Fort Meade High School Fort Meade, Florida THE FOMEHISO 1966 Editor-in-Chief Kathy Rogers Business Manager Ida Mary Burts Adviser Mrs. Carole Anne Pipkins VOLUME 22 TABLE OF CONTENTS - 14-29 - 30-67 - 70-93 96-117 118-149 150-168 Academics - - Classes------- Athletics----- Features------- Activities----- Advertisements The Senior Class voted to dedicate the 1966 FOMEHISO to one of our Senior Class sponsors, Mr. Robert Vincent Cloud. Mr. Cloud was bom in Pensacola, Rorida on December 2, 1936. He attended Pensacola Junior College and Mississippi College where he graduated with a B.A. degree. He has also attended Stetson University on a Ford Founda- tion Scholarship, and Florida Southern. Mr. Cloud, who has taught at FMHS for seven years, teaches American Government, American His- tory, and Communism versus Americanism to most of the Juniors and Seniors. The Senior Class felt the annual should be dedicated to Mr. Cloud because of his help and assistance during the years they had been in Junior and Senior High. Conquering the outer limits Learning how to give a salespitch We are strangers in this world. We are alone, but in our aloneness we contemplate an unknown and en- chanting country, and this meditation fills our dreams with specters of a great distant land which our eyes have never seen... Presentation of awards When we go out to meet the light, the shadows of our bodies follow us, but the shadows of our spirits precede us and lead the way to an unknown place seeking things beyond our understanding, and grasp- ing objects that are meaningless to us... Learning in quietness We walk in the deserted prairies, watching the streamlets running fast, up and up, from the depths of the valley to the top of the mountain: we watch the naked trees blooming and bearing, and shedding their leaves in one instant, and then we see the branches fall and turn into speckled snakes... Enthusiastic crowd trys to cheer our boys on Keeping the body physically fit We are strangers in this world... We are poets who compose what life proses, and who prose what life composes. For these reasons we may all be strangers but we'll never walk alone. .. Participating in class The Class of 1966 salutes the following boys for their scholastic abilities: EDGAR CANTER BROWN VALEDICTORIAN Canter plans to attend the Florida State University after graduation. He was selected Valedictorian because his grades were the highest in our class. Canter also received the Star Pupil Award. This award is based on Senior Tests and SAT scores. Each star pupil picks a teacher whom they think has helped them the most. SALUTATORIAN ROBERT ERVIN MONTGOMERY Robert has gotten many scholarship offers and has not made up his mind which one he will take or which university he will attend. Robert, a transfer student, has maintained his high scholastic average at Union Acad- emy and FMHS. For this reason he has been given the second highest scholastic award, Salutatorian. FOREWORD The FOMEHISO is now complete. This yearbook attempts to bring to you. the students, most of the important events in the school year. A lot of hard work has gone into this memory book for Fort Meade High School. It is not an easy task to get a group of Seniors together and get them to agree on many things. This annual staff is no exception. Fortunately, however, we agreed on all important problems. We hope that you will enjoy the annual and it will help you to recall many pleasant memories. I would like to thank all those who in any way helped to make this annual what is is now. I especially want to recognize our adviser, Mrs. Carole Anne Pipkins, who has really been a big help. My thanks also go to my hard-working staff, the photographers— Mr. Don Robertson, John Varn, and Steve Heller—, also the teach- ers, principals, and everyone who bought an advertisement or an annual. Now we look back at our moments filled with hard work, fun, and sorrow. We started to school in 1954. Our first six years of school flew by, and before we knew it we were 7th graders. As 7th graders, everything was new. We were scared, very bashful, and more than anything, shy. For the first time, we had a real leader, our first President. This honor was given to Lanny Russell. We didn't do much during our 7th grade year, but Lanny showed qualities of being a true leader. Our only highlight was a play given by some of the members of our class. The title of the play was Take a Letter. This play was presented to the student body and enjoyed by everyone. In the 8th grade, we elected Richard Shirley as our new President. This was the only big thing for that year. Then we started the 9th grade. This was the year that the Highways became deathroads. We all took Drivers Education and attempted to learn how to drive. This was a great year for us all. We had waited for 14 years just so we could drive and our time finally came. Jackie Logan was our President that year. When we became 10th graders, we elected Dale Wright as our President. This was a big year for all of us. We had our first money making project. We all sold stationery like mad, and at the end of the sale we had cleared over $100. 00. We were all very proud and happy be- cause we now had some money for our class. Bob Fort led us on in our Junior Year. During this year, we had many big highlights. We started off with the Junior Class Play, directed by Mr. Herbert Roland, in November. All the actors and actresses really did a beautiful job. Head'n for The Hills, proved to be a play well worth seeing. We cleared over $220. 00 on our play. About the biggest thing in our Junior year was when we received our class rings. Our rings were to become the standard rings for Fort Meade High School. The one thing everyone loved was that we had Miner cut into the side of our rings. Next we had our Magazine sale. We were really excited about this project. We scampered from house to house and gave each lady of the house our Sales pitch. We ended up selling close to $1,600. 00 worth of magazines and cleared $600. 00 profit. Most of us won silver dollars and stuffed animals for our efforts at being salesmen. Our biggest and best highlight was the Prom. We worked hard on the prom, staying up late at night to decorate. Our theme was Hawaiian Holiday. Our prom was given in honor of the Senior Class. They all seemed very happy with our choice of theme along with our decorations. At the end of our Junior year, Lanny Russell, our 7th grade President, who we all thought showed qualities of leadership, became the Student Body President. Last, but not least, is this year, our Senior year. Myra Zink is our President this year. We have enjoyed this year more than any other year because now we can look back at all of our memories. This is the most exciting time of our lives. In just a few short weeks, we'11 graduate and be out in the world on our own. Like all other Seniors, we have followed in their footsteps. We have taken our Senior pictures, ordered our invitations, our cards, chosen the color of our Graduation robes, presented the Senior class play Cheaper by the Dozen, directed by Mrs. Carol Snyder, attended the Junior-Senior Prom, prepared for graduation and now our high school days are at an end. She is Mrs. Barbara P. Watts. This is her first year at this fast-paced job and she has done a wonderful job. We have four Senior cheerleaders, and although they will be leaving high school, Mrs. Watts and the rest will remain to support the F.M.H.S. teams. STANDING: Belinda Knight, Sandra Coulter, Melinda Meeks, Carol Cone, and Ther- sa Curry KNEELING: Dawn Durrance, Susan Gunter, Tam Davis, and Karla Atwell. The cheerleaders have new uniforms! They are new gold pleated skirts, new shoes, and they have added knee socks. Our girls have been at every football game, pep rally, basketball game, and have helped at all track meets and baseball games. People may think the cheerlead- er’s only job is to do cheers, but some would be very surprised to find all the responsi- bilities and duties they have. Try following one around on a day of a game and just see how hard they work. They would like to say thanks to you, the students, for the good support you have given them and the team. SENIOR CHEERLEADERS TAM DAVIS - CAPTAIN KARLA ATWELL Four of oui varsity cheerleaders are graduating this year, they are Tam Davis, Karla Atwell, Susan Gunter, and Dawn Durrance. Cheering has meant a lot to each of these girls. Tam has cheered four years, and each of the others have been on the var- sity squad for three years. These girls have worked very hard to keep school spirit in F. M. H. S. These girls deserve much credit for their time and the hard work they have put into representing their school. Intentions of the Senior Class were to make the 1966 FOMEHISO better than the year before and the best of any yearbook ever put out. To achieve this, deadlines had to be met, strategy had to be planned, and feel- ings hurt. There were times when minds were changed, tempers flared, and tears were shed because of frustration, discouragement, and impatience. In the end, the Seniors individually said, Boy, I'm glad this is over, but they spoke with a tone of great satisfaction.
