During that time many mile-stones have been passed and the city has flourished. Events of great and small importance have taken place. Fort Stockton has advanced and become what it is today. The original fort was established in 1854 and was named after Commodore Stockton of the U.S. Navy. The town's first commercial business began near Comanche Creek on its northeast shore. Its first school was taught in one of the long adobe buildings on the east line of military square . The people, mostly ranchers, eagerly anticipated the annual round up where the fun was in helping one another. This year Fort Stockton has been celebrating its 100th anniversary. The town now has an industrious business district and the local Chamber of Commerce boasts a new Tourist Center. The town has six public schools, two of which have been recently built, and in the near future there are plans for a new two million dollar high school. Fort Stockton's population has increased with amazing rapidity because of its industrial potential and its friendly inhabitants, who are still as eager to help each other as they were when the city was beginning. Because we realize the importance of growth and heritage, we, the 1959 Panther Staff, dedicate this book to FORT STOCKTON, as a tribute to the efforts of all who worked to establish it and to aid in its growth. KATIE SHOWS Senior Cla EETA POWELL Who's Who Each year the PANTHER gives special credit to those students of Fort Stockton High School who manage to lead the student body in their respective fields of study or school life. Some of the students in our Who's Who earned their place by having the highest grade average in their particular field; others were selected by the faculty. All certainly deserve credit beyond the classroom for their excellent work. All of these students were presented awards in the forms of medals, plaques, or books furnished by various organizations and businesses of Fort Stockton. KAY CLARKE This year's valedictorian of the senior class was KAY CLARKE, with an over-all average of 93.21. Being the highest ranking senior made her the recipient of a scholarship medal given by the American Legion. Kay also won the American History award by averaging 92.16 in that field. Averaging 90.76 earned MARY TINKLER the honor of being the senior class salutatorian. Besides being salutatorian, she also was chosen by the faculty to receive the Danforth award for her quality of leadership, and by the senior class and the faculty jointly for the Daughters of the American Revolution medal for citizenship. The plaque given for the highest scholastic average was earned by JOHN THOMPSON with an over-all average of 96.72. This plaque is given by the Rooney family. JIMMY McATEER was selected by the faculty to be the best all-around senior boy, which take s in consideration the achievements in athletics, leadership, citizenship, scholarship and appearance. The plaque for this award is given by the Fort Stockton Pioneer , Jimmy also was the highest ranking senior boy with an 86.95. For his quality of leadership, as judged by the faculty, he was also presented the Danforth ward. KEN McALLISTER, With a near-perfect average of 99.83, won the mathematics award, which is given by the Pecos County State Bank. He also received a medal for ranking the highest in the national mathematics test given to our best students in that field. According to a faculty vote, MARY MEJIA was judged to be the Best All-Around senior girl and was awarded a plaque given by the Pecos Theatre. 70 BARBARA ADDICKS, who managed to average a high98.2, was given the Bookkeeping award. 71 Old Fort Officers Horn THE PANTHER BAND CLAIRNETS Maury Hopson Josephine Gonzales Phil McClure Roy Pena Josephine Pena Beverly Wilson Kay Kerr Tom McKenzie Carey Page Carolyn Rankin Bobby Stone Becky Wyche Barbara Hatcher Reymundo Arcides Betty Baggett Kay Baker Jean Hillin Stephen King Martha Nicks Howard Peeples Ronnie Ray Anita Sanchez FLUTES John Thompson Joan Danielson Judy Bates Carol Ligon Susie Rowe Tori Tracy Sandra Robnett OBOES Nancy Baumgardner Sandra West BASSON Elizabeth Vickrey SAXOPHONES Lynda Alexander Buddy Bowers Ima Gene Woodward Fred Garcia Annie Rooney Melba Valenzuela Robert Sellars Eddie Pfiester Amelia Subia Marva Dell Tyler Marsha Wilson HORNS Trelly Smith Anne Bartlett Mike Childers Carole Whittacre Michael Hardy 74 THE PANTHER BAND BARITONES CORNETS Jimmy Cunningham Jerry Smith James Mayse Richard Harral Ronnie Hopkins Malcolm Almond Mart Adams Fred Dutchover BASES Mary Ann Maldanado Kirk McKenzie Tony Brons Terry Carpenter Stan Ten Eych Ray Martinez Juan Pena Bob Upshaw Ronney Conner TROMBONES DRUMS Robert Baker Claudette Kerr Jackie Graves George Crone Tom Hardy Gary Rolls Stephen White Randy Williams Ricky Aaron Kent Powell Sally Jones Nikki Kincaid Geri Hill Marilyn McKenzie Ronnie Niemann Virginia Ramirez BAND COUNCIL OFFICERS: Left to Right: Anne Bartlett, Drum Majorette; Nikki Kincaid, Secretary; Beverly Wilson, Vice President; Robert Baker, President; Kent Powell, Band Captain; Richard Harral, Librarian; Phil McClure, Junior Representative; Judy Bates, Freshman Representative; Not Pictured: Carey Page, Sophomore Representative; Jimmy Cunningham, Senior Represent tative. GIRLS’ CHOIR The purpose of the choir is to learnto appreciate good music and to learn to perform vocal music that can be appreciated. The choir's biggest performance of the year was the performance it rendered in Interscholastic competition. This year the choir made a second-division rating in concert and in sight-singing a third-division rating. The choir also pe rformed for local civic organizations and for school assemblies . This club renders such services as caring for films, repairing books, checking out of books, and the shelving of books. Reporter Pat McLeroy, Vice-Pres. Seniors and juniors are eligible for full membership, and sophomores may be elected as probationary members, but may not hold office. Barbara Addicks assisted in the initiation of the new members, who were Ken McAllister, Elsa Carrillo, Carey Page, Brenda Douglas, Mike Childers, Harriett Hammond, Phil Duncan, Anne Bartlett, Bill Wigley, and Sally Jones . The members are chosen by the staff advisors according to journalistic abilities, scholastic average, and willingness to work. Because of their previous experience, Brenda Douglas, editor, and Nan Wilmeth, associate editor, could offer that advice which makes a better yearbook. Between Phil Duncan, assistant business manager, and Harriet Hammond, business manager, the yearbook was kept out of the red. Okay, loudmouth, you tell them! 84 Above is a scene from the Staff's Christmas party held in the Gilley home. «rr The class and faculty divisions were prepared by Nancy Mitchell, Trelly Smith, Sam Fletcher, Leta Powell, Karen Carter. Well, ole life-of-the-party knocked 'em dead again. Carroll Schoenewolf and Mrs. Winnie Mae Johnson, advisors, strided along with the staff for a better yearbook. The Athletic department of F.S.H.S. was covered by Brian Gilley, Carey Page, and Eddie Pfiester; Carey and Eddie also served as photographers. Clubs and organizations were the main concern of Hayes Parker and Jane Robertson, organizations editors. Let's all have a Kissing Conversation. PLAYERS CLUB Any student who has a genuine interest in drama may become a member of the Players Club.
