FLUHIDA KEYS PRINTING CORPORATION Fort .M ers Higli School has been a steachl) growing center ot echication since its inception in 1911. A continnous increase in emollment, tacnlty, and (jnalit) has l)een a hallmark of our progress. In addition to these things, a large cam- l)us with several primar - buildings and nian other useful facilities are now apart of MHS. All this from one small Iniilding and a sparselv ecjuip- ped playground of fifty years ago. The student hod itself has made great progress. Our glee club and band have been noted as outstanding in the state and are always rated high in competition. In all scholastic activities, MHS students do sup- erior work. In this earbook, we intend to show a representative cross section of a school that has made tremendous changes in the fift - ears since its establishment. The student body, their activi- ties and accomplishments will be shown in the light of ad ancing ideas in the field of educa- tion. This, our Golden Anniversary, marks the achievement of a great man goals, but leads us on in the same tradition of progress. 1961 ¥lH4r«H ADMIMSTRATIO page 12 ORCAMZATIONS page 80 Tulili! dF Ciiiilniits lyCl Culuusulialchian CLASSES page 22 .e Uf ■II i -| i d ACTiVITIES page 134 SPORTS page 108 ADVERTISEMENTS page 160 EDICATIDN To a man who has been kind, loyal, understanding, and helplul to us, the stu- dents of MHS, and who has done so much to better our school, we dedicate this, the 1961 Caloosahatchian. to Mr. Delhert Rheel. AFTER FIFTY YEARS These qualities have always been a part ot Fort Myers High School. Whenever a fomier student returns, a parent comes to visit, or an ' other visitor arrives at school, he is received and treated graciously by the office staff, facultx ' , and student body. This welcome is accompanied by a friend- ly, informative conversation and, if desir- ed, a courteous tour of our congenial cam- pus. While all this has the air of Southern hospitality, no visitor can mistake the pur- pose of this institution-learning. . s a visi- tor passes by the classrooms he observes the sincerity of the students and he can readily see their eagerness to gain the knowledge dispensed b - the teachers. The stud) ' halls are filled with quiet intensity as pupils prepare homework and study lessons. After classes, instructors are al- ways ready to answer additional questions put to them by the students. Visitors are truly impressed b - the atmosphere of hos- pitality and learning when the ' come to our school. MHS SupplN ' Bureau supplies students. Mrs. West prepares students for college math. Df Hospitality And Learning Fort Myers High School Singing Christinas Tree. ' ' • ■V_ AFTER FIFTY YEARS Greenie football games inspiri ' large crowds. 0 ' . ■■' • • 3 MHS majorettes add spirit to pep rallies. Our school has a history of expansion and development. This school we have now has come a long way from the first liigh school. Money for the first high school was donated b ' .Andrew Gwynne, and with this money was ])uilt one small build- ing and playground. . s time went on, many locations were used. Enrollment grew as many people came to this area. The teaching staff increa.sed rapidly in quantity and also in qualit} ' . Many new and advanced subjects were added to the curriculum. School clubs, social and ser- vice alike, were organized. Athletic pro- grams were not overlooked and now stu- dents had a chance to participate in art, glee club, band, and publications. Our present school is a cjuite large and capable institution of learning. The students now number 1430 and are very ably taught by a faculty of 58. MHS is continualK devel- oping and expanding to provide better ed- ucation for its students. Df Campus And Enrollment Modern MHS Campus is spacious and functional. AFTER FIFTY YEARS Mrs. Conover registers new students. School spirit plays a great part in the lives of the Fort Myers High School stu- dents. This spirit is shown hy the rousing support ot the athletic program and the eager participation in all school activities. Being a student in one ot the best high schools in the country is a fact that is ap- preciated and valued 1) the students of MHS. Many students willingly give up their time for projects to better the school. The boys and girls are always ready to help new pupils or to offer a cheerful word. There is also a strong tradition ol cooperation and a friendK- attitude be- tween faculty and students, even though the school is much larger now than in the early days. This congenial atmosphere still exists between the two. This points out the efforts of both to work together smoothK- and efficienth Teachers join in the fun of pep ralhes. Df Cooperation And Loyalty Our cheerleaders add color and sparkle to games. cA dministration Our teucliing staff has made great advances in the standards of our education. MR. DAMON IIUTZLER lias done an outstanding job as the principal of MHS. Though managing the school is a full time operation, he always finds time to talk with the students, whether giving advice on a problem or passing the time of day. Through his capable administration, Mr. Hutzler has made a great contribution to the progress of MHS. MR. ROBERT KREAGER is doing a commen- dable job in liis first year as Superintendent of Schools. This yearly iunilion teaches all lornis and phases of the go - ernment and the girls are given the opportunity to l)oth serve and participate in the different of- fices, such as the House of Representatives, the Senati , and all count) ' and cit ' offices. One looks upon this week as being tiresome and uninteresting until a person attends it; but, after attending this worthwhile program, one realizes that it is, in truth, an important and integral part of this country ' s foundation. The girls who attended from Fort .Myers were this year Stephanie Hessler, Bobbie Hollan and Linda Moodv. It wasn ' t all work, though, as they met man - friends and formed fond memories. Boys Staters were Sam Johnson, Dick Hutzler, Mike Jones.
