IN MEMORIAM LYALL GRAFF A great grief came on March 6, 1952, to the faculty and students of Fort Meade High School with the passing of our dear classmate, Lyall Graff. We sorrowed deeply even while knowing that the Lord doeth all things well. For today and for the infinite tomorrows, that grief becomes a hallowed memory forever etched upon our hearts. We loved Lyall Graff, we miss him today, and we shall always number him a member of the Class of 1953. Class Mistory CLASS COLORS - - - Green and White CLASS FLOWER-----White Rose On the morning, September 2, 1949, you could almost hear the rolling ripple of Peace River in the wind that was blowing clear and fresh against a lot of slightly shaking Freshmen as we arrived on the campus and knocked the phosphate mud out of our shoes before entering that large and enormous High School for the first time. Little did we know of the fun and happy experiences that same eight o'clock bell would ring down in the history of time for us. Our sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. McCullars, helped us to get adjusted to Changing Classes. We elected A. C. Pierce for our President. Every Freshman glowed with pride when Peggy Dotson was given the honor of being Miss Fort Meade High, and of course, we could never forget the hilarious rat day we had! We dived into our Sophomore year full force! It appeared we had wasted no time in getting acquainted. By now we were spread out in every activity in school: football, band, basketball, cheerleader and others. The teachers always got a strange look on their faces when we were called Sober Sophomores. This was the year we earned our motto - We Have Honesty. With our president, Morris Lunn, the class and our Sponsors, Miss Noland and Doc Harrison, all working together, we made a big profit out of our magazine sales and concession stand. With a big summer of swimming, skiing, or just loafing in the Drug Store behind us, we were all eager to start our Junior Year. This was a year of heavy subjects for all of us but we managed to live up to our title Jolly Juniors. After a good fight, we became Volleyball Champs for the third year straight. Morris Lunn was elected President. Mrs. Dotson and Miss Lett were our sponsors. The biggest thrill of the year was showing our new class rings to all the under classmen. First we sponsored a Leap Year Dance, next we took over the basketball concessions again and then we had a smash hit play. You'll Die Laughing. We gave the Seniors a big banquet at the Yacht Club in Lakeland, using the eye catching theme of Show Boat. Dignified Seniors!!!! This is what we have worked and studied for ail these years! By special request we had Mrs. Dotson and Doc Harrison for sponsors, and they served us well. To make money we sponsored football dances and our very successful Senior Play. Johnny Gordon was our class president, and Morris Lunn presided over the Student Body. Though we started out with an enrollment of sixty-five, we now have forty-five graduates. Some classmates left us, but fortunately some have been replaced. The class of '53 has been spread to all parts of the earth, like a handful of phosphate sand blown away by a playful gust of wind. Some will accomplish success, while still others may be failures, it is up to them. Our most cherished memories will be of those that guided us into maturity, the time spent in class rooms, in the halls and on the campus, but most of all the friends we are leaving behind us in Fort Meade High. Martha Milling Class Historian Cast Will and Zest ament May it be known to all men by these present that we, the Senior Class of 1953, being of sound body, disposing mind, doubtful memory, and of a firm hope of a successful life hereafter, do make and publish this, our last Will and Testament, hereby destroy- ing all former wills made by us at any time thus far. During the course of our various careers we have obtained an abundance of knowledge and experiences, by our own physical and intellectual exertions with this and that we have inherited from preceding classes. We bequeath and dispose of as follows: Section I: To the faculty individually and collectively we leave our sincere thanks and appreciation. Section II: To our Sponsors we leave our most sincere gratitude for their help and understanding. Section III: To the lowly, undignified and irresponsible Junios, we leave our superior knowledge of all things, also the front seats in Chapel and the newly ac- acquired privilege of coming in last. Section IV: To the Sophomore class we will our courage and ingenuity to overcome all obstacles. Section V: To the ignorant and unsuspecting Freshmen we leave a deep sense of pity. CHARLES LEE Class Lawyer June 21, 1963 Dear Diary, Here it is time for our class reunion. While all my former classmates are talking over old times and having fun. I'll still be here in jail. Yes, I’m serving my time for clowing up the schoolhouse on graduation night. I wasn't the only one who had a hand in it, but I was the only one whose hand left any fingerprints. Since I can't go to the reunion, I had EARL COLLINS, who is now a private detective, bring me his file of newspaper clippings about our former classmates. I could at least read about the things they’ve been doing for these past ten years. Here are the facts: MAX LOGAN is campaigning for president. He’s still using his slogan Vote for Logan— the biggest little man in politics. WINIFRED GILLISPIE is president of the world's largest correspondence club. She's giving up eating to devote more time to her writing. SHELTON JACKSON has an observatory on the moon. Wonder what he observes? LA VERNE GUEST won the Featherweight Championship of the world wrestling in Madison Round Gardens. BARNEY BASS is running a funeral home now. He has introduced his new Lay-Away Plan - - you pay him in advance and he'll lay you away, in time. MARY ETHEL MCMILLAN is singing her theme song, A Sloppy Lagoon in a swanky new place built by BILLY JERKINS called Jerkins Juke Joint. MARJORIE HANCOCK and LAREACE POWELL are manufacturing double-jointed specta- cles for two-faced people. SHIRLEY HOWZE and LUCILLE IVEY have quite a fashionable business in New York. In fact, it's the only filling station on Fifth Avenue. MORRIS LUNN and JOHN GORDON have taken over John's father's feed store. At the present they are having a sale on Vitaminized Supersonic pellets for run-down turtles. After receiving his degree from college and getting some practical experience in a circus, BOBBY MITCHELL is well equipped to handle every situation in his position as principal. KENNETH PARRISH is still trying to perfect a tricycle with four-wheel drive. IMOGENE SIMMONS and VIOLET ROGERS have retired in a suite on the top floor of the newly completed Skeleton Hotel, owned by BOBBY DEVANE. They made their millions on Imogene's new breakfast food, Simmons Slurpy Slop, the world's only silent cereal. It doesn't snap, crinkle, gurgle or pop; it merely oozes silently out of the bag. EDNA MAE RIVERS and JOYCE DAVIS have their hands full running a kindergarten for people in their second childhood. FRANK SCHOONOVER and DOROTHY WILLIAMS are married and he is now working on another invention. His latest was a typewriter with fluid drive. ALICE HEDDEN and LILLIAN WINDHAM are really going places as painters. They're painting the yellow stripes down the middle of the highways. BILLY WEST is coaching the Fort Meade Miners now. They've won the Ridge Champ- ionship for three years straight, (just like old times) LUCIAN HENDRICK has a ranch out West. Out West of Bowling Green. JUNE PEACOCK go so tired of going back and forth to Reno, that she finally bought her a house there. A. J. Smith, the famous lawyer, was her thirteenth husband. JULIUS DEAN is in the movies now. His latest film was Tarzan Versus the Tapeworm. ” No, he wasn't Tarzan or even the tapeworm, but a stand-in for one of the monkeys. JUNE KURISH has received world fame because of her latest hit song entitled Sweet- heart, If You Don't Love Me Anymore, Try to Let Me Know By Saturday Night, So I Can Get Another Date. LAVONNE WALDEE has just returned from a fashion show in Bongo Bongo, Africa where she picked up some catchy ideas. She and BYRON MABRY naturally got married and he keeps the house while she works. Speaking of marriages, CHARLES LEE and MILLY NEMEC now have eight children. They lived with Milly's folks for six years, but tired of that. Now they run a fruit stand out on Charleston and are living with Charles’ folks. MARTHA MILLING is really attracting attention as a florist. The other day she cross- ed a dandelion with a snapdragon and now she's spending all her profit building a cage to keep it in. BETTY LOU CANNON has the whole world excited over Cannon's Chocolate Covered Chlorophyll Clumps. PEGGY DOTSON and JOYCE MCQU1EN do a little number in a Miami nightclub that really brings in the customers. (Comedy, no doubt?) MARJORIE PAINTER is lecturing on 3134 Ways to Outwit a Husband. JEAN BARNETT and DOROTHY LUNSFORD keep quite busy helping their children with their homework and knitting. OLIVER REEVES runs a baby-sitting service all over Florida. In order to finance this business, he is writing a book of poetry. J. C. ROWELL is president of the S. P. C. M. U. O. (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Mentally Unbalanced Oysters.) My strength fails; I can write no more.
