OFFICER'S QUARTER Fort Osage High School is named after the original Fort Osage which is located on the Missouri River a few miles north of the school. The fort, which was the first out-post of the United States in the Louisiana Purchase, was built of hewn white-oak logs in 1808, under the supervision of William Clark, joint commander of the Lewis and Clark expedition. One of the most important purposes of the fort was to establish friendly relations with the Osage Indianas who lived in this area, In 1808, George C, Sibley, appointed United States factor, or trader, at Fort Osage, floated his goods down the Ohio River in a keel boat to Fort Bellefontaine on the Mississippi and then accompanied the Fort Osage garrison up the Missouri to the fort site, He was met by a building party that consisted of a company of 81st United States Infantry, for garrison under Captain Eli B. Clemson, and a company of 80 St, Charles Dragons, mounted militia, who volunteered their ser- vices to General Clark for thirty days. Both parties arrived at the fort site on September 4, 1808 and on November 10, 1808 the post was christened Fort Osage. Late in 1809 George C, Sibley completed his permanent factory building. It contained his quarters, dining room and kitchen, office, trade room, and storage for merchandise and furs. The goods traded to the Indians consisted mainly of blankets, traps, guns, and ammuni- tion, tomahawks, knives, kettles, colored cloth, beads, silver ornaments, vermilion, and breech cloth. These goods were exchanged for buffalo robes, deer skins, and bear, beaver, raccoon, wolf, fox, badger, and muskrat furs. This factory was one of the few which the United States operated without loss. FACTORY MAIN BLOCKHOUSE From 1813-1815, during the War of 1812, the fort was evacuated because five of the northern United States factories had been destroyed by British and Indians. The garrison returned in 1816, At that time, George C. Sibley brought with him his youthful bride who became the hostess of the fort. One of her first guests was Daniel Boone of Kentucky, then 85 years old. Today the old fort buildings have been restored to their original form as these pictures show. Fort Osage High School, which was built in 1953, is named after this historical fort that played such an important part in our nation's history, Because the vicinity around the fort was the home of the Osage tribe, our athletic teams chose as their symbol, the Indians, They, like the Indians for which they are named, have shown pride and courage in all their activities. Both our school paper, the SMOKE SIGNAL, and our yearbook, INDIAN LEGENDS, further develop the Indian theme, The following pages of the yearbook consist of a pictorial story of Fort Osage High School. The pictures are of different departments and of various activities which have taken place throughout the 1960-61 school year,
