Fomehiso 1967 Volume 23 Fort Meade High School Fort Meade, Florida Fort Meade High School 1912-1967 For fifty-five years this building has symbolized wisdom, ambition, happiness, frustration, hope, and distress to the students of Fort Meade. Its halls have re- sounded with the footsteps of two generations, but soon they will be silent and lonely. The dreams of future students will be housed in a new building with modern facili- ties, and these halls, which now ring with the joy of the present, will ring only with the echoes of the past. Alma Mater Fort Meade High School, Now we hail thee, Rich in memory's lore! We shall ever love and praise thee, And thy name adore! Alma Mater, we salute thee, In our hearts supreme, And thy watchword to be noble, E'er shall be our theme. Fort Meade High We adore thee, And we shall be true To thy noble admonition E'er to dare and do! Howard L. Beynon, an individual who has tripled as a friend, servant, and administrator through thick and thin” for three years at Fort Meade High School. Howard Beynon was born on August 16,1919 in Youngstown, Ohio, where he attended high school. He later attended the University of Tampa where he received the Degree of Bachelor of Science, and George Peabody College in Nash- ville, Tennessee, where he earned the Master of Arts Degree. He is married to the former Glenna Hill of Tampa and they have three children: Howie, Debbie, and Joe. Father, golfer, fisherman, singer, actor, and athlete: you name it—Mr. Beynon has done it! He served his country for four years and ten days in the United States Army. He was a Deputy Sheriff in Hillsborough County and a policeman in Tampa. He was also an amateur boxer and fought several times in Youngstown, Ohio. This variety of professions and pastimes would surely help to account for his keen understanding and appreciation of all kinds of people. So, to this man of many faces,” whose spirit of enthusiasm makes everything he does his favorite thing,” the Annual Staff respectfully and lovingly dedicates this book. 4 Our Favorite People In memory of Mrs. Lula D. Peeples, who taught at Fort Meade High School for thirty years. She helped shape the destinies of several generations of Fort Meade students, who will long remember her kindness and generosity. The Lula D. Peeples Chapter of the National Honor Society, which she helped found, is named in honor of her. In grateful appreciation to Mr. Bill Bevis, who has acquainted the citizens of this county with the historical importance of Fort Meade, and who has made the citizens of this city just a little prouder of their heritage. Although most of us will remain here to enjoy our favorite things and create future mem- ories, some of us will embark on new adventures in distant places. We may never meet again, but we will not forget this year, or each other, or our favorite things. 7 8 9 These are a few of Our Favorite Things v'x I !a RESTAURANT - .1 I “ 0 EN -HDTBISC. Certainly these make “mom- ents to remember” for many times these turn into our favorite subject— Campus- ology.” 31 Future Homemakers of America FIRST ROW; D. Bowen, M. Bone, S. Knight, P. CLASS Fomehiso 'We gotta make that deadline!' . . . 'OUR pictures are caught in the CHRISTMAS rush?' . . . 'WE want senior football pix!' . . . 'What do you mean, they DIDN'T buy an ad?' . . . 'WHAT annual?' Unfamiliar words? Not to the Fomehiso staff, who photographed, edited, fought, and sold their way through the school year. Besides all this, they took time out one hot September after- noon to have a party at Lake Buffum. Of course this was after taking class pictures all day. In spite of all this they did manage to put out an annual (at the time of this writing it is fervently hoped that this will be the case.). But whatever this year was to the staff, it certainly wasn't dull. Mr. Robert V. Canter was selected from the Class of 1966 for having the Highest scores on the Senior Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Senior Placement Test combined. He in turn named Mr. Cloud as the teacher which he felt had inspired and influenced him the most during his High School career. This was the second time that Mr. Cloud has been named as STAR teacher. The Polk County CTA was awarded this plaque as recognition for a workshop project which the CTA held for the training of substitute teachers. The award was given at the Southeastern Regional CTA meeting held in Durham, N. C. The Polk entry was then sent to NEA for recognition and Mr. Carl Griffith received it at the National Convention in Miami, Florida. 1966. 79 Young American Award Winner The Young American Award, which was created this year, honors a young citizen from each high school. A committee con- sisting of the principal and teachers nomi- nated five students from this school. A panel of judges consisting of prominent Polk County citizens selected the most outstand- ing of the five to be the recipient of the award. This judgement is based on char- acter and achievements in school and the community. Phyllis Nora Childs was the winner from our school for 1966-67. Due to the fact that other winners of the Young American Award were not announced before our final deadline, their names and pictures could not be printed. Polk’s Top Teens These students were selected by the Lakeland Ledger as three of Polk County's Top Teens. They were featured at various times in that newspaper as recognition for their outstanding achievements. From left to right they are: Cathy Lewis, Bill Watts, and Nora Childs. Boys' And Girls' State Bill Watts, Ermage Bulter, and Bill Lovett were last years delegates to Boys State which is sponsored by the American Legion. Girls State delegate was Cathy Lewis, who was spon- sored by the American Legion Auxiliary. These lucky students stayed at Florida State University, in Tallahassee, where they were given instruction in local, city, and state government. Seed Scholarship Winners Pam Lastinger, Keith Belcher and Connie Wilkes were last years recipients of the Seed Scholarship. These awards are given to en- courage students who have college potential to prepare for college education. The scholarships will grow each year until these students graduate. 81 A THLETICS This section is dedicated to those who seek to better themselves through ath- letics. The changing of classes and the clanging of lockers greeted the class of '67 in September of 1961 when they embarked on their high school career. Ermage Butler served as President of the seventh and eighth grades. Then none the worse for the wear, Willard Wooten took the gavel and held the reins through the ninth and tenth grade years. Moving nearer the spotlight John Hendrich was elected president and the Junior Class began its activities with colossal enthusiasm. The class play, dedicated to Linda Russell, was the first noteworthy accomplishment which established them well on their way financially to the big prom. The play, directed by Mrs. Harriet Willett and entitled Quit Your Kidding , was a smashing success even though the accidental death of Linda Russell that very day put a damper on the cast and entire class. The highlight of the Junior year was the ordering of the class rings and re- ceiving them in February. The financial status of the Junior class was somewhat expanded with the annual magazine sale and the class was now assured of the dream prom. The theme, Roman Holiday , was chosen and committees worked like mad. The Shingles fur- nished the music and the gala evening will live forever. The last task for the Junior class was to decorate football field for their gradu- ating comrades. Now in the full glow of the spotlight the Senior Class elected Elaine Putnel as their first lady president and John Hendrick went on to the high office of Student Body President. The Senior tests and Senior pictures were taken; invitations and cards ordered. The class chose British Racing Green and Off- White as class colors with graduation robes of the same colors. The Impossible Dream was the very popular class song and the motto was appropriately: Never believe the impossible; never regret the past. The play, directed by Mrs. Boatwright was entitled We Dude It . As time fleeted by with Homecoming and classes and faces, and memories, the class of '67, matured and well on their way to shaping their destinies, came bravely to their graduation day. The wheel of fortune will spin and now it is to each his own. ” And after our school years are gone, These Memories will linger on. 138 Senior Directory GLORIA ANN BASS Jr. Class Play; Band 1, 2; Chorus 1,2,3; Librar- ian 3; Basketball 2, 3, 4; FHA 1,2,3,4; Track 2; Pep Club 1,2; Black and Gold staff 4; Sr. Class Play BOBBY JOE BELCHER Spanish Club 3,4; Library Club 4 MICHAEL ARNO BIRDSONG FFA 1, Band 1, Chorus 3,4; Jr. High Football 1.2, Varsity Football 3,4; FOMEHISO staff 4 JOHN HENRY BLAKELY (Transfer from Union Academy) Safety Patrol 1,2,3; FFA 1; Math Club 2; Sci- ence Club 2,3; Band 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2; Football 4; Class President 1; Class Play 1; Chorus 1,2; NHS 1 MOSES BONEY, JR.
