1972 Fomehiso Presented by The Annual Staff of Fort Meade High School Fort Meade, Florida Volume 27 Dedication Bruce Anderson Well, this book is finally finished and we wanted you to be the first to know. In it are wrapped away all of our most treasured memories. Do you still remember the good times we had? Yes, even the bad times hold their own sentimental value. There were the moments of shared laughter, and moments of bi t ter tears, and then there was silence. Since you left there's been a vacancy no one can ever fill, and we just want you to know that you are still remembered. There will always be a place in our hearts reserved for you. So Bruce, it is with fondest memories that we dedicate this, the 1972 FOME- HISO, to you. 2 Table of Contents Opening Section pages 1-17 Highlights pages 18-39 Sports pages 40-61 Organizations pages 62-89 Curriculum pages 90-101 Classes pages 102-141 Advertisements pages 142-162 3 To some extent the year and its events shape an individual. More often, however, it is the person who creates events and molds the year. As people, we must form our ideals and valu- es and strive to accomplish our goals. Only people are able to reason, learn, love, laugh, and more important, shape their destiny. It is with this in mind that we . . . FOCUS ON THE PEOPLE. Desks . . . books . . . istru- ments . . . equipment ... in- significant in themselves, derive their meaning from people. With- out people, these inanimate ob- jects are worthless, purposeless, in fact they would be nonexistent. Their potential usefulness in fully attaniable only through . . . PEOPLE. 6 7 A school is held together by the unity of its stu- dents and faculty members, as well. We begin each year as many single units, each, in a sense, separate from the whole. Soon, however, the ne- cessary union takes place and we are drawn closer by a strong bond of friendship. While still retain- ing individual identities, we develop comradeship which notes us together as . . . PEOPLE When we become involved in ac- tivities we must be willing to ac- cept responsabilities and chal- lenges that must be met and mas- tered. Involvement is an impor- tant part of living which cannot be overlooked but must be met face- to-face. In becoming involved we lose ourselves in others and our work. This, in turn makes us more than ever . . . PEOPLE. 10 II 12 In play we learn to see each and every person as an important part of the whole. In every spot a oneness of purpose and an all out effort is needed. Teamwork has no place for dissention or discord; it is all or none. When we play together we con- tribute a part of ourselves and we in return re- ceive a part of others. When we do this we have a chance to see each other as . . . PEOPLE. Classes, work, and study prepare us for life in to- day’s complex society. Our minds, unlike our bodies, never stop growing and it is necessary to feed them with the proper information. In our quest for knowledge we stop to question and to wonder. The solutions we find will perhaps make living easier for us . . . THE PEOPLE. 14 15 With out friends we are able to share our hopes, ideas, and laughter. The good times and not so good times are more special when they are shared with someone you trust. The tears of sadness and moments of tension, excitment, and tenderness are easier to bear if someone else knows and understands. This understand- ing is the part of togetherness that is . . . Parade Salutes Walt In order to promote greater school spirit and participation for this year's Homecoming Game, the members of the Quill and Scroll decided to sponsor a Homecoming Parade. Clubs and home- rooms were urged to enter floats centered around the theme, Disney World. As the day of the Homecoming Game approached, one could feel the excitement in the air, and the floats began to take on their intended shape. On the day of the parade, students and their advisors frantical- ly hurried to put the finishing touches on their floats. Each person was hoping that his float would win first prize. During all of this activity, Quill and Scroll members were anxiously looking up into the sky and praying that the parade would not be ruined by a downpour. Evidently their prayers were answered, and the parade began without a trace of rain. Disney World, Opening The parade began on schedule, and those who had a part in planning it breathed a sigh of relef. As the procession wound along its route, the faces of many Disney Characters smiled at the onlookers. It seemed that all the preparation and work that had gone into the parade had been worth it. When the judging was finally completed each partici- pant left thinking about halftime at that night's game when the prizes would be awarded and the floats would again be dis- played. Winners Announced at Half-time At the Homecoming halftime that evening the trophies for the first and second place winners were awarded. Mr. Paige accepted the large trophy to be kept in the school for use in future Homecoming Parades. Then it was announced that the Annual Staff had submitted the prize-winning float. This trophy was presented to Barbara Stanford, editor. Second place went to River- side. Mrs. Ronnie Mosley accepted the trophy. Al- though no prize was given, the Library Club received Honorable Mention. The rest of the clubs that submitted floats, while slightly disappointed, went away with plans for the winning float in next year's Homecoming Parade. 2nd Place RIVERSIDE SCHOOL 1st Place ANNUAL STAFF Gwen Harvey 1971 Homecoming Queen Mary Lou Mayfield crowns the 1971 Homecoming Queen, Gwen Harvey, as Janet Loadholtes, 2nd runner-up, and Sherry Wilson, 1st runner-up look on. The 1971 edition of the Fort Meade Fighting Miners continued to carry on the tradition of football supremacy in the area. At the beginning of the season, it was thought that this would be a rebuilding year, but under the direction of head coach Blaine Turner and his assistants, Gary Cagiano and Jerome Davis, the team came along much faster than anticipated. The Miners captured their fifth straight Tampa Bay Conference Championship, and added frosting to the cake by defeating Cres- cent City in the Citrus Bowl at Inverness. The team finished the season with a fine 8-2-1 record, placing many players on various all- star teams. Under the guidance of Coach Hal Larkin, the team won the Zephyrhills Christmas Invitational and the Tampa Bay Conference Championship, enroute to a 19-2 season. When team leader Happy MacDonald was lost for the season, it appeared that fortunes were on the wane. The team put forth tremendous effort in picking up the slack and continuing to get the job done. Long practices and hard work were a very real part of this year’s Junior Varsity. The team put together a very creditable wonloss mark, inspite of the absence of early season star, Joe Nelson, who was moved up to the Varsity. The seasonal record would have been ever better had the team not fallen victim to a slump in the last few ga- mes. This year Ft. Meade participated in its second year of Cross Country competition. Cross country meets cover a 2 1 2 mile course over rough terrain. The team runs 40 to 50 miles each week for practice. This season the team won victories over Avon Park, Lake Wales, Winter Haven, Bartow, Clewiston, Tampa Catholic, and Sebring. Austin Alexander and Donald Stanford were the team standouts. Ft. Meade was well represented at every meet that the Cross Country team entered. Coach Jack Wolfe Miners Win State Darwin peoples clears the pole to place in the meet. The 1971 Fort Meade track team began the season on a good note . and got stronger as the season progressed. The Miners captured the Tampa Bay Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year, and went on to take the district crown. After many practices and a lot lot of hard work, the Min- ers went on to capture the state class B track champion- ship. Much of the success of the team can be attributed to Head Coach Jerry Strickland and Asst. Coach Stan Foster, who worked very hard in getting the boys to perform to their full potential. Greg King clears hurdle on his way to victory. Miners Prepare For Season The 1971 Fort Meade baseball team found themselves in a rebuilding year, with many Sophomores and Juniors holding down key positions. Under Coach Bob Brown, the team did manage to win several games, and gave some good opponents a tough time, showing that this year's team will be a much improved one. Lindsey Aycock and Troy Dunlap warm up before the big game. Hank Butler winds up for the pitch. Donnie True tags out the sliding base runner, Ernie Conner. PAIGE, Principal Fort Meade can be proud of its excellent school and administration. Amidst the school's new and modem facilities, students are able to receive the type of education to prepare them for college, or, as the case may be, a vocation. Besides a well equipped building, however, well informed administrators are needed; ones who know the problems of aschool and will use their knowledge to make it run smoothly at all times. Fort Meade High School is fortunate to have just such an ad- ministration. It is through their guidance this school has been molded into what it is today ... a credit to the community. The FOMEH1SOstaff could not have reached this final deadline without the enthusiasm, cooperation, and assistance of manypeople. Our special love and apprecia- tion must go to Mrs. Jackie Burch who was needed to advise and assist. The staff also whishes to extend its appreciation to: Mr. Dick Ashe of Ashe Studios, Mr. Lon Watters, of the Taylor Publishing Company, Mr. Michael Westbrook and the Photography Class of Fort Meade High School, who photographed, developed, and printed all the pictures that were needed, the administration and faculty, who put up with us throughout the year, and the individuals and businesses who made this book possible through their financial support. Many of these dreams we will share with others, but a few must be saved and locked in the sepths of our souls. Some dreams will die as leaves fall from the trees, but many will flourish and become realities. We must not dwell on these past memories, but must move on to dreams of the future. In the fu- ture lies our success or failure, happiness or sorrow. It is hoped, however, that we will be ready to accept what the future holds in store for us. . . the PEOPLE. 9H w A '' ? - A. i in r- 1 ’ r ifta I ■ PIGWA I !
