FORT STOCKTON CHAMBER COMMERCE This is Fort Stockton, Texas: Gateway to the Big Bend Country. Of course, we have much pride in this town for we will inherit and manage it in a few years. We are proud of the growing city of Fort Stockton. We are proud of the new sulfur plants, the booming oil wells, and the new schools and homes. We look around us and see that we are the future citizens of this town. We know that there are things to be done and we feel confident that we can do them. We have been called everything from the hippie generation to a group of reckless, wild juvenile delinquents. But we choose to reject these views, for we know that we are the generation of progress. We love this town. It is our town, and we want the best for it. We want it to grow, and we are willing to make it grow. This is the voice of the Spirit of '68 generation. It is time our voice was heard and understood. 7

Today, in this age of anxiety, bomb shelters, and wars, there are many accelerated classes, and a much greater sense of challenge. Therefore, a student not only needs a good high school average, but high scores on various tests which most colleges require, and various creative abilities. It is no longer possible to do just what one wants to do nor to live on the reputation of the reputation that he might have made. Today, one must be able and willing to take orders from others. If he refuses, then he will never be workable or happy in the present day society. This is just the way we have to live in our modern times. Over a period of three years, we, the students of FSHS, become a part of certain groups and sections. We pick our friends with respect for one another's ideas. Some of our friendships are shallow and will last only until we have graduated, while others are long, lasting companionships which will last for a lifetime. Many things are experienced together. Deep feelings and seemingly important problems are revealed to a chosen few, while there are those whom we can really trust, and through crises, those who will always be there. We find a few, who, no matter what, will always be standing there, waiting to do any small thing to help. We have our trivial moments as well as our deep moments. We enjoy one another's company in our silly and wild experiences when we make the drag several hundred times or see who can drink the most Cokes at the Dairy Mart. We see each class working for recognition in the intramurals and each class trying to out yell the rest in the class victory yell in the pep rallies. As academic classes, we elect our own officers and class favorites, and compete, good-naturedly, against one another. These are our classmates who emphasize the Spirit of '68.
