Commanding Officer Commander Richard J. McCarthy is a 1964 NROTC graduate of Notre Dame and was commissioned as an Ensign in August of that year. He received a degree from the University of Hawaii in 1971 and graduated from the United States War College in 1982. His assignments include: USS Dratfleboro (EPCER 852) as Damage Control Assistant; USS Dominant (MSO 431) as First Lieutenant and Minesweep Officer; USS Reedbird (MSC (0) 51) as Officer in Charge; Headquarters United States Forces Japan as an Aide and Protocol Officer; USS Vesuvius (AE 15) as Engineer Officer; Arotu Naval Base, Salvador, Brazil, os an Exchange Officer in the Brazilian Navy Ship Repair Facility; USS Conyngham (DDG17) as Engineer Officer. He served as Executive Officer on USS Nashville (LPD 13); and as Executive Assistant to the Director of Plans and Policy, rapid Deployment Joint Task Force United States Central Command. He relieved Commander Taylor March 19, 1984, as Commanding Officer of USS Fort Snelling (LSD 30).

Commanding Officer Commander William I. Taylor, III was commissioned Ensign July 30, 1965. After his first four assignments, he reported to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974 and served as Company Officer until 1977. He then attended the Naval War College in Newport, FU. He reported to USS Truckee (AO 147) in 1978 as Executive Officer and served until decommissioning in 1980. He then served as Executive Officer of Fleer Composite Operational Readiness Group Two at the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, VA., until he reported aboard USS Fort Snelling (LSD 30) on December 18, 1981 and assumed duties as Commanding Officer. He served as the ship ' s commanding officer until he was relieved of these duties March 19, 1984.

Executive Officer Lieutenant Commandet Bruce E. Dunscombe joined the U.S. Navy in March 1973 and served as Navigator aboard USS Knox (FF 1052). His next assignment was that of Executive Officer onboard USS Takelma (ATF 113). Following this tour, he acted as Operations Officer aboard USS Pharris (FF 1094). Upon completion of o tour as First Lieutenant aboard USS Manitowoc (LST 1180), he served as Flag Secretary for the Amphibious Group Two Staff.
