CLASS HISTORY In September 1951 thirty-three of the greenest little boys and twenty-seven of the cutest little girls this side of Peace River entered their Freshman year in Fort Meade High School. From the very first we took part in the various sports and activities, even though We Were Young and Foolish. Sandra Hancock was our first president and Mrs. Orr and Mr. McCullars sponsored us through that first Green Year. Our big moment finally came when the Juniors asked us to serve at their banquet, Hitch Your Wagon to a Star. Jean Tillis was chosen Football Sweetheart at a big dance. During our Sophomore year we had an unusually successful magazine sale. Brant Gabriel proved himself a master salesman. Tim Shurtleff was our president and our sponsors were Miss Sarah Lett and Mr. McCullars. Joe Davis proved an outstanding athlete by lettering in four sports. We took an active part in both sections of the Youth Fair. Our Junior year brought us many triumphs. Early in the year we got our class rings. We presented our play, Best Foot Forward, which almost made headlines. Audrey Grant acquired the title FFA Sweetheart in a talent contest. Our Junior-Senior Ban- quet was the best yet. Our theme, Stork Club” was carried through beautifully and everyone had a marvelous time. Joe Davis again made headlines in sports. This time he was chosen as a member of the West Coast All Stars. Our money making project, a chicken supper was very successful. David Lewis Marsh served as our president and Miss Godley and Mr. Black, our sponsors. As Seniors we found ourselves in a maze of activities. We got off to a good start by electing David Marsh as our president. Being without funds, we again asked Miss Godley and Mr. Black to be our sponsors and see if they could help us over our finan- cial hump. Tim Shurtleff became our Student Council President. The football dances that we sponsored were all successful (financial and otherwise). Four Senior boys, Joe Davis, Freeman Crews, J. W. Manley, and Johnny Thomas made all conference. Audrey Grant was crowned Homecoming Queen during the festivities at the homecoming game. Leaine Watson was elected Editor-in-Chief of the Black and Gold. With the help of the Juniors we undertook the preparation of the FOMEHISO. Janice Benton was elected Editor-in-Chief and Bob Painter, Business Manager. Freeman Crews was voted the most valuable football player as well as the best sport and received his awards at the Sports Banquet. Phyllis Stephens served as FHA president and J. W. Manley was again elected president of the FFA as well as president of the Polk County Federation. Joe Davis was elected president of National Honor Society. Janice Benton won the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award and Leaine Watson was declared winner of the DAR Award. Our class play, Time Out for Ginger, was really a huge success. The Juniors honored us with a formal prom. And now we are looking forward to June 7 and gradua- tion. Even though our school days here will soon be in the past, We'll Have These Mo- ments to Remember. Judy Allen, Class Historian
