Hi folks!! I'm SLUGGER, and I'm here to guide you through the 1955 edition of your annual. First, though, let's review the school year around MHS: 1954-'55 introduced pink and black to all MHS'ers. Boys were even seen wearing pink pants to match their black shirts. All the girls wore long long beads during the winter with their usual skirts, sweaters, and black suede loafers, but they changed to layers of crinolines for summertime wear. The boysall groaned when the girls abandoned short shorts and started wearing Bermudas with socks of all colors. ln the dance field, the kids turned to iitterbugging and bopping , with such records as Hearts of Stone , Sh-Boom and Shake, Rattle, and Roll being played most on the iuke boxes. The slower songs were popular, too--ones like This Ole House , Hold My Hand , Teach Me Tonight , and Mr. Sandman. Everyone has his own favorite singer, but all the kids like Eddie Fisher, the Crew Cuts, Rosemary Clooney, The Chordettes, and the McGuire Sisters. Movie-wise, all the gals sighed over a newcomer, Edmund Purdom7 and everyone, female and male, went to the show when Marlon Brando was playing. The Monroe fMarilynQ was still a top box-office attraction for the boys, while two newcomers, Bob Francis and Grace Kelly, climbed rapidly on the popularity poll. As always, there was a popular hangout for the teenagers. The winter, Clyde's Snack Shop was built across from the Youth Center, and any time of the day, it could be found filled with MHS kids. The Snack House and Snack Drive-In still attracted a lot of couples after their dates, though. There were a lot of big events around school, too. December brought the Juniors' annual Christmas Dance, January, the seniors put on their play, Offa Pewter Platter , February was the month of the Talent Show, March 4, the Key Club sponsored the Confederate Dance, all the girls had to pay for the dates in March, too, during the Student Council's two weeks of Twirp Season , April gave us the Pan Am Coronation and Ball, plus the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, and June brought, to all the seniors, the glorious, but sad, day of graduation. That's about all, folks--the fads, fashions, and favorites of MHS during 1954-'55, Now ifyou'll follow me, l'll lead you on through the book, and I hope you'll enioy it!
