We are proud towelcome the Pirates here, and because in years to come, this will mean much to the people of Ft. Myers, we are recognizing their coming by devoting the theme of our annual to baseball--America 's favorite sport--and to the Pittsburgh Pirates. E , . X141 Because of your patience, encouragement, and guidance, which have led us on to higher goals in life, and because you have made it possible For us to obtain an education, we, with iove and deepest gratitude, dedicate this i955 edition of the Caioosahatchian to you, our parents. I'm SLUGGER, and I'm here to guide you through the 1955 edition of your annual. First, though, let's review the school year around MHS: 1954-'55 introduced pink and black to all MHS'ers. Boys were even seen wearing pink pants to match their black shirts. All the girls wore long long beads during the winter with their usual skirts, sweaters, and black suede loafers, but they changed to layers of crinolines for summertime wear. The boysall groaned when the girls abandoned short shorts and started wearing Bermudas with socks of all colors. ln the dance field, the kids turned to iitterbugging and bopping , with such records as Hearts of Stone , Sh-Boom and Shake, Rattle, and Roll being played most on the iuke boxes. The slower songs were popular, too--ones like This Ole House , Hold My Hand , Teach Me Tonight , and Mr. Sandman. Everyone has his own favorite singer, but all the kids like Eddie Fisher, the Crew Cuts, Rosemary Clooney, The Chordettes, and the McGuire Sisters. Movie-wise, all the gals sighed over a newcomer, Edmund Purdom7 and everyone, female and male, went to the show when Marlon Brando was playing. The Monroe fMarilynQ was still a top box-office attraction for the boys, while two newcomers, Bob Francis and Grace Kelly, climbed rapidly on the popularity poll. As always, there was a popular hangout for the teenagers. The winter, Clyde's Snack Shop was built across from the Youth Center, and any time of the day, it could be found filled with MHS kids. The Snack House and Snack Drive-In still attracted a lot of couples after their dates, though. There were a lot of big events around school, too. December brought the Juniors' annual Christmas Dance, January, the seniors put on their play, Offa Pewter Platter , February was the month of the Talent Show, March 4, the Key Club sponsored the Confederate Dance, all the girls had to pay for the dates in March, too, during the Student Council's two weeks of Twirp Season , April gave us the Pan Am Coronation and Ball, plus the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, and June brought, to all the seniors, the glorious, but sad, day of graduation. That's about all, folks--the fads, fashions, and favorites of MHS during 1954-'55, Now ifyou'll follow me, l'll lead you on through the book, and I hope you'll enioy it! xy kif UMPIRES NFACULTYH 1 ,, fb : 'I ' 0941 , V112 'Qing must be bored with his physics class! 1 'Q - . And whether the sport is football, basketball, baseball, track, or swimming, we can always rely on our Fighting Greenies to do their best. ' The M Club is made up of the boys who have lettered in one of these sports. Besides working toward winning games, these boys work to make money by selling football programs, sponsoring dances, and operating concession stands. This year, at the annual M Club banquet, Wayne Warriner, our speedy halfback, was named Captain of the Year. Jimmy Gilmore, the Greenies' second team all-state lineman, was voted Most Outstanding Greenie, and Buddy Collins was given WlNK's People's Choice trophy--award for sportsmanship and out- standing play. You know, this is one club that isn't so easy to enter, for you have to have athletic ability to become a member. Wavettes is a girIs'othlefic club., These girls have lettered in swimming, basketball, cheerleading, or have been the manager of one of these for at least one year before becoming a Wavette. The girls make money for their proiects by selling drinks etc., in the refreshment stands at all the home football games. With the money they make, they buy their sweaters and letters. What's the Student Council? Why, it's our student govern- ment organization made up of one representative from each homeroom. To be a member of this group one must be elected by the students in his homeroom. The officers of the Student Council run for election the preceding year. They compaign for two weeks and then they are elected by secret ballot. They really are a big help because they discuss problems and proiects of the students and try to enforce them. The group meets every other Monday, alternating periods. A number of projects are sponsored by the Student Council throughout the year. Remember Homecoming? We voted on our Homecoming Queen and the Student Council carried the rest out. The Supply Bureau is the largest and most important money-making project and the vice-president is in charge of this. One ofthe more interesting projects is Twirp Season, which is' held for two weeks in March. This is really nice for the boys, you see the girl is requested to make the dates, pay, etc. The season ends with a big dance. This year the Student Council gave SIOO to the library for new books and S50 Fora kiln in the shop de- partment. Sponsor this year was Mr. E. C. Thompson. OFFICERS: Eric Hansen, president, Monroe Palmer, vice presidentg Norma Adams, secretaryg Chester Mc- Gee, treasurer. 122 Helpl I'mdrowningl This is the first thing heard from new members of the ski club as they try skiing for the first time. I was going across the Edison Bridge one Sunday after- noon and stopped to find out about the club. Here's what I learned .... To become a member the only requirement is a love of salt water, because the beginner sure has a lot of spills at first. When he was improved, and gained in skill and self-confi- dence, he can try the new six-foot ski iump. The members are able to attend meets in Sarasota :nd Naples, and many of them win valuable prizes. This sport has become very aopular throughout the :ountry, but very few schools are able to offer this activity. M.H.S. is proud 'o be among the Few who :an boast of this. SKI CLUB - t N . . This is a familiar cry heard as another Inter-Club Council meeting is called to order by Eric Hansen, Chairman. I wasasked tosit in on this meeting so I could tell you iustwhat thiscIub's purpose is, so herelgo .... I would really be a mixed up kid and so would a lol' of other people in this school if it weren't for the Inter-Club Council. It is composed of the presidents and representatives of the various clubs around M.H.S. and is designed to avoid conflict between the different club meetings and also the schedule of classes. The Inter-Club Council is under the excellent supervision of Mr. E. C. Thompson and Mr. Francis Riley. Don't you think they deserve some recognition for a good job well done? CONSERVATION CLUB The other day I was made an honorary member of the Caloosa Conservation Club. What! You don't know about this club? Well, let me tell you about it. We protect the wildlife of Florida. Armed with face masks, rubber fins, and fishing spears, we dive in water which is overrun with predatory fish, and kill them, then we put more game fish in the same area. We also help the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission by banding quail and controlling the breeding habits of game birds and preventing the slaughter of them. These are a Few of the many activities of the Caloosa Conservation Club, and we're aided by ourfaculty advisor, Mr. Robert Barnes. They perform in many annual events, such as the Singing Christmas Tree, district and state music festivals, the Edison Pageant of light, and Easter Sunrise Services. There are several groups of junior and senior girls, the boys' chorus composed of sophomore, iunior, and senior boys, the ninth and tenth grade chorus, and the seventh and eighth grade chorus, which join together on special occasions. ' These kids aren't iust talented, they're hard workers, too. Selling hot dogs and coffee at all the football games are a part of the many money-making proiects of the glee club. To become a member, the only requirement isa love for music. They have a great many projects--I know you've seen the boys sel ing popcorn, peanuts and pom-poms at the Football games, and I guess many people have wondered where all this money goes that they make. I looked into this, and discovered that it is used very wisely. The Key Club gave S50 to the school library, had speaking stands made for class- rooms, and gave S50 to help buy a dishwasher and dryer For the cafeteria. The boys also printed and distributed programs for the annual Singing Christmas Tree put on by our Glee Club, and they made booster badges to hand out at pep rallies during football season. They were happy to label coconuts to send to the Pirates last fall. The Ke Clubber's attended the annual convention in Da tona Beach last December, and had a big F Y Y mme. BOYS'ANDGIRlS' STATE Hurry---Hurry---Hurry, you're going to be late! l ! That is a call familiarto any girl or boy who has attended Girls' or Boys' State. For one week they were rushed through a panorama of lectures, assemblies, elections, legislature, trials, marching, and loads of fun. For those of you who have not been previously in- troduced to Boys' or Girls' State, read on! l The purpose of it is to familiarize more young people with the ways of ourgovernment. They are given a perfect proiect with which to work, so as to learn. For one week in June, they meet in Tallahassee to run a scale size government of their ovsm. The Boys' Staters and Girls' Staters stay in dormitories on the campus of Florida State University. All of the preliminaries begin on this campus, with lectures for the girls and special schools for the boys. Although the meetings, rallies, and recreational facilities were on campus, they go to the Capitol building for sessions of legislature. This is possible because the Florida State Congress is not in session during these weeks. The program of Girls' and Boys' State is planned for every hour of the week. Because of the limited time and the amount of material to be covered, it is necessary to follow the schedule. The continual rush and strain for time requires every ounce of energy. This does not mean there wasn't any fun worked in. Hilarity has a way of sneaking in the most serious matters, and as usual, it sneaked in several places where it was least expected. With approximately 275 Girls' Staters and 300 Boys' Staters, fun comes easily. ln our school, Mr. Hutzler chooses the boys by their leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. Then the boys are sponsored by the American Legion. The girls are chosen under the same qualifications, although the American Legion Auxiliary, which sponsors them, iudges them from speeches. The only students elegibile from this program are eleventh grade students, this puts all the participants on an equal age level. 'jv ,ef ,Taj . ' 'QW si ' --va, A 5 . In previous years the annual and the newspaper have been separate classes, but this year they were combined. This doubled the confusion, but also doubled the fun, At first, everyone got mixed up, but as the year progressed, the staffs of the Tidal Wave and the Caloosahatchian learned how to work together and get a lot accomplished, while having fun at the same time. The Tidal Wave staff deserves a lot of praise for their excellent papers that appeared every other week around MHS. It took an awful lot of work to cover all of the activities and events as well as they did. The staff of the Caloosahatchian stayed up all night once to meet a deadline, and they all put in a lot of time outside of school to get the annual readyp but it was a lot of fun, too, and everyone kinda wishes it weren't all over. The school farm is used to raise money tor the boys'annual trip to the Tampa State Fair, and sometimes for a summer trip to some vacation-land. Even though they won only two games this season, the Greenies always gave the fans a colorful show of fine football in a determined effort to win. This determination led to some individual honors being won, The most outstanding being the selection of tackle Jimmy Gilmore to the ALL-STATE team and honorable mention on the ALL-AMERICAN eleven. Team honors for the T954 season went to halfback Wayne Warriner, who was elected Season Captain, and Bobby Collins, winner of the People's Choice Trophy. Gilmore was also voted Co-Captain. Our team was young and many of our losses were heartbreaking--we lost two games by only a single point. But the greenies did a wonderful job, and displayed their usual fine sportsmanship. Coach Jock Sutherland lost many of his veteran players through graduation, but in the next few years, when our boys gain some experience, the fans can be sure we'll have another championship team at MHS. They worked together as a team, so that their cheers came off in an organized manner. They certainly had excellent school spirit, and they showed it through their yells. These eight girls have stuck right by the football and basketball teams in wins and losses. They have kept the school spirit high through pep rallies, snake dances, and motorcades. A big proiect that the girls also undertook was helping to form a cheering section for the football games. We are all really proud ofthe girls and Miss Shirley Smith for their Fine iob of leadership. H. Roberts. The i954-55 Ft. Myers Green Wave basketball squad was a hustling team from the very start. The Fighting Greenies of this season were one of the most successful hardwood teams in Ft. Myers' history. Led by two hard-driving guards, Eddie Reed and Chuck Clingenpeel, Coach Erv lbach's Five Iron Men -- James Suggs, C. H. Roberts, Don Wanicka, Clingenpeel, and Reed--swept game after game from South Florida opponents to become one of the state's top aggregations. The gym was packed for all the Greenies' home games, not only because they were a winning team, but because their sportsmanship and team work were something to watch. They played as a team, every game, not as individuals. Our hustling guard, Eddie Bevo Reed, did himself proud by averaging over 20 points per game for the season. Don Wanicka and James Suggs were always right in there racking up points for the team, toop and Chuck Clingenpeel and C. H. Roberts were always outstanding defensively and under the basket. A lot of our games this year were close, so our subs didn't get to play too muchg but when they did, they did an outstanding iob too, and a lot of credit should go to them. These are our Fighting Greenies that we are all so proud of--the team that came out on top with a record of T6 wins and only 3 defeats. Congratulations to Coach Ibach for a swell coaching iob. Each year the swimmers improve and return to place their names high on the list of good swimmer and good sports. The team who has been the holders ofthe South Florida Conference Championship for the last Four years, was unable to regain this title again, due to the conference being broken up. The team has also ranked high in regional competition, losing by only one point in 1954. With their twenty-one lettermen, their fine new swimmers, and with Coaches Peggy Gray and Wesley Nott to guide them, the team again made a showing that MHS can be very proud of. Q15 Robin Dean.
