Leon J. Stan Lomax, one of the most dedicated and knowledge- able coaches in the profession, is stepping down as Head Football Coach at Fort Valley State College. Lomax took over the Wildcat team in 1963 after a successful 15 year tenure at Brunswick, Georgia's Risley High School. During his four- teen years as Head Coach, he led the team to five Southern Inter- collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Lomax is regarded as one of the top twenty coaches in the nation in small college football. A man of unique talents, he compiled an envious career record of 86-32-7. A vigorous worker and an advocate of funda- mentals, Stan Lomax worked closely with his players, individually and as a club, on and off the field. In 1971, he served as a member of the coaching staff in the Black All-Star Classic in the Houston Astro- dome in Houston, Texas. He was selected, in 1976, to coach the East Team in the first Annual All-American Freedom Football Classic in Los Angeles, California. Among other notables, he was selected as a finalist for the Georgia Hall of Fame, 1973, received the Pop Warner Award for the Huddle Prayer of the Year in 1971 and was recog- nized by the 1007 Wrong Club as Coach of the Year in 1969, 1972, 1975 and 1976. Lomax resigns as the dean of all football coaches in the State of Georgia, and possesses the top winning percent and long- est period of continuous coaching service of any other football coach. He has received many credits as leader of the Wildcat squad, a per- ennial football power. In 1975, the Wildcats, who held a 6-0-2 record, were selected to play in the post season NAIA Play-Offs in Ithaca, New York against Ithaca College. In 1972, they were the first squad from a predominantly Black college to be featured on a regionally telecast ABC-TV Sports Network. That same year, a banner one for Lomax and the Wildcats, they averaged more than 50 points per game, which kept them in the number one position in the nation among pre- dominantly Black colleges for several weeks and led them to play in the Amos Alonzo Stag Bowl, Phenix City, Al. Lomax grew up in Atlanta where he received his elementary and secondary education. He is a 1943 graduate of Fort Valley State Col- lege and a World War II Veteran. Lomax earned the Ed.M. degree at Boston University. He will continue to serve the college as Assistant to the President, a duty he has performed in addition to coaching for the past four years.
