2 Dedication You went away, but now you have come back. Your smile, laughter, and friendliness warms us all each and every day. We missed you so much, but now you are here to stay and see 1975 through. She was born in Bartow on January 12, 1957, and has lived in both Fort Meade and Mulberry attending schools in both. For past years at FMHS she has been active on both the annual and newspaper staffs working in photography, and has also been a member of Quill Scroll. She lives presently in Mulberry with her parents, but attends Fort Meade High. She is an animal lover, enjoys photography and is a Beatle freak. As a graduating senior at FMHS, her plans are to attend the University of South Florida next year. It's only fair we show you how we feel and so it is with warmest expressions we have dedicated this 1975 FOMEHISO to you, Ms. Janet Lynn Hall. Dedication 3 Inflation is here!! The increase in the price of goods and services have doubled in some cases. Everyone is looking for dollar day specials, which are becoming increasingly harder to find. Cashiers grab a crumbled dollar bill while the customers reminisce about the time when the same item cost pennies. GAS WAR! —Eighteen cents a gallon! Funny? Sorry to say, it's no longer the truth but more like fifty to sixty cents a gallon. How people long for those days. Vacations are now limited, car pools constantly being formed, and automobile producing up to thirty-five miles a gallon selling for more than usual. Face it, fuel supplies are down and prices are up. The public may soon see gas rationing once again, or prices rising to a dollar a gallon. Anyway the needle points, the Arabs win. 4 Theme Theme 5 SPECIAL: Sugar Only $3.00 For 5 lb. Bag limit one please 6 Theme The current dread item in the market is sugar. Over the past year, retail sugar prices have increased 300 percent-and believe it or not, still climbing. Instead of paying forty nine to sixty nine cents for a five pound bag of sugar, you now pay anywhere from two to three dollars. The root cause of the runaway prices is the fact that world wide consumption has exceeded production by seven million tons during the past four years; people are eating more sugar than ever before (currently 81 million tons annually) while both cane and sugar beet crops have been cut by bad weather and blight. American homes, schools and restaurants may all be using artificial sweetner before you know it. Theme 7 With high prices as they are, the only thing to top it off is the constantly rising percentage of unemployment. Look all around-signs everywhere reading Not hiring. Rather disgusting isn't it? Those who have jobs aren't in much better shape, prices are rising but not wages. Students are really faced with the problem after graduation—college, military, vocational schools, or try their luck on the streets? What can really scare a student is to look at the long lines in any unemployment office. At the time, everyone seems to be borrowing money from their friendly banker, or pawning luxury items. 8 Theme Unemployment 7.8% Automobile, and mobile home companies are fighting desperately to stay in business these days by offering rebates. Every major automobile and mobile home companies are now offering up to five hundred in rebates for purchasing one of their many products. This rises due to the fact of gasoline, meaning money, which in a winding circle goes back to unemployment, the majority of unemployment being in automobile factories. What irony!! Along other lines, what will happen to sporting events? Schools need money to support them, and spectators need money to attend. Make the subject a little more brighter-purchase a car and use the company's money to go see a favorite football team. Theme 11 The President's WIN, (Whip Inflation Now) campaign brought many speculations to the public eye. Is the President and fellow aids really trying to solve the problem? Most feel however, his campaign should be supported as it could very well be the answer. Many citizens of course are wondering what the future actually holds. With beef prices as they are, one may some day find Americans eating a bite size meal in form of a tablet which supplies the body with it's necessary nutrition. This may sound satisfactory, but what about those who enjoy eating, and it certainly will sound funny asking a date out to eat. This may also cause problems in schools, such as the discontinuation of lunches. 12 Theme MM1 Whip Inflation Now! Theme 13 Pedal Power Or BUST!! 14 Theme Due to lack of funds, cities and counties are forced to budget their finances more carefully. If traveling along the highway, seeing unkept facilities, waterways, or streets makes you sick, think of the economy. Many people have purchased or searched through any old closets for a pair of trusty roller skates? How about oiling that rusted chain on an old bike or dragging out an old pair of red ball jets? That seems to be one answer to the rising cost of gasoline and rising cost of luxury items. It's not unusual in the least to see people walking or riding to and from work if not taking the bus. This may be another answer to a problem facing the U.S.—obesity. Theme 15 No matter how hard, one may try to overlook the facts concerning inflation, it's still there staring you straight in the face. Inflation is a serious matter, one which the public must face day to day until something is done about it. Young people especially need to voice their opinions and ideas strongly because they are tomorrow's leaders who can help solve or detour our nation's economic crisis. It can not be done by one person alone, but all must unite and give their strength equally. Inflation can either make a nation stronger or break it to small pieces. The decision lies in the hands of the public. It was the day to take Calendar Girl pictures and to any passerby, it was the time when the young ladies were wondering how they should stand, if they held their hands in the proper way, if their shoulders were drooping and thinking of how they'd love for it all to be over. Well, thanks to Dr. Paul Bearer, a television personality, it is all over now. Of the thirty-four who originally went out thirteen were chosen based on their looks and poise. Dr. Paul Bearer chose Angelia Camp as Cover Girl, and twelve other girls for each month of the year. Of course all the young ladies are lovely and will always be remembered on our calendars!! To some people Homecoming may not mean that much, but here in Fort Meade it's the happening of the year. The football teams are practicing extra hard. The cheerleaders are busier than ever with Homecoming week. The Quill Scroll is extra busy with the parade, class reunion, dance, and queen contest. And everyone is thinking of what outfit they're going to wear on this night. This year's theme for Homecoming was The Roaring Twenties: ''The Night The Tigers Died. The Homecoming parade started promptly at two p.m. with entries from nearly all the clubs at the high school. The Class of 1949 were reunited for the first time in twenty-five years. WOW! The Class of '49 ate dinner at Emmanuel's Restaurant in Fort Meade, then precede down to the football game. During halftime, the Homecoming Queen, Mari Lynn Williams, was announced and crowned by Jerry Bass, also announced was first runner up, Kathy Bumsed, and second runner-up, Angeila Camp. After the game, a dance was held in the Cafeteria featuring Lodestone. So, if Homecoming doesn't mean much to a person, perhaps it should because a person sure misses a lot of excitement if he or she misses Homecoming Week at FMHS. 1st Place-Spanish Float. 26 Homecoming Spanish Club puts finishing touches on winning float. 1974 Homecoming Activities 2nd Place—Senior Class of 1975 8th Grade Strikes Again Lindsey and Nancy work to finish 75 float. 3rd Place-lnteract Club Homecoming 27 Homecoming Day Starts Queen Candidales on Florida Beach. It was held again that night so one and all could dig on the third act of the play. The staff begins working late in the summer by attending an annual workshop at FTU given by Paragon Publishers in Orlando. This years delegates were Kathy Burnsed, Sharon Stuard and Debbie Wilson. While attending the workshop, they received an excellent rating and trophy for their productions entered in a yearbook contest. Afterwards it was back to Ft. Meade to begin working on this years book by selling ads. Other moneymaking projects are given by the annual through out the year such as horse shows, plays, and combination affairs with the Quill Scroll. Delegates also attend the annual FSPA convention held in Daytona Beach in April. The yearbook was presented to students in late May and the staff concluded its year with a steak dinner. This year the Quill Scroll became one of the most active clubs in the school. Members of Q S were proud to be a part of such an action club. Along with having the usual first semester installment initiation, the Q S took a trip to Disney World, held a Variety show joined with the junior Honor Society raising money for the stage curtain fund. Quill Scroll held a horseshow at the River Riders Arena. During the beginning of the year Quill Scroll decided upon having a garage sale, in which they received quite a bit of profit, during the Halloween season the club sold candy apples and popcorn balls at the Halloween carnival. The club sponsored homecoming week once again and ordered Quill Scroll jerseys to show their spirit. The club also sponsored a volleyball game where the Q S members played the faculty. The end of the year brought about another initiation which consisted of a steak dinner and another hayride at Mrs. Burch's house. Quill Scroll serves the community and school by building up leadership abilities for the leaders of tomorrow. Suzanne and Pete Gordan display spirit of Quill and Scroll. This year, for the first time ever, the newspaper is distributed to the students free of charge. And why not? To quote the sponser of the paper, “It's silly to have to pay for news you make yourself. And not only does Miss Ziccardi have a point but everyone has to say a quick right on to let the Black and Gold staff know not only do they dig getting their own news free but they're also grateful and understanding all the extra work and time it takes to deliver any news, yours, mine, or ours, free of charge. 44 Black Gold Advisor-Miss Kathy Ziccardi Digs On Giving Free News L to R.—P. Meade High School Black and Gold Band has been very active this school year. Performances have included a wide range of activities from many school functions to local and civic occasions. The marching band this year was one of the largest in the school's history numbering over 100 members. The appearance of two drum majors was also a new look. Fall activities annually include performances at all the varsity football games and participation by the band in all of the local parades. The month of November saw two very important activities for the band. With the opening of the multi-million dollar Lakeland Civic Center, the band was invited to march in the Dedication Parade on November 14th. The marching season was climaxed with the annual district marching festival held at the Winter Haven Stadium. The Ft. Meade Band was one of 17 bands that participated in this year's event and received an excellent rating. Though the marching season had ended, many activities remained on the band calendar throughout the winter and spring months. These included the annual Christmas concert, All-County Honor band auditions, District Solo and Ensemble Conteset, the 51st annual Orange Festival Parade in Winter Haven, and the District Concert Contest held at Fla. Southern College in Lakeland March 15. April 19th marked the third performance by the band at Disney World in as many years. The school year concluded with the Spring Concert and the third annual Band Banquet. Even though the school year is over with Graduation exercises on june 6th, band members will be back on the practice field long before school opens next fall preparing for the new football season and more halftime shows, parades, concerts, etc. Band 51 Band Director—Mr. Phil Wharton 1974-75 Majorettes 1st ROW-L. to R.-L. Lift every voice and sing, seems to be the motto of the Chorus at Fort Meade High. Whenever and whereever one sees the Chorus they are busy trying out new notes, livening up old songs or just singing because they do it so well. This year the chorus is under the guidance of Mrs. Fejes, a newcomer to Fort Meade High, who along with the students that compose the Chorus have thoroughly developed themselves into a Chorus of definite uniqueness in sound. This year the FFA Chapter at Ft. Meade got together and instigated a plan to present a leadership assembly for people of the different clubs who held office. At this assembly they provided better insights to the students concerning business techniques such as how to talk and act at a business meeting and how to introduce someone and many other how-to techniques. Later they divided into groups and held a question and answer period. The FFA members are quite active, involving themselves in meetings, banquets, fairs, and other activities throughout the county. With the lastest trend being towards a so-called Women's Liberation and their supposed boredom with the home and any house wifey activities, it's a wonder Future Homemakers of America still exists. The young ladies who comprise this organization work hard in preparing for the annual fairs, youth and local county fairs, as well as attending the district meeting which was held in Plant City. Also, they plan a banquet in the Spring. Perhaps everyone doesn't want to be an executive after all. This year the National Honor Society welcomed the teachers back to school with flowers and best wishes, sold fund raising items and made Christmas cookies and candy for shut-ins. Also they are continuing with their attempt to create a balance of harmony and a stimulated attitude through out the school and commuinty. SITTING-L. to R.-C. Scott, J. Prine, STANDING-M. Lewis, S. Ms. Janetta Rutland has organized a Drama Club at FMHS because of popular request. The Drama Club will put on a play in the spring if all goes well. Its members provide entertainment at assemblies. The members learn basic skills in body movement, dramatic speaking from oral interpretation, reader's theatre and stage drama. They are responsible for correspondence and business arrangements which encourage classes to attend cultural functions, such a those presented by Asolo, USF, PCC, Florida Southern, and Wauchula Little Theatre. The Drama Club works in conjunction with the Art Club and Ms. Barnes, for technical production and scenery, and the creative writing classes. 62 Drama Club Advisor-Ms. Janetta Rutland Library Has Successful Year The Library Club has 28 members this year. Nancy DeVocht was elected president and she has done an excellent job leading the club. The club decorated their doors for Christmas Door Decorating Contest. They did not win a prize but thought they were up to the standards of a Library Club. On December 20, the club had breakfast in the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m., a meal that was enjoyed by all. In the spring they are planning an educational trip to Tampa to visit a public library. They have had a successful year. Sitting—L. to R.—P. Carnley, W. Lewis, L. Watts, T. Watson,). Meacham, M. The winners of the District Contest were sent to Miami for the State Convention, during which they entered the stiffer competition. The Convention was not all hard studying and working, it had its good advantages. The delegates and officers attended long sessions of conferences and voting at the convention also. Members seemed to learn a great deal about leadership during their stay in Miami. At the end of the year and the closing of the club for a long vacation, the FBLA voted for new officers. And where are they going? These are just a few of the questions which are undoubtedly pressing on the minds of nearly all of this year's graduating class. It's been a hard task getting this far and the Seniors are now wondering how time passed by so swiftly, when it was only yesterday it seems they are waiting anxiously for this once in a life time year; The year when they could look down at the underclassmen, proud to be on the top. The year when they could get out five minutes before the rest of the student body to eat lunch. And now that it's here, they just aren't too sure if this feeling is of complete happiness. Sure there exists some happiness, the kind that comes with succeeding in the academic field, but still, they are sort of down at the thought of leaving a place that is all the home they've ever known. Also, the dreadful thought of leaving behind underclassmen whom they became attached to and to whom they have provided guidance and advice throughout the years. But they're one of a kind group and honestly feel they'll all make it up to the top of that ladder called success. Are you ready for this girls? Brotherhood is the key. Being editor of this years FOMEHISO has been one of the greatest privileges I have yet encountered. Working with the students and faculty of FMHS has been a great pleasure. The staff and I have tried to put into words and pictures happenings of this year which students can always remember especially the graduation class of 1975. I would like to thank the staff for their help and cooperation in making this years annual possible. I also feel greatly indebted to Mr. Jackie Burch, our advisor, for without her guidance, patience and understanding the staff and I would have been lost. A thank you is also extended to our principal Mr. James I. Paige, and the entire faculty administration, and student body for their kindness and cooperation this year. My appreciation is also given to Mr. Jerry Bass, our representative from Paragon Publishers who helped complete deadlines and gave us inspiring ideas. To the businesses who supported us, a very deep appreciation is extended. Last but certainly not least is Mr. Dick Ashe of Ashe Photo Company, who helped us in more ways than one. To Mr. Ashe-Thank you very much. As editor I would like to remind the public that inflation will not go away by itself, but the help of each other. The staff and I hope the 1975 FOMEHISO will hold many fond memories and reminders especially the seniors. Acknowledgements 173 What will the American public do? Will they stand by and let a crisis such as this break their nation apart, will they suffer from a second depression, or will they come through as in times past? Only time will tell, but meanwhile the citizens of Fort Meade must not stand by and watch the U.S. rotate around us, but get involved to help better our country. Students as FMHS know that times are changing, and they're changing with them. You can see in their dress, actions, ideals and aspects of life. Students are aware of what's happening and hopefully plan on doing something about it. Inflation has hit hard! True, but together with one another, something can and will be done.
