Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1954 volume:

Though one may walk through the door s of F. S. H. S. forever as a student, he will never forget the shady grounds and peaceful atmosphere of his school: the creed, the song, and the many dates to remember. He may forget the names of the Faculty or classmates, but he will never forget F. S. H. S. 2 As each day, or each year of our life goes by, we must tear another event from our calendar of life. Often we look back and remem- ber the dates, but we can never relive them. Let's go through this year's Panther and stop--and remember each date, and remember it well before tearing it from the calendar of school events. Both teachers and students have suffered a great disappointment this school year in the loss of Jack Silliman. Jack was a boy who radiated cheer wherever he went. His entrance into the classroom was characterized by a warm smile. His good sportsmanship won admiration from his associates. His prankish spirit kept others on the alert, yet his pranks and jokes were always in fun. There was nothing malicious or underhanded in his attitude. His sudden passing came as a great shock to everyone, and though our loss is heaven's gain, we cannot but mourn his going. 4 IN MEMORIAM DEDICATION The group of men who often receives more criticism than praise for their accomplishments and who work without thought of pay or reward to improve our schools may be called forgotten men. Because of their devoted and little rewarded service, we, the P a n t h e r Staff, proudly dedicate the 1954 Yearbook to the Fort Stockton School Board. SCHOOL BOARD T. W. H i 11 e n is now serving his first year as president and his third year as a member of the School Board. Barney Ligon is serving his second year on the school board and is Vice-President this year. Ten Eyck, Secretary and Treasurer. The Directors are: Mrs. R. L. Walker, Chairman, Mrs. H.F. Gilley, Mrs. Joe Hallford, Burney Ligon, and Shelby Blaydes. One hundred and seventy-five exes registered in the gym on Homecoming Day. 95 F. H. A. float pictured above, is one of the many floats whichtook part in the Homecoming parade to welcome the exes. Homecoming Queen Freddie Jean Ellis, center, was elected by popular vote of the student body to reign during the football game with Crane and later at the dance. Luann Dyche, right, and Delvyne McSpedden, left, were runners-up for Queen and served as Duchesses. 97 r Exes dance to the music of the Sul Ross Modernaires at the Homecoming Dance, In this scene from the Exes Dance we see Monte Wootton, chairman of the Homecoming parade, taking time out to relax after a job well done. Mr. Huckaby gave the invocation and Mr. Ashley was the speaker. Patiently the Juniors and Seniors await their food. Carolyn welcomed the Seniors and Bobby Dee Walker gave the response. A toast was proposed by Sutton Allison and the will was read by Don O'Neal. Janell Parr gave the prophecy for 1974. The Banquet was served by Nayna Johnson, Betsy Mangum, Nancy Graham, Debie Pat-tillo, Gwen George, and Charlotte Walker. The girls were d r e s s e d in Hawaiian cos -tumes to go with the theme. Immediately following the Banquet a dance was given at the Stockton Hotel. Music was by the Dixie Williams Orchestra of San Angelo. 101 Pictured ABOVE are three couples who took time out to pose at Senior Prom. SENIOR PROM Moonlight and Roses was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom held May 14, at Hotel Stockton. Dixie Williams’ Orchestra, San Angelo, furnished music. Guests entered a beautiful garden scene through an archway of roses. More than 300 stars made of silver glitter were suspended from the ceiling to form the sky of the ballroom. Arches and trellises were covered with vines and roses, while white fences covered with greenery and roses encircled the orchestra and center posts. Large glitter balls representing the planets hung at the windows. On one wall was a hugh comet of silver glitter with silver tails. An immense golden moon and stars shone down on the orchestra. Wrought iron chairs, a rose-covered arch and a white styrofoam bird cage filled with red roses completed the garden scene. The refreshment table, covered with a white linen lace cloth, had a center arrangement of white carnations tied with the senior class colors of silver and blue. Among the flowers were the letters Sr.--'54. Blue candles in hurricane lamps flanked the centerpiece. Punch and cookies were served throughout the evening. Favors were made by the senior girls of dark blue net gathered around a tiny rose, the senior class flower. A silver crescent moon and stars were fastened to the net. 102 Pictured to the LEFT and BELOW are students enjoying the music of Dixie William's orchestra at the Senior Prom. Mr. Walker serves some of the senior boys. 109 It has been a custom for several years for the women of the Baptist Church to honor the graduating class with a breakfast. On May 8, 1954, the present senior class was honored. A western theme was carried out with arrangements of cacti and other desert vegetation used on the tables. The menu consisted of: : orange juice sausage and eggs, biscuits, sweet rolls and coffee. Billy Moody, Master of Ceremonies, introduced students from Howard Payne who presen :ed songs and talks to entertain the seniors. 110 Pictured above and to the left are scenes from the party the senior class gave in the Rural Community Hall where they enjoyed refreshments of hot chocolate and cookies. SENIOR DAY Well before the sun was visible on the morning of May 7, 1954, a bus load of seniors were on their way to Del Rio and Villa Acuna, Mexico, to celebrate Senior Day. The usual card games, group singing, and general horseplay was enjoyed on the trip down. The group had lunch together in Del Rio. The afternoon was spent in sight-seeing in Del Rio and in Villa Acuna. Everyone met at Ma Crosby's famous eating spot for dinner and dancing before returning home. 112 Coach, look at me! Four smiling--Seniors. SENIOR ASSEMBLY Don O'Neal, who was master of ceremonies of the superb assembly, entertained the student body. Detective Friday, alias Bobby Dee Walker, gets the facts from Grandma Louise Wood. The Four Lost Chords, Shirley, Irene, Connie, and Lyn lift their voices in song. 1 This year, the senior class gave a superb assembly. This assembly consisted of several acts done by various senior students. One of the acts featured St. George and the Dragonette. Bobby Dee Walker played the part of Detective Friday. Shirley Sullivan was Little Blue Riding Hood, and Louise Wood was the grandmother, who was the most to say the least. Don O'Neal was the master of ceremonies. He kept the student body laughing with his senior wit. The Four Lost Chords, Shirley Sullivan, Irene Belote, Connie Ryan, and Lynda Carson, also entertained with their melodious voices. Sad to say, no talent scouts were present at the assembly. Friday is again getting the facts, this time from none other than Little Blue Riding Hood, Shirley Sullivan, whose color has been changed to protect innocent persons. __________ NOTES ON And Lee always says he studies during Library hour! Poor old Kenney! Being a graduating senior was almost too much for him. Luann must be trying to inspire Bill to study for Journalism. LynandHarla must be remembering all the good times they have had this year. Do you think Delvyne and Harla will arrive at the same conclusion-------it does pay to study! Any boy should look as bewildered as Dale with nothing but girls around. THE SENIORS Connie and Delvyne pose for the photog rapher while the other senior girls ignore them. Must be a horror story Bobby is telling Odessa to write for the Tumblewood. Durland, Bobby, and Joe must be planning their strategy for passing final exams. These senior class officers, president Bobby Dee Walker and secretary Harla Palmer, must be more serious for other meetings--how can they get so much work out of the class? 115 At least some of the seniors are quiet and orderly during class meetings.
