A century has gone into the making of Fort Stockton. During that time many mile-stones have been passed and the city has flourished. Events of great and small importance have taken place. Fort Stockton has advanced and become what it is today. The original fort was established in 1854 and was named after Commodore Stockton of the U.S. Navy. The town's first commercial business began near Comanche Creek on its northeast shore. Its first school was taught in one of the long adobe buildings on the east line of military square . The people, mostly ranchers, eagerly anticipated the annual round up where the fun was in helping one another. This year Fort Stockton has been celebrating its 100th anniversary. The town now has an industrious business district and the local Chamber of Commerce boasts a new Tourist Center. The town has six public schools, two of which have been recently built, and in the near future there are plans for a new two million dollar high school. Fort Stockton's population has increased with amazing rapidity because of its industrial potential and its friendly inhabitants, who are still as eager to help each other as they were when the city was beginning. Because we realize the importance of growth and heritage, we, the 1959 Panther Staff, dedicate this book to FORT STOCKTON, as a tribute to the efforts of all who worked to establish it and to aid in its growth.
