vWil C FORT STOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL FORT STOCKTON, TEXAS VOLUME XXX Published by The Annual Staff THE SPIRIT. . . There's something in the air at Fort Stockton High School. It is something one can't take a picture of, nor describe. It is something that has only happened In the school year of 1967 and 1968. It is something most people call the Spirit of '68. This thing called Spirit is the feeling of pride in a school that is in no other school. This pride is in the people who walk the halls of FSHS. This Spirit is a feeling that only we, the students at FSHS get when we hear the school song, or a joy we feel when we know our school's done well. At a pep rally we experience this feeling when the voices swell so loud that we fear the rafters will fall. This great feeling is knowing we belong to something that is good. An example of this feeling was expressed when our new pep squad was formed and so many of us rushed to sign up to become a member of it so that we could raise the spirit of our school even more. The picture at the left, the Pep Squad demonstrates this spirit. The Spirit is not only reflected through the school as a whole, but it is shown in the faces of each individual whose achievements are high. This annual can’t record the feeling, nor can it really show this Spirit through these pictures. It can only record incidents of an activity and things of an academic nature through pictures. No one can grasp this Spirited feeling but the '68 Panthers of Fort Stockton High School themselves. . . . OF ’68 3 THE SPIRIT OF ’68 IS REFLECTED IN OUR. . . Honors 11 Activities 31 Athletics 71 Classes 99 Academics 153 Advertising 173 This is Fort Stockton, a Town Filled With Much Pride and Spirit FORT STOCKTON CHAMBER COMMERCE This is Fort Stockton, Texas: Gateway to the Big Bend Country. Of course, we have much pride in this town for we will inherit and manage it in a few years. We are proud of the growing city of Fort Stockton. We are proud of the new sulfur plants, the booming oil wells, and the new schools and homes. We look around us and see that we are the future citizens of this town. We know that there are things to be done and we feel confident that we can do them. We have been called everything from the hippie generation to a group of reckless, wild juvenile delinquents. But we choose to reject these views, for we know that we are the generation of progress. We love this town. It is our town, and we want the best for it. We want it to grow, and we are willing to make it grow. This is the voice of the Spirit of '68 generation. It is time our voice was heard and understood. 7 Today, in this age of anxiety, bomb shelters, and wars, there are many accelerated classes, and a much greater sense of challenge. Therefore, a student not only needs a good high school average, but high scores on various tests which most colleges require, and various creative abilities. It is no longer possible to do just what one wants to do nor to live on the reputation of the reputation that he might have made. Today, one must be able and willing to take orders from others. If he refuses, then he will never be workable or happy in the present day society. This is just the way we have to live in our modern times. Over a period of three years, we, the students of FSHS, become a part of certain groups and sections. We pick our friends with respect for one another's ideas. Some of our friendships are shallow and will last only until we have graduated, while others are long, lasting companionships which will last for a lifetime. Many things are experienced together. Deep feelings and seemingly important problems are revealed to a chosen few, while there are those whom we can really trust, and through crises, those who will always be there. We find a few, who, no matter what, will always be standing there, waiting to do any small thing to help. We have our trivial moments as well as our deep moments. We enjoy one another's company in our silly and wild experiences when we make the drag several hundred times or see who can drink the most Cokes at the Dairy Mart. We see each class working for recognition in the intramurals and each class trying to out yell the rest in the class victory yell in the pep rallies. As academic classes, we elect our own officers and class favorites, and compete, good-naturedly, against one another. These are our classmates who emphasize the Spirit of '68. Sports, Classes and Activities Reveal Panthers 8 The Spirit of FSHS is reflected day after day through our numerous activities. There are scores of things to do here at FSHS. There are pep rallies, various sports activities, dances, numerous club activities, and every now and then an election or contest of some sort. We show much enthusiasm in our activities. We let ourselves go and enjoy the excitement of a game or feel the tense emotion of a contest. Often, the participation in an activity will determine our futures. The participation in an activity can lead to a hobby and then grow into a lifetime project. These activities here at FSHS do not just “keep us busy nor are they just a means of keeping us off the streets, but they offer a constructive program. They are offered to us to help us help ourselves. We reflect our Spirit by our participation in these activities, although our spirit is most evident in our athletics. It is here that almost all the school spirit we have reveals itself, vocally and emotionally. At a football game, the stadium shakes with, We want a touchdown! “ At a basketball game, the cry is, Sink it, Panthers, sink it! And at the pep rallies the gym is virtually shaken with Go! Fight! Win! The Panthers have great spirit and we lose just as well as we win. Our teams' sense of sportsmanship and values, despite the odds, is something all Panthers are proud of. There is a sense of desire and rivalry that is quite obvious in all the Panther teams, and as far as desire to win along with good sportsmanship is concerned, no Panther team has ever lost. 9 FORT STOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL Alma Mater Live For Dear Old Stockton Fight For Her Colors True Floating High Above Us We will promise white and blue to reverence and honor you Loyal and together We our best must do Live for dear old Stockton She lives for you One of FSHS's National Honor Society Members, Doris Kellner, presents the valedictorian address for the graduating class of 1968. The Reward Is Pride .vii r, vt; 1+ U ■ The definition of an annual is a pictorial record of a years accomplishments and events. It may sound simple, but the staff for the 1968 Panther annual started work early in September in order for this definition to be realized. Representatives for Newsfoto Publishing Company presented programs on layout, design, and copy as helps to the staff. The work actually began. In order to promote sales of the Panther, the annual pep rally was presented to the student body and the annual was dedicated to the Sophomore class because of their high, school spirit. We as freshmen had several duties which we had to complete during the year. One of our most pleasurable tasks was decorating for the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Also, we were the lucky souls who had the privilege of raising the FSHS flags each morning. We also were the ones who suffered through many hard nights, guarding the most spectacular bonfire FSHS has seen in a long time. Now that graduation is here, you’ll be faced with important decisions. You’ll decide on continuing your education. You’ll choose a profession, a direction in life. And while you’re planning for your future, so are we. You’ll require more electricity in your home and in your work, as will our many other customers in this growing area. We’ro planning and building ahead so electricity will continue to serve you faithfully at the flip of a switch. Congratulations, and good luck for the future.
