CLASS HISTOBI We are the Seniore of Fort Meade High School, the class of 1950. For many years we have struggled to win this title, “Seniorsâ€; and, although some of us didn't quite make it all the way, let us give a cheer for those who have. One bright September morning in 193®. aa a group of shy little tots (what a change has taken place!), we started our first day at school. Soon our bashfulness was gone and we began to look around and find out our classmates' names. We wonder now how our teachers ever put up with us, trying to teach us now to write our names and learn our alphabet. For eight long years we struggled through our lower grades, thinking each year we were a little better than the year before. We soon learned who was better when the teachers called us down to our places. For it was they who tried to make lit- tle “angels out of little “brats . In September of 1946 we were given the name of FresnmBn, a very suitable title, no doubt. After having elected David Creech as our president, we started our first year in High School off with a bang! Bat Day was the big hit of the year for us, in more ways than one. After another year had gone by we were beginning to feel very proud of our new name, “Sophomores . Richard Allen was elected as our president and we had many activities to attend to. We started by sponsoring the Sunny South Quartet , which was one of our big projects for the year. It might be stated, too, that we made Bat Day a pleasant surprise for the Freshmen. The year 19 +8 found us a happy group of Juniors . Again we selected Richard Allen as our president, and again we were very busy. We began by ordering our class rings. How pretty we thought they were! Kext on our list was the Junior Play, Mama's Baby Boy . A good one it was, too, with Ira Sturgis playing the title role. One of the most exciting events of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. We were very proud of the fact that our banquet was the first to be held in the new gymnasium. The time came before we could realize it when we were dignified Seniors , (And were we dignified!) Our thoughts were turned to the more serious side of life, and under the capable leadership of our president. Bichard Allen, we started our last year of school. We ordered our caps, gowns, and invitations. For our Senior Play we presented My Heart's in High . Before we knew it our Senior year of school was nearly gone. We were feeling Commencement in the air. Soon the day of which we had dreamed and toward which we had worked for twelve long years would really be here. But tnen it was with sad- dened hearts that we realized we would regret leaving our dear old Alma Mater and being separated from our ever-admonishing teachers and our classmates so dear. And so we resolved that we would always treasure the memories of our school days and, in recalling our varied experiences, use them as a foundation upon whicn to build a gloriou8 future. Janiece Barnett Class Historian CLASS PROPHECY Being proof reader for the nation's leading newspaper, The Fort Meade Weakly , I have no trouble at all keeping up with ray old classmates, who are all famous names in the occupations which they have chosen. No doubt you will be interested to know what each one is doing just ten years after that all important graduation day. Working right on our own staff is Billy Sloan, who draws the comic strip, Sloan's Sillyism8 which was just voted first place in the cartoon world. Also, drawing our advertisements of women's clothing is Dot McDaniel. They say she makes a thousand bucks a week. Not bad, huh? I just received a copy of our today's paper. Turning to the news page, I'm not surprised to see another member of our class has make headlines. Chief engineer Johnny Hendricks has Just been decorated by five countries for the building of a new underground tunnel across the Atlantic Ocean. I see where Ira Sturgis has invented a new silent alarm clock. He has been granted patent number 76895 23. Glancing down the page I see the weather report. Observer Earl Lunn says we are still to have sunny days. Now, what do you know about this? Seems as if Earl Thomas is a big time broker on Wall Street. Wonder if he still has his loaded dice? Bettye Rowell is chief scientist at Oak Ridge. She takes hydrogen out of the H. Bomb. Dot Gramling has Just won the Mrs. America title. She is the only person ever to win the Miss America and Mrs. America title. But, we knew she could do it. The radio program is full of familiar names. Over station EARL you can hear Betty Young in Youngens Yarns . By the way, tne broadcasting system is owned by her husband Earl Sellars. At 12:30 you can hear Tina's Tips To The Teens , starring Tina Crawford. At 9:30 P.M. Betsy Stokes brings you a mystery thriller. Tonight the story is Goldie Locks and the Peroxide Bottle . Turning to the sports page we find many of our boys in tne top news items. Seems like the nation's No.l jockey Oren Brooks nas just won tne Kentucky Derby. He rode the horse Beetle Bomb which is owned by Thomas Prine. Txnmas now owns eignt race horses which net him about $2,000 per week. Here's where Edward Bevis won the world heavyweight title last night. Ed is the most fierce and hard pounding fighter of the boxing world today. Jack Coulter has Just returned from the i960 World Olympics where he broke his own high Jump record. It is now seven feet and three inches. The St. Louis Cardinals have Just bought Oliver Slay from the Brooklyn Dodgers for $2,000,000. Olie is the only big league pitcher ever to pitch ten straight no-hit game8. Dean's Dare Devils, owned by Clayton Dean, are racing tonight at Wauchula. Not only are our boys on the sports page, but also one of our girls. Joyce Dotson has Just swum the English Channel. Breaking the all time record, she swam it in ten hours. Now we find the society and fashion page. Models Christine Aycock and Fidelia Varn have Just returned from Paris. Employed by John Powers, they have been in the fashion limelight three years now. James Green is a famous orchestra leader and composer of distinction, his lat- est hit being, Theodore the Tuba Tooter . Junior Belcher is a great stage producer. He has employed the most shapely bathing beauties in the U.S. Richard Allen, the famous inventor, has been reported engaged for his third time. Now the lucky girl is Mary Moneybags. By the way, his newest invention is Re8twell mattresses for oyster beds. Looking now at our advertisements we see several items of interest. Lunsford's Luscious Lobsters. It's none other tnan LeRoy Lunsford, owner and manager of a huge cnain of restaurants known all over the world as the Eat and Run Restaurants . Catching my eye is a colorful Yellowstone Park advertisement. Juanita Lamb is now a guide there. She conducts the Non-stop, Don't Look, and Listen Tours. That's all the names in our paper today, but I'll tell you about tnose I've read of in previous editions. Maida Griffis and Melba Gramling sure running a transit bus between Fort Meade and Bartow. Every hour on the hour. Lewis McMillan is a famous dentist, noted for his non-skid false teeth, Yvonne Streetman B.A., B.S., M.A., and Ph.D., is now art Instructor at Frost- proof Higv. School. Helen Ruth Durrance has superseded Mary Hayworth and Is now handing out ad- vice to the lovelorn through her column In the New York Tribune. Louise Lloyd and Louise Crosby have bought Johns Hopkins Hospital wnich is now jcnown as Louises Mortuary. Elizabeth Guest is living in Eloise where she and her husband, Preston, run the Ayers Grocery. Homer Aakins is also a noted inventor, whose specialty is time saving devices, his latest one being exercises for reducing one's income taxes. Juanita Jones has at last fulfilled her life ambition. She is librarian at dear old F.M.H.S. Mary Register, Vivian Rivers, and Betty Dunn are all members of a vaudeville team giving nightly performances at the famous Diamond Horseshoe now owned by Gordon Mott. Betty Joan Martin has a clinic in Africa where she and her husband Dr. Kuteraup Sawbones are missionaries. Little Miss Linda Robinson has recently bean crowned Qjieen of the Rodeo in Del Rio, Texas. It seems that the charm and beauty of this young miss have won the admiration of all, including the fond parents, Betty Jo and Johnny Robinson, whoso home, Tub Rancho Grande is one of the beauty spots near San Antonio. Betty Moody is head nurse at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando. She is married to Dr. U. N. Healthy, a noted surgeon. Janiece Barnett is now teacher of dramatics in the school of Dramatic Arts, in Hollywood, Florida. She majors in the works of William Shakespeare. Rheta Roddenberry now owns and operates the largest theater in Bowling Green, The Ritze Rheta . Yes, all the members of our class have gone far and made great names for them- selves. But is this so surprising? We've always been outstanding, haven't we? Margaret Collins Class Prophet THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1950, in the town of Fort Meade, the County of Polk, and the State of Florida, being in a good mental condition a3 usual, and real- izing that our high school days are about over, ana that we are soon to pass through the portals of graduation into the land of alunmi, do hereby make this, our last will and testament, rendering void and of no avail any former will or wills that may have been previously made by us during a period of temporary optimism.
