosen the Outstanding Player, Gary Newman team captain, and Chuck Chronis inspirational player. sour:-lwesr LEAGUE FOOTBALL :.V.H.S.. . . . . 6 Gresham ..... 29 STANDINGS F.V.H.S. ...... l3 Battleground . . 6 F.V.H.S. ...... 25 Longview ..... GIRLS TENNIS TEAM G.A.A. With a diminished, but increasingly active G.A.A. of approxi- mately 215 members, the largest organization in the school is engaged in one of its most successful years. Miss Dora Hauck, assisted by a staff of interested students, has ably conducted a pro- gram of seasonal sports such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, softball, and bowling. This year the girls have enioyed various playdays with other schools in the area. The coming of spring brings the annual walking and bicycle hikes in which the girls parti- cipate. Intramural activities such as these enable a girl to win a letter, based on 60 activities and 40 social points. She is then given membership in the Lettergirls' Club, which, working under student officers has a planned monthly activity. By far the largest single proiect handled by the G.A.A. is the sponsorship of the annual Homecoming Dance, held during football season. Shower of Stars , this year's dance, proved to be one of the most popular dances of the season. Other activities included the selling of programs and pom-poms, attending out-of-town confer- ences and playdays, and holding a Christmas party.
