Most are recorded in the FOMEHISO for '73, recalling bygone days of fun and frustration. Yes, time it was and what a time it was! 3 Dedication — Mr. Foster This individual is a man of all tal- ents and spirit. He is a Pembroke State College graduate who has serv- ed his country in the Air Force. Golf and fishing are his favorite pastimes. He is an all-around athlete, excep- tional in track. Fort Meade High School has had him as a faculty mem- ber for three years teaching science. He has been able to solve the prob- lems that come with the job of spon- soring the Class of '73. It is with deep appreciation that the FOMEHISO staff dedicates this annual to you, James Stanley Foster. 4 6 7 The teachers use many new techniques and devices to teach the 3 R's. Lectures, film projects, star- ing contest and pin-ball machines are used for this purpose. There are times when students as well as others don't take advantage of all oppor- tunities, but school life as well as every day life continues Day by Day. 8 9 10 Clubs, sports, and homework ire only a few of our many respon- libilities and challenges of school that one must meet. Through these srocesses one becomes a better stu- dent and learns to accept each new situation Day by Day. 12 £1 The many years that one is in school prepares a student for life bqth physically and mentally. A person stops growing taller physically but never stops learning. One must stay up with the world, for it grows Day by Day. 14 16 17 As one continues to learn, he must continue to know that it is true peace that one wants. For this to happen people must: love Thee more dearly, see Thee more clearly, follow Thee more nearly, then they will have Peace on Earth, Day by Day. 18 Calendar Girls KvvvM m Cover Girl Diane Goolsby Chosen by Coach Hal Smeltzley of the world champion, Florida Southern College Baseball Team. First place in the school division was won by the Annual Staff, second place - Leo Club, third place - D. C. T., and honorable mention - Black and Gold and 9th Grade. The commercial division trophy was won by the Posie Parlor. At halftime of the football game, the floats again paraded for the crowd and trophies were presented to the winners. Sue Albritton was crowned 1972 Homecoming Queen by last year's first runner-up Sher- ry Wilson. Gloria Clark was first runner-up and Marilyn Freeman was second runner-up. With the help of Coach Turner, Coach Cagiano, and Coach Davis, the 1972 Fort Meade Fighting Miners turned up an 8-2 record and another winning season. In the early part of the season the Miners looked like they might go all the way with im- pressive victories over Wauchula, Frostproof runner-up in the State 2-A playoff, and Avon Park. But hit by a wave of injuries and losses to Santa Fe and Mulberry, the Miners didn't make the playoffs, but did keep the winning tradition at Fort Meade. Well I just want you to know that I've run for lots of touchdowns in these shoes. Marty Hasty All Conference And Another Winning Season Lindsey Aycock All Conference Hon. Men. The Miners made a fine showing all year, however The Miners were at an extreme height disadvantage in every game. Things were made even worse when pivot man Greg Brinson was injured early in the season and was unable to play. Coach Larkin did a fine job in coaching again this year and should have a good experienced squad next year. Coach - Hal Larkin 54 Tommy Sharp Greg Brinson jumps at the start of another victory. The Baby Miners did an outstanding job shooting the rock and lost only four games this season. Many of this year’s J.V. players will be moving up to varsity and will help strengthen the varsity ranks. Looks like Fort Meade is going to be strong in basketball for a few years to come. Coach Hal Larkin 58 Stanford Goes to State STANDING: G. Dunlap, G. Moore, B. Daughterly, D. Stanford SITTING: E. Wilcher, A. McDonald, R. Freeman The 1972 Cross Country season is now history. The team put it all to- gether in the final weeks to make a good showing in both the conference and district meets. One of the team members, Donald Stanford represented Ft. Meade in the state meet. The group of runners logged mile after mile in practice and at the meets, the 2 1 2 mile race seemed like a sprint when compared to a 9 mile practice run. The team was runner- up in the conference to Avon Park who went on to win the state champions flip. Track Team Wins T B C Larry Carlton throws the shot-put. The Fort Meade Track Team won Tampa Bay Conference and placed second in Polk County Meet. The strongest events were 100, 220, 8880-relay, the discus, shot-put, high jump, and broad jump. Fort Meade placed second in the state con- test, with seven members qualifying. Happy MacDonald was top in state high-jump. Lorenzo Evans was top in state shot- put, Evans was also Fort Meade's highest point receiver for the entire track season. The 880-relay team consisting of: Arthur McKenzie, Alonzo White, Larry Graham, and Loren- zo Evans, was disqualified at state for running out of the allotted zone. The track team under the leadership of Coach Jerry Strickland had a very successfull season. Coach Strick- land predicts that the track team will be the best of the 2-A class this year. Albert Tucker wins the race. The Track team practices for a meet. Athletic Director and Coach Jerry Strickland. 61 Fort Meades' Dirty Dozen Strikes CLOCKWISE: T. Dunlap, T. Sharp, E. Conners, L. Aycock, P. Groover, J, Clyatt, Coach Gary Cagiano, C. White, J. Nel- son, H. Butler, and D. True underneath. Just as a baseball takes many unexpected bounces, fate did not always deem Cagiano’s Dirty Dozen victorious, yet they never failed to prove worthy of the title fighting miners. The '72 sea- son might well be termed as a building period” with a team con- sisting of 11 sophomores and juniors and one graduating senior. Under the leadership of Coach Cagiano the team had an overall 7 and 10 season record and a 5 and 4 conference record making the Miners runner up in the Tampa Bay Conference. With their season over the Miners hope to reach higher goals in '73. Sliding to Victory! L. to R., 1st ROW, T. Dunlap, T. Sharp. 2nd ROW, H. Butler, and D. True. L. to R., 1st ROW, L. Aycock, J. Tennis is a new sport to Fort Meade High School, and is the first sport in which there is a separate girls team. Coaches Alex Rogers and Liz Lewis have been working diligently with their respective teams. Although girl's tennis does not count in com- petition toward the con- ference all sports trophy, it is a big boost for women's lib. Through hard work both tennis teams will make the students and adminis- tration proud of them. L. TO R. S. Fulse, D. Wright, J. Camp, I. This year many new sports were added to Fort Meade's athletic department. Golf was one such sport. The golf team played many 9 hole matches and played in the county and district matches. The team consists of four team members and alternates. The home course was the Bartow Golf Course. The team put out a good effort with the help of Coach Turner. Sponsor - Coach Turner Bob Weikert holds number one position on Golf Team. P.E. Teaches Sportsmanship Karen Whitworth is sure that the ball hit in bounds. Physical Education builds stu- dents physically through many types of indoor and outdoor activities. Track, football, and volleyball are just a few of these sports. Williams, F. Thomas, L. Berrien, H, Willis, S. Lunsford, W. Page, J. Groover Eighth and ninth graders had a 12-gamc basketball schedule this year, and it was an uphill climb all the way. Every team played by the eighth and ninth grade squads came from schools with enrollments much larg- er than that of Ft. Meade. Teams faced by the eighth and ninth grade cagers included Kathleen, Bartow, Mulberry, Seth McKeel of Lakeland, Southwest of Lakeland, Crystal Lake of Lakeland. Eighth and ninth graders had to do all their practicing on outside courts rather than an indoor gym, a handicap not faced by their opponents. But the Ft. Meade boys gained considerable experience and showed steady improvement during the season, and most experts agree this is what junior high basketball is all about. Paul C. Foraker was eighth grade coach and Jerome Davis handled coaching duties for the ninth grade. bb Coach Jerome Davis Coach Paul Foraker F.H.A. Prepares Girls To Reach OFFICERS President - F. The FOMEHISO staff has finished its work again. None of these dead- lines could have been reached without the assist- ance, patience, and enthusiasm of many people. As editor of the yearbook, I would like to thank, first of all, Mrs. Burch for help. She is a wonderful s p o n s o r and advisor. Also, the staff members who put the annual together for me. I want to thank Mr. Dick Ashe, of Ashe Stu- dios, and Mr. Lon Waters, who is our representa- tive for Taylor Publishing Company. Thanks, to our student photographer, who developed and printed many of our pictures. And last but not least, the administration and faculty. Without their patience we wouldn't have the annual. And, also the individuals and businesses, who with their financial support, made this yearbook possible. Yet, as the end of the day nears, we don't worry about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow, we must take care of the happiness and the problems we have today. And we do this, only in living our lives DAY by DAY. 171 Many hard working days, some fun-filled days, and of course extracurriculum activities, were a part of another year at Fort Meade High School. The faculty and students worked together to make this one of the most prosperous and memorable years in the school history. Day by Day. 172 173 Many students have planned for themselves many activities for the years to come. They look forward to full and eventful lives. Day by Day. 174 175
