MEADE HIGH SCHOOL Volume VII V y We the Class of 1951 of Fort Meade High School wish to take this opportunity to show our appreciation to one of our mothers who has given unselfishly of her time and effort toward making our school life more profitable and more enjoyable. She has served as home-room mother for two years and has always been a capable and willing worker when our class sponsored such activities as class picnics, chicken suppers during our junior and senior years, Junior-Senior Banquet, and senior dances. She not only assisted our class but has been most successful in helping the new school band to secure their uniforms. For these and many other reasons, we wish to dedicate this the seventh edition of the FOMEHISO to our beloved friend Mrs. J. B. Grant. A R. D. MITCHELL Supervising Principal DAVID M. Through the many long years of school, we have struggled in order to become dignified seniors. Let us take off our hats and shed a few tears; we have FINALLY made it! In our first year at school we numbered about fifty students. Mrs. lone Keene and Mrs. Dorothy Gabriel were doomed to the task of reforming us into little ladies and gentlemen. With their aid, we soon budded out and became sweet little things. As the years rolled onward, we were all looking forward eagerly to our first year of high school. At last it came! We were jolly Freshmen or should I say rats. Yes, that was the most outstanding day in our freshman year. Dave Best was our president that year. After a year's experience, we felt at home in high school. We were Sophomores and had to set a good example for our younger schoolmates. During this year, we had our famous Amateur Hour. All the classes in high school were given the chance to contribute their talents; but, of course, the talent from the sophomore class took first prize. During our junior year we were busy trying out different schemes for making money. Our first project was a play, Home Came Hattie. This very comical play brought the entire audience down with laughter. Dan Moody, in his riduculous role of Aunt Hattie's Impersonator received much applause from the audience. Another outstand- ing event of our junior year was our Chicken Supper, which proved a very successful project. We worked hard on these projects because we wanted our banquet to be some- thing we could remember. And indeed we shall remember it! Another paramount occasion of our junior year was the ordering of our class rings (wonder how many are still wearing them)? Senior! That word sounded good to us. Now we were the kings and queens of the campus with special privileges (so we thoughti We elected Carl Storey for presi- dent, which proved a wise choice. A Chicken Supper started us rolling in money. Our football dances were a lot of fun, especially the Home Coming Dance when Ruth Dishong was chosen as sweetheart of our football team. In April of this year, we presented another smash-hit play, which everyone will remember through years to come. Though we started out with a roster of fifty, we now have an enrollment of forty- one. During the years, some of our girls and boys left us to join the married rank, but fortunately they were replaced by newcomers. At last graduation has come with all its regrets and joys. The Senior Class is no more, but the pleasant years we have spent together will remain with us always as our most cherished memories. Mary Alice Howard Class Historian LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1951, in the city of Fort Meade, the county of Polk, and the State of Florida, being of sound body, disposing mind, doubtful memory, and of a firm hope of a successful life hereafter, do make and publish this our last Will and Testament, hereby destroying all former wills made by us at any time thus far. Section I: To the faculty we will our sincere appreciation for their patience and guidance, and we also leave our sympathy for the gray hairs caused by under-classmen. Section II: To our families, who have stood by us through out our school years and who have willingly backed us in all our activities, we will our sincere thanks and appreciation. Section III: To our sponsors we will our gratitude for their undying efforts in making our Senior year a great success. Section IV: To the undignified, inexperienced Juniors, we leave with deepest regrets our most valued properties which are: our undoubted importance, our highly developed sophistication, our intelligence, and ingenuity and above all the front seats in the auditorium. Section V: To the Sophomore Class, we will our soundness of body and durability of mind which they will find useful in over-coming the obstacles that bar the ladder they must climb to success. Section VI: To the Scatterbrained and green Freshmen, we bequeath our sympathy because of our knowledge of the hardships that will so often beset them during their struggle to reach the goal. Section VII: To our beloved F. M. H. S. we leave peanut hulls, candy wrappers, broken desks and typewriters, unpaid book dues, and the calm atmosphere caused by our departure. Section VIII: The individuals of the Senior Class do bequeath fhe following legacies, not as generous gestures left behind because we can no longer use them, but as our most valuable and prized possessions to be accepted and appreciated as legacies which cannot easily be replaced. WITNESSES (SEAL) Class of 1951 June 8, 1951 Patsy Smith Attorney At Law PROPHECY Here it is the spring of 1961 and as I was elected by the class of '51 to remind them of our class reunion I'd better get busy. My line of work, lecturing on How to Reduce by Starvation”, requires quite a bit of traveling, therefore, it will be easy for me to get in touch with my classmates. While on a lecture tour through Georgia I passed several signs bearing the adver- tisement - MARGE'S MUSICAL MORONS. When I stopped to investigate, who should be there but Marge Barnett. Upon finishing high school Marge couldn't decide whether to be a school teacher, musician or psychiatrist, so she combined her talents and opened a music school for feeble-minded children. Say, I just read in the evening paper that Carole Durrance and Hubert Coulter, famous movie stars, have just started their new picture, Oh, You Handsome Brute. Here's another article about the world's new Woman Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. That name certainly does sound familar. Sure it does. That’s my old classmate, Betty Rice. All of you have seen the new bathing suits that are being advertised as Woods' Skimpies. ” Well, you won't be surprised to learn that Othin Woods is the designer of these sensational new suits and Valeria Coulter is his star model. Looking through the book review section, I see that Mary Alice Howard has com- pleted her new book, Living Alone and Liking It , one of the best sellers at this time. Saving the sports page until last, I find that my classmates have made the head- lines. Patsy Smith is now playing professional basketball and is famous as a guard and a forward. Also, Joe Lunsford has at last realized his life-long ambition to take Johnny Lujack's place on the Chicago Bears team. Houston McPherson is now Mr. Shortstop in the baseball world, playing with the New York Yankees. Naturally as I am a lecturer myself, I am interested in all lecturers aiding humanity. The other night upon dropping in at the local Lecture Hall who should I find but Helen Morgan, just back from Reno after getting her fourth divorce, giving lectures on How To Keep Your Man. I went to the Metropolitan Opera the other night to hear Madame Butterfly, and guess who was singing the lead - Zoah Swartzel, After graduation, she started study- ing opera. 1 suppose all of you have heard Russell Brinson's radio program, Have You Had Your Hadacol”, starring Ralph Corbitt and Uhlan Fralic as the Dopey Dudes Duet. And have you heard the National Debating Team and their captain Jean Turner? Say, isn't that something! Having learned this much 1 decided to go back to Fort Meade and look up the rest of the class. Going down to see the Atlantic Coast Line President about reserving a private car, I found Allen Burnsed occupying the position. Recovering from this shock, I started home. When I stopped at Silver Springs, who should greet me but Alvie Windham, He is now snake trainer in Ross Allen’s place. Well, you know Alvie was always a little off. Arriving in Fort Meade, I stopped in what used to be Varn's Pharmacy, but is now the Slurp Slurp Soda Shop under the proprietorship of Franklin Burnsed. Franklin told me that William Owens is the owner of the New Public Super Market which is Fort Meade's leading enterprise. He also told me that Jimmy Wetherington is Mayor of Fort Meade and Royce Twiss is the City Manager. While I was sitting there, Wesley Fordham and Frank Toney came in. Wesley is manager of the Fox Theater and Frank owns a ranch east of town. Frank asked me to ride out and see his prize Herefords. On the way out, we stopped at Betty Jane and A. C. Pierce's house. While we were there, the Fuller Brush Man came. He looked strangely familiar and when I saw tnat Mohawk haircut I was quite sure it was none other than Carl Storey. Our next stop was the Standard Station at Leesville. Of course, I should have known that it was owned by Dan Moody. He and Ruby Gillispie are married and have three little flannels. We left the station and went to the Bowlegs Creek Fishing Camp, owned and operated by Dave Best. Dave told me that our new Florida Governor, Nelson Lunn, is a regular customer of his. He told me that Fort Meade's best tourist drawing feature is a Dog Racing Track owned and operated by Roy DeVane and Clois Cannon. After such a full day I decided to spend the night at Dave's camp and go up to the school house with him the next day. As I entered the old portals it brought back a rush of fond memories which can't be related here. Needing a visitor's permit, I stopped in at the office and found that Lavata Hunter was the school secretary. She told me to see the principal about my permit. Seated in the principal's office looking very dignified was Neigel Milling who offered to take me over the school himself. As we were walking down the hall, Neigel told me that Billy Aycock is cartoonist on the Fort Meade Leader and that Ed Williams is now coach at Fort Meade. First we stopped in Miss Reid's old English room and there stood Audrey Moody teaching English Literature. Recovering from that blow, we went to the commercial room and found Ed Walker right in the middle of explaining the bookkeeping cycle. I couldn't have taken much more cf that. I was relieved to find that Louise Bass is now school librarian and that Doris Upthegrove is Girls' Physical Education Instructor. Yes, some of us have done great things and some of us only ordinary ones, but you must admit, we are still a most unpredictable class.
