I This is the last year that high school students will go to school in this building which faces on Second Street. Therefore, this annual is your personal memory book which I hope will help you remember every nook and cranny of dear ole F. S. H. S. Next year each of us will be creating new memories--some in college, some in the recently built high school. But we hope the busy, happy, formative years of high school may always live vividly for you in the pages of this book. Remember, as each one of you goes out into the world: New friends are silver; old friends gold. Editor. . .Tori Tracy Business Manager. . . Mary Margaret Baker Sponsor. . . Huekaby - Superintendent Mrs. Linda Falkner-Secretary Mr. Huckaby, as superintendent of the Fort Stockton Independent School District, served as the chief executive officer of the Board of Trustees and as the administrative head of all divisions and departments of the school system. As such, he assumes the responsibility for the development and maintenance of a positive education program designed to meet the needs of the community; recommends policies on organizations, finance, instruction, school plant, and other functions of the school program. He also recommends the number and types of positions required to provide proper personnel for the operation of the school program; and nominates for appointment, assigns, and defines the duties of all personnel with the assistance of other administrators. Mr. Huckaby spends his time endeavoring to build a well-rounded educational program for the youth of Fort Stockton. Mr. Ken McAllister - Principal Mrs. Jean Faulkenberry Mr. McAllister, as principal of the Fort Stockton High School, has the responsibility for maintaining proper staff relations. As such, he assumes the responsibility for interviewing applicants for high school positions and consults with the superintendent on the qualifications of the instructional personnel under consideration for appointment; maintains programs for supervision and inservice training of teachers for the purpose of improving the instruction in his school; maintains pupil welfare, desirable school-pupil and school-community relationships; coordinates the activities of his school with the activities of the other schools in the system, and promotes among his staff a better understanding of the problems and policies of the school system. His duties range from confidant adviser to referee and M. C. on the High School Bowl-all of which he does with equal grace and enthusiasm. Dear old golden rule days.....” How familiar those words are to us, But what is a school without its faculty; what are students without their teachers? The Fort Stockton High School faculty is one we should be very proud of. They not only spend five hours a day trying to pound knowledge into our heads, but also spend many evenings grading papers, chaperoning bus trips or sponsoring extra-curricular activities. This goes on for nine months, and during the summer those who are fortunate enough to obtain fellowships attend school, while the others endeavor to increase their teaching ability on their own. As the years pass, we, the students, will realize how deeply indebted we are to those who have spent their lives endeavoring to help make the world a better place in which to live by producing young people who will be able to take the place of today's leaders. Of course, we had our light moments, lording over the underclassmen. Receiving our rings and sending invitations added the touch of Seniorism. Senior Day at Prude Dude was a great reward for our twelve years of school--a day of letting our hair down. On Civic Day we were given the chance to show our ability to lead by taking over the duties of the city. Toward the end of the year, we felt a touch of nostalgia. Graduation night was full of joy mixed with bitter sweet sadness, as we ended the last moments as members of F. S. H. We not only gained many special privileges, but also attained a position of respect and responsibility in the school. One of our special privileges was that of promoting the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet. With bowed heads and belligerent attitudes, we served the almighty seniors food and felicity applenty, as a gesture of our eagerness to see them surrender their seniority. But our junior year was not all fun and frolic. With college or a vocation in the immediate future, it was necessary for us to begin taking tests, so that we might better ascertain our aptitudes and qualifications. The self-understanding acquired from these tests has enabled us to look forward to the future with faith, hope, and confidence. In conclusion, it might be said that we, as juniors, acquired the maturity necessary to accept the leadership of Fort Stockton High School. ‘•Junior Javorites Muddy Cuce Zoe Ann Griffith Carroll McFadden Jerry McGuairt Class Of ’63 41 Barbara McKenzie Ann Newton Frank Nieto Ernestina Pina Mary Porter Class of ’63 Chuck Oswalt Penny Owen Ida Pena Sam Pfiester Olga Sanchez Steve Schroeder Armando Rodriquez Anne Salisbury Jackie Shugart Margaret Sleeper Class Of ’63 Elodia Sosa Melvin Strong Jayne Tittle Jimmy Urias Lydia Urias Oli Urias Donna Caudle Adelaida Velasquez Emma Velasquez 46 Gaye Vickrey Joe Ben Walker Wiley Ward Pat Whitworth Dub Whittenburg Mike Williams Class Polly Sue Wilson Stan Ten Eych Jackie Carpenter 47 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Fred Harral, Sponsor; Sandy Bartlett, President; Chip Oswalt, Vice-President; Dorothy Almond, Secretary; Max Hall, Sponsor Class Of ’64 At first glance there seems to be no reason for the sophomore year; however, there must be something useful about this year or it wouldn't be in the curriculum. Actually, the sophomore year, as we sophomores have finally realized, has a very special purpose. It gives us a time for adjustment- - a breather in the course of our busy high school years. It could be compared to the cocoon stage in the life of a butterfly. We sophomores and the cocoon are in a dormant stage. Both student and cocoon are waiting, preparing for a time of glory. The cocoon will emerge as a beautiful butterfly, and we sophomores will at long last become upperclassmen. 48 Sophomore Samites $udy Sranks Zerr Cunningham 49 Eddie Allen Daniel Almodova Dorothy Almond Sandy Bartlett Tommy Bastian Preston Bell Richard Berry Rod Blaydes Jim Brown Lana Brown Jan Buenger Arnulfo Bueno Shelia Burleson 50 Jimmie Castor Anita Chavarria Connie Chavarria Greg Chavarria Eddie Cope Robert Cordero Terry Cunningham Nancy Danielson Charles Crownover Jimmy Davis Frances Dutchover Mary Dutchover Don Fletcher Gaylord Flood Judy Franks Pete Garcia Class Of Jesse Garza Eva Gonzales Maria Gonzales Senaida S. Naturally, we resented some of the rules and restrictions: going in the back door; putting up and taking down the flag; and singing the school song, because of senior whims. The annual homecoming bonfire was built by none other than the Fish. Speaking of fish--there was another pleasant job concocted for us by the Student Council--cleaning the fish ponds. We also presented an assembly in which most of the class members participated. However, our most pleasurable task was preparing for the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Our efforts were amply rewarded, because the upperclassmen enjoyed themselves. We found that the Freshmen year was one to remember, but now we look forward to being Sophomores when there will be a new class of lowly Freshmen. 58 freshmen favorites Rickard Snoddy Parker 59 Amada Acosta Joe Acosta Pablo Acosta Eddie Allen Gary Allen Sabastina Alonzo Joe Alvarez Jerry Anderson Socorro Arcides David Atkinson Anne Baker Carol Banda Mary Bean Dale Bounds Melinda Burgess Brenda Butz Carol Call Amada Carrasco Linda Carrasco Dolores Chavarria Ben Chavez Earline Church Bert Claver Class Wanda Cole Howard Colson Cynthia Conner David Cooke Cherry Crownover Cleone Crump Jimmy Davenport Carolyn Davis Sharon Davis Pecos DeMoville Of Suzi Eason Adan Escareno Johnny Fabela Raymond Franco Marilyn Fugate George Gallemore Tommy Galloway Virginia Garcia Donna Garvin Terry Gilley Philip Glenn Mike Goff Elodia Gonzales Enriqueta Gonzales Grace Gonzales Joe Henry Gonzales Oscar Gonzalez Sammy Green Diana Hall Guy Hall Currie Hallford Larry Kness Beverly Lancaster Donald Lannom Johnny Lannom Manuel Levario Linda K. Science Club SENIOR DIVISION WINNERS: Chuck Oswalt, Mike Hardy, Tommy Bastian, Tony Franco 138 This year the Fort Stockton High School Science Club took Radiation Fallout Hazards as its field of study. We realized that fallout presents a greater mental threat than a physical threat. Thus we tried to discover the fact and fiction about radiation fallout. Some members worked with the county and city officials on the community's preparedness while others compiled useful information into a library which anyone interested was welcomed to use. The science club constructed a model fallout shelter and worked in conjunction with the home economics department, who furnished lists of necessary food stuff for a two-week retreat. We feel that even though the actual radiation danger may never arise, we have helped to inform our neighbors about radiation thus eliminating the greatest radiation danger-- panic. While we studied this, we began to realize that it is just one of the many problems of our world which could be reduced by separating fact from fiction--a worthwhile project for any science club. The members, known as library assistants, help Mrs. Ball--high school librarian--keep the library attractive, serve at the check out desk, shelve books, file newspaper clippings, take care of periodicals, and repair books and magazines. For these services the members receive 1 2 credit which does not apply toward graduation but does show on their transcript that they have a knowledge of the workings of a library. The local library club is affiliated with the Texas Teenage Library Association which met in Odessa this year. Several members, along with Mrs. Ball, attended this meeting at which they took part in work shops. James Whetstone was leader of the workshop on books dealing with religion and poetry. The state library meeting was held in San Angelo and was attended by Mike McAllister, District II President; Carol Call; Lois Ann Cox; and Vickie Templeton. These students won the right to attend this meeting on the basis of grades, of attendance of the club meetings, and of serving as library assistant for the entire year. Library assistants leave high school with a good knowledge of the proper handling of books and of the workings of any library. In short, library assistants should be well ahead of others entering college in that they are acquainted with that awesome college library rumored to be a necessary part of passing the freshman year's work. J.S.M.S. Spanish Club The promotion of friendship and cooperation with foreign nations is often stimulated by the internal attitude of the nations' peoples toward one another. Here in Fort Stockton, one of our community's major complements to this promotion of friendly foreign relations, is the Spanish Club. The members of the Spanish Club discuss, primarily, the different customs, dress, food, and ideas of most of the Spa nish -speaking people. Through these discussions, Mr. Tyson, the sponsor, hopes to encourage the study of Spanish and of the customs of our Latin American neighbors. 145 Editorial Staff Marjorie Johnson John Armistead Donnie Jones Assis-Editor Marsha Wilson Sam Pfiester 146 Again, this year, we tried to bring you a different and exciting yearbook. In order to do this, we staff members devoted Monday nights plus hours before and after school and on week ends to prepare this yearbook. Much of the responsibility was shouldered by editor Tori Tracy and sponsor Mrs. Johnson. The writers racked their brains for ideas which were used in writing the copy. The photographers, led by Eddie Pfiester, risked their necks trying to get those pictures. The business staff, headed by Mary Margaret Baker, pounded the streets diligently, prodding businessmen into buying advertising. However, we did have fun, too. We ate our fill at the annual Christmas party in Tori Tracy’s home, with co-hostess Marjorie Johnson. The autograph party, successful in the past, was held in August for distribution and signing of the yearbooks. Certainly the preparation of this yearbook was a tremendous task, but it was both educational and rewarding for all of us. 3 7 ( S' Sly MM V DuisijnnpY' fadex AT YOUR SERVICE AT ANY TIME! The year has brought many changes besides that of the students' status. With graduation high school life in this building has come to an end. The new Fort Stockton High School Building will soon be in use, giving all those linked with the school a new way of school life. But this year will linger on in the memories of all of us. And my most vivid memory will be of the help so generously given to me in connection with this book. You, the student body, have given me the encouragement so needed. You, the teachers, have given me the invaluable assistance without which this book would never have been accomplished. You, the Panther staff, who have weathered my temper tantrums with unwavering patience, have endeavored to do your jobs with the persistence and congeniality necessary to a group working together. You, Mrs. Johnson, have given me the assurance and backing for which I shall be eternally grateful. If in the years ahead you look with pleasant memories through this book and feel a happy nostalgia for old places and old friends, you will then be realizing somewhat the pleasure I have had this year in compiling these bits of times, places, and people of which our high school life has been made.
