FORT SCOTT IS TARGET OF WEAT HOT SPOT On july 13 and 14 Ft. Scott was the nation's hottest city, with offic- ial temperature read- ing of 120 degrees. Five deaths resulted from the intense heat, which melted candles in picture. TORNADO On May 31, a tornado from the Southwest swept Ft. Scott, split- ting farm homes, rip- ping countryside, kill- ing livestock, toppling trees and television antennas. ,ce , , S , . -,sZAff?.-ffe-., f I-IERMAN'S VENGEANCI IN 1951 MOST SNOW On Dec. 29, with a 27-in. snowfall, Ft. Scott is nation's snow- iest city, and breaks Kansas snow records. Weather headlines in Italy, Germany, Japan relate our cold story. FLOOD On May 2 and 3, heavy rains raised the Marmaton River and its tributaries to the highest point since '51, ruining river - bottom crops, covering Rail- road tracks, blocking highways.
